THE EFFECTS OF SOCIAL MEDIA USAGE TO THE ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE

OF SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS IN JUGABAN NATIONAL HIGH SCHOOL

CHAPTER I

INTRODUCTION

Background of the study

The Jugaban National High School is having a more enrollees every year. When the

school year comes: the students of JNHS are addicted on the social media like Playing Computer

Games, Facebook, Twitter, You Tube, Instagram, Tumbler, Tiktok, watching online even in the

class. Students must really know the importance of social media to be able to fulfil their own

will. Technology nowadays is becoming more and more high tech. And its improved day by day

to use in our convenience.

According to Brown et al (2010) the driving factors for adaptation of social media are

the progressively ubiquitous access, convenience, functionality, and flexibility of social

technologies. These factors have made the adaptation of social media very easy and have

tremendously improved mankind’s life by exposing him to different ways of creating and sharing

information. An additional benefit of social technologies provided on the internet is that they rare

frequently free or require marginal investment, thereby eliminating potential barrier adaptation

(Brown, 2020)

As we know, nothing interesting is every completely one-sided, so it is for social

media as it comes with both positive and negative effects. There is a correlation between social

media usage and academic performance of Senior High School Students in JNHS. According to

Wheeler et al (2008) there have been various views and opinions which recognize four major

advantages of social media use in higher education. These include; enhancing relationship,

improving learning motivation, offering personalized course material, and developing

collaborative abilities. Also, Ricardo et al (2007), argued that students are socially connected

with one another and therefore share their daily learning experiences and do conversation on

various topics through social media. Lastly, Kuppuswamy and Shankar (2010), reviewed that

social network websites grab students’ attention and then diverts it towards no educational and

inappropriate actions including useless chatting.

According to Wilsey and Sisson (2006), they argue the previous studies and found that

more than 90% percent of tertiary school students use social networks. It also found that,

students use social networking sites approximately thirty (30) minutes throughout the day as part

of their daily routine life (Nicole, Charles, and Cliff, 2007).

Statement of the Problem

This study aims to identify the effects of social media to the academic performance of the

students. This study will also seek to answer the following questions:

1. What are the demographic profile of the respondents?

a. Track or Strand

2. What are the factors might affect the Senior High Students brought by Social Media?

2.1. What is the greatest factor?

2.2. Least factor?

3. What is the significance relationship of social media usage to the academic performance

of Senior High students?

Hypothesis

The researcher hypothesis is that there is no significance between the effects of social

media on academic performance of the students.

Significance of the study

This study is significance to the teachers, parents and students. This study will help the

teachers of the school to know influence that social media has on their students, so as to assist

them to enlighten and create awareness to the students on the possible influence it has on them.

The study is of significant to parents in the sense that they will know the possible effects these

media usage has on their children, so as to serve as watch-dog to their children on the usage of

social networking sites.

The study will enable the students of the senior high level so they will be aware that,

apart from social benefits of this social networking sites, using the sites more than necessary will

possible dangers to their health. The study will help the further researchers with more

information on the effects of social media to the student’s academic progression.

Scope and Delimitation

The focus of this research work is to study the effects of social media on the academic

performance of senior high students. The study will comprise the students in Jugaban National

High School.

shows how study will run through the process. The researchers wanted to know the Grade 12
Senior High School student’s usage of social media and the effects of social media usage affects
their academic performance. The demographic profile of the respondents will be the independent
variable and academic performance as the dependent variable.
Theoretical Framework

This study anchored on theories propounded by Albert Bandura, B. F. Skinner and

Abraham Maslow. Bandura’s Learning Theory, as social media made inroads into our living

rooms, much of social learning has been influenced by it, especially among the impressible

minds of children and adolescents. According to Albert Baundura et al (1943) adolescents have

the most impressible minds, which explains their ability to learn and comprehend and quickly

pick up behaviors from their surrounding environment.

Definition of Terms

Ubiquitous- a term researchers use to describe the social media means existing or being

everywhere at the same time

Social Media- forms of electronic communication (such as websites or social networking and

microblogging) through which users create online communities to share information,

ideas, personal messages and other content (such as videos)

Tremendously- To great or tremendous extent

CHAPTER II

REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE

The research is focus on analyzing the effects of social media on students’ performance.

According to the comprehensive literature review by Elison (2007), the role of social media in

higher education is attribute to the creation of virtue classes. The review has analyzed massive

research database around the world to make this review comprehensive in its coverage for almost

all aspects of endeavor to give an explanation for the diverse roles of Social media in higher

education.

According to Rejie D. Astodello (2016), people all over the world have been enjoying the

benefits of using technology nowadays. In the past, communicating and free sharing of thought

between people are restricted by long, distance, race, and even religion. But now these barriers

can no longer stop the flow of information and knowledge because now the new world of social

networking allows free sharing of thoughts through online social networking sites such as

Facebook, Twitter, and the like.

We can’t deny the fact as years pass by the demand for internet usage keeps increasing

because it is already necessity among end users, particularly to students. According to the survey

by Pew Research (2015) the largest social networking company, Faceebook, for example, has

1.49 billion active users and the number of users increasing every year. Social media in general

as some kind of components in students’ environment that can stimulate them to study better

(Gagne, 2003). Students prefer social media sites as reliable sources of information because

everything is package
The review found mix of opinion regarding whether social networking platforms and

technology should be integrated process or not. Tess (2013), literature surveys finds many

reasons for this mix of opinion. His review argues that researchers who support the integration of

social media into educational setup are the view that conversational process ensuring maximum

interaction and maximum mix of reflection are possible only through social networking

platforms.
CHAPTER III

METHODOLOGY

Research methodology was a way to find out the result of given problem on a specific

matter or problem that was also referred as research problem. In methodology, researcher uses

different criteria for solving or searching the given research problem. The basics idea of

researcher was to get actual facts related to a particular problem and helps us to make a

systematic enquiry and measurement.

Research Design

This paper used correlational research design to correlate the effects of social media

usage to the academic performance of senior high school students. Correlational research design

is a type of research design where in it established relationship between two variables without

looking into the cause. According to Creswell (1997), correlational research designs are used by

investigator to describe and measure the degree of relationship between two or more variables or

sets of score. Therefore, this paper examines the relationship of social media usage and academic

performance of the students.

Research Population and Sample

The researcher sample must be students from Jugaban National High School taking any

strand of senior high. Out of 670 Senior high students, researchers will pick 365 students as

sample to determine the effects of social media usage to the academic performance of senior

high students.
Sampling Procedure

The researchers used stratified sampling technique to determine sample from each grade

level of senior high students of Jugaban National High School. Stratified random sampling is a

method of sampling that involves the division of population into smaller groups known as strata.

In stratified random sampling, the strata are formed based in members’ shared attributes or

characteristics. These subsets of strata are then pooled to form a random sampling. Sample is a

portion of a population selected for the study and sample size is the method of selecting the

samples from the population (Ogedegbe, 1998). Every study involves sampling selection from

the whole population, a smaller group to be investigated.

Research Instruments

This study used survey questionnaire through the use of Google form as an instrument in

gathering data. Questionnaire is described as a “document that contains a set of questions, the

answer to what are to be provided personally by the respondents”. According to Bogardus

(1999), “a questionnaire sent to a number of people for them to answer. It served standardized

results that can be tabulated and treated statistically”. The researcher chose this survey because it

was the only available survey that is addressing to the population, moreover, it was also made to

test the relationship between the social media usage and the student’s academic performance.

The questionnaire is divided into two sections (A and B). Section A consists of 7 questions and

elicits demographic information. Section B consists of 9 likert-scale questions that elicited

information about the students use of social media: Strongly Agree(SA), Agree (A), Neutral(N),

Disagree (D) and strongly Disagree (SD).

Validity and Reliability of the instrument

The instrument was presented to two experts in Jugaban national High School for virtual

validation. Both experts are in the Grade 12 Department. The experts were requested to

crosscheck the suitability and clarity of the items; remove ambiguous or redundant statements

and make necessary suggestions that may improve the instruments. All their observations were

taken care of by the researcher. In the other hand, the reliability of the instrument was

determined. Pearson Correlation Coefficient was used to determine the reliability of the

instrument. According to (Taber, 2017) the range of a reasonable reliability is between 0.67 and

0.87. Therefore, the instrument is reliable to the study.

Data Collection Procedure

For the quantitative data collection, the researcher has created the questionnaire in

Google Forms and used it collect data. The questionnaire was sent through messenger, and other

forms of social media. The researcher solicited the data.

Data Analysis

The collected data were scored, coded and inserted. The researcher analyzed the data

using statistical test based on research question.

CHAPTER IV

RESULTS AND DISCUSSION

This chapter deals with the analysis and interpretation of data and information

collected by the researcher from the sample of population at Jugaban National High School.

Survey questionnaire through Google form is the main tool of the researcher to gathered and

collect data from the selected respondents in JNHS.

The data collection was carried out in the month of February, 2021 among 365 students

of Jugaban National High School. The researcher use survey questionnaire to have a deeper

understanding about the use and knowledge about social media in particular on their academic

performance.
