The purpose of this paper is to review existing literature related to the use of social media in computing
education at higher education level, the effects of social media on learning , and the concerns of
adopting social media in learning. These technologies may create a higher level of student engagement
that will build and support a community of scholars. The majority of studies are experimental studies
investigating specific sicao networking tools in specific settings, and several studies focusing on
pedagogy, learning outcomes or teaching styles are emerging. Some studies point out that it is
obligation to prepare students for what they will encounter once they graduate from college and enter
the workplace. Other studies examine the connection between social neteworking and informal and
formal learning. Even though computing faculty members may have more experience with the
technology, their adoption of soial media teaching purpose has been at a lower rate comparing to
faculty in other fields such as humanities and arts, professions and applied sciences, amd social sciences,
with its many benefits such as social networking and user generatred content, has drawn attention for
teaching and learning. This literature shows many studies have investigated student behaviors on these
sites, which indicates the significance of the current review in providing an in-depth understanding of
student behavior.

Over 70% of students currently use social networking sites of some kind, due to the increase in
popularity of social media networking sites and applications is widespread. They invest a significant
amont of their everyday time on these websites. Social networking site usage has surges as a result of
the rapid development of technology.
Social media platforms have a significant impact on education. In fact, by interacting with group learning
and other educational systems, students have several opportunities to enhance their academic
performance and have access to the most recent nformation. Students can exchange knowledge and
seek for help from other students through social networking. Increasing relationships between students,
which encourages information sharing, is one of social networking’s major benefits as a learning tools.
Lim and Richardson (2016), emphasized that one important advantages of social networking as an
educational tool is to increase connections between stuents ans teachers. Although, 90% of stdents use
social media, many educators are concerned about the possible limitations of using online and
interactive technology in higher education. In a survey, 56% of educators said they thought students
were more distracted by online and mobile technologies than they were encouraged with their
academic work. The negative effects of social media outweigh the positive ones (wood and scott, 2016).
Due to the fact that students frequently use social media for purposes other than learning, this tends to
distract them from the learning environment, and affect their academic performance ( Bekalu et al,
2019: Hettiarachchi, 2014).

The methods are the collected and reviewed the literature in the use of social media in higher education
for subjects. The following databased were utilized for the literature search: EBSCO ,IEE and ACM digital
library the search sought full text articles presenting empirical studies involving the use of social media
in higher education settings particularly those used for computing related subject the findings in t he
literature are organized based on their key perspective of the study: students perceived learning
experience the students reported to have overall enjoyed the experience when being asked to compare
the experience when being asked to compose the experiences on using social networking sites (SNSs)
for class purpose to their previous experience using traditional learning management system (CMS)
most student preferred UNU student learning achievement when the past conceptual knowledge tests
were compared the test scores receive improves.

The study was conducted among 300 women, who were students at Prince Sattam bin Abdul Aziz
University in wadi adawasir. A questionnaire was seed to collect data across 4 months (I,e, September
to December 2019) this participants cervent before responding to the survey. This study was
conducted to the full time student who were willing to participate and answer the questions
honestly the objective research distributed the questionnaire to the students and requested
them to read the questions carefully and answer all the question accuratey and honestly. The
collected data were kept confidentially, the questionnaire answered the following variable:
age, time spent on the internet to social media (hour) most frequently use social media
platforms were used (academic purposes, chatting, gaming o movie reviewing) time of which
college starts effect of social media pre occupation and distraction from academic or learning
activities the results among 300 a total of 290 studentsreported they used social media
application. 1% of the students used social media for academic purposes. Whereas 35% of them
browsed these sites to pass time. In conclusion a majority of the participants reported
prolonged use of Social networking sites for non-academic purposes. This kind of behavior can
be a distraction in students academic work. It sill affect their academic performance, social
interactions, and sleep durations and lead to a sedentary lifestyle and physical inactivity.which
in turn can render them vulnerable to non-communicable diseases and mental health
problems.
