Chapter 1

The Problem and Its Setting

Introduction

The generation of youths today grow up holding with technology in the palm

of their hands. Technology grows with them as well and as it developed; new platforms are

created. When these platforms and applications come up, people get so engaged in it, and it

still has people attached to it until now, this is Social Media, the social media sites or

applications. From Facebook, Messenger, Twitter, to Instagram and Youtube, and many

more social media sites that youths can't get enough of. Human beings among all living

creatures posses some high qualities such as learning, expressing their opinions, having fun

and entertaining. Social media is a tool used to interact with friends and family. It can take

form of variety of tech enabled activities such as photo sharing, blogging, online gaming,

video sharing, business networks, reviews and many more.

For individuals from all over the globe who share a common interest, share

content etc. Social media is very helpful for expanding our sources of content as a whole,

social media is also used to keep in touch with friends and extended family, network for

career opportunities, find people. It can take form of variety of tech enabled activities such

as photo sharing, blogging, online gaming, video sharing, business networks, reviews and

many more.

Moreover, social media has been a daily thing for the youths to use, so it affects a lot

of things in their life, such as their studies. Like most things, Social Media and its sites have
1
effects and impact, through this research it will be found out social media's effects when it

comes to the youths or our students.. This research is conducted to find out the Impact of

Social Media among the Senior High School students of Bethany Christian School.

Statement of the Problem

This research aims to find out the Impact of Social Media among senior high school

students of Bethany Christian School,

Specifically, it attempts to answer the following:

1. How are the respondents described in terms of.

1.1. Gender

1.2 Grade level

2. What social media are frequently used by the respondents?

3. How long do the respondents use social media in doing given activities?

4. What is the Impact of Social Media among Senior High School students of Bethany

Christian School?

3. Does the impact of Social Media in the Activities of the students differ in terms gender?

4. Is the frequency on the use of social media dependent on the social media activities of

the respondents ?

2
Hypothesis

There is no significant difference in the impact of social media in terms of gender.

There is no significant relationship of the activities in social media to the frequency

of social media use.

Significance of the Study

The purpose of this study is to find out how far social media would influence the

senior high school students of Bethany Christian School.

It is expected that the following benefit from the study:

School administration - the result of the study may guide them in making preparing topics

for orientations, programs or seminars, and rules regarding the impact of social media in

the studies of the students .

Parents - this will help them understand the role of social media in the life of their children.

They may set rules in the use of gadget for their children most especially during classes.

Teachers: They will know the effect of Social Media to their students' skills and academics,

hence, help them understand their students about what social media can do.

Students - the result will help them to be aware of the impact of Social Media and how it

affects their studies. If it has a good or bad impact. They will know how to limit their time in

engaging themselves in Social Media

3
Other researchers- it can be a reference and they could get ideas from this, it can guide

them on other studies that are similar to this problem.

The researchers- they will be able to make another study out of the findings

Scope and Delimitation

This study is all about The Impact of Social Media among Senior High School

Students of Bethany Christian School. It aims to find out the Impact of Social Media among

the students of BCS the difference in terms of gender and age.

This study was conducted at Bethany Christian School Senior High School

building Caburnay, Paniqui, Tarlac. It was conducted from February 1-20 2019.

The respondents of this study are the Senior High School BCS students.

Purposive sampling was used to attain a high percent of reliability in the gathered data.

A questionnaire was prepared by the researchers which has four questions.

The first one being the profile of the respondents, their gender and grade level. The

following three questions are about what social media they use, how much time they spend

doing the given activities in social media, and lastly the impact of Social Media to the

respondents.

Review of Related Literature and Studies

This chapter contains the related literature and studies coming from different

sources like websites, other studies and articles. This may help the researchers enhance

the knowledge about this study "The Impact of Social Media among SHS Students of

Bethany Christian School.

Foreign Literature

Olayiwola Olaitan ( 2017 ) says that, addiction to the usage of social media

has extremely increased in recent times. The perils of its effects on the academic

performance of the over-involved students are disturbing. Academic performance which is

depicted by the grades of students is a great concern student that spends excessive time on

social networks become dependent on it and it is believed that their academic performance

diminishes proportionate. It is perceived that school grades will suffer when spending too

much time on social sites such as Facebook, twitter and 2go as valuable study time is lost.

Yasmin Hashem ( 2015 ) once said that, , it is crucial to determine the impact of social

media on the academic performance of students. Technology is booming rapidly from year

to year, and the younger generations are the ones caught in this rapid change.

Questionnaires were distributed through Facebook and E-mails, to find out whether

students academic performance is impacted by social media or not. The findings

demonstrate that there is no relationship between social media and academic

performance; this is clearly projected in their overall grade average.

5
Steve Armstrong ( 2013 ) students are attempting to multi-task. They are

trying to check various social media sites while they study. This leads to reduced academic

performance. Besides, their ability to concentrate on their task at hand gets significantly

reduced due to the distraction that is brought by all these social media sites. The other

negative effect on students is that they are spending too much time on social sites, and

much lesser time on socializing in person. Guest Blogger ( 2012 ) the negative effects of

these social networking sites overweigh the positive ones. These sites have caused some

potential harm to society. The students become victims of social networks more often than

anyone else. This is because of the reason that when they are studying or searching their

course material online, they get attracted to these sites to kill the boredom in their study

time, diverting their attention from their work. Sandra Okyeadie Mensah ( 2016 )The use of

social media among students has reached high levels and has affected their study time,

poor grammar and wrong spellings when socializing on social media as well as diverting

their attention from their studies.

Local Literature

According to Sun Star Pampanga (2017) The progress of technology is a

blessing to human wherein it makes life faster and easier primarily the invention of

computers. Computer technology has various uses like in transportation, communication,

commerce, construction, medicine, studies in universe even the content of books are

already in the internet. We also have social networking, social media and computer games

6
which serve as leisure and entertainment to humans. But whatever excessive use of a thing

may result into a bad effect to people.

To that, Inquirer (2018) agrees, according to them although some studies

report that social media has a negative impact on school performance, others show a

positive influence, while some have failed to find any relationship at all.

In the new review the team found that as they had expected, students who

used social media intensively to communicate to their peers about school-related topics

actually tended to have slightly higher, not lower grades. In addition, they found that those

who were particularly active on social media did not spend less time studying. However,

those who used social networking sites very frequently, regularly post messages and

photos, did have slightly lower grades, although the team stressed that the negative effect,

is very small. Those who used social media while studying or doing homework also had

slightly worse grades than students who didn't use the sites, possibly because this form of

multi-tasking distracted students from their work.

In addition, Astodello (2016) said that since students are highly motivated to

using social media sites the majority of them use these to satisfy their social needs more

than their academic needs. They have the freedom to do whatever they want – they can

upload or download data, they can make new friends and comment on other people’s lives,

and they can even create other online identities the real world does not allow. It has been

observed too that the majority of the students nowadays, particularly those in the

secondary level, spend most of their time chatting with their acquaintances, playing online

games, and watching videos instead of reading their lessons, making their assignments, and

7
other academic requirements. The main reason is when they work or search their materials

online they get attracted to social networking sites to kill boredom during study time,

diverting their attention from their work. The darker side of this that has gained the

attention of many parents is that some students are getting lazier and are no longer

interested in going to school. This is probably due to being extensively indulged to get

global access and therefore leading them to perform less academically.

On the other hand, Wang, Chen & Liang (2011) stated that many researchers

have been looking into a considerable amount of research on how social media influences

student academic performances at colleges. Many parents are worried that their children

are spending too much time on Facebook and other social media sites and not enough time

studying.

Meanwhile, Philnews (2018) said possible mental illnesses caused by too

much social media is Triggers Sadness Lessens Well-Being. Another study shows that social

media was linked to social isolation through spending more time on websites such as

Facebook, Twitter, Google+, YouTube, LinkedIn, Instagram, Pinterest, Tumblr, Vine,

Snapchat and Reddit rather than enhancing well-being. You start comparing your lives with

others'. Any kind of comparison in the social media in linked to depressive symptoms such

as having a feeling of another person has it better than you. It leads To Jealousy & Vicious

Cycle. The social media comparison usually leads to jealousy after seeing other people’s

lives and looking at it better than yours. It was also linked to feeling envy and depressed.

8
Foreign Studies

Agwi Uche Celestine1 and Ogwueleka Francisca Nonyelum ( 2018 ) says that

the proliferation of mobile phones and advancement of media technology has had a great

influence on the way people now communicate on a daily basis. The use of the social media

among the youths of today is growing exponentially and gaining more and more popularity

among students. Many students get addicted to the use of social media site as they continue

to engage in one activity or another on the social media sites very often. Due to this

increased popularity, there are growing concern over the possible influences the use of

social media could have on students’ academic performances. M Rithika, Sara Selvaraj

( 2013 ) As we are living in a networking era, the tremendous growth of the internet has a

high impact on the development of the students in which they interact and socialize. During

this era, communication is the most popular term. Today, communication revolution

brought us together regardless of geographical boundaries. Jeanna Mastrodicasa, Paul

Metellus ( 2013 ) There are numerous ways, positive and negative, in which social media

impact college students. Understanding sheer volume of time and the type of activities for

which college students use social networking sites is crucial for higher education

administrators. researchers have begun to empirically examine impacts on students’ well-

being and have found some preliminary results that call for more research. They find that

social media are not the problem-the problem is the specific use and purpose of social

media activities that make the difference. Abraham E Flanigan, Wayne A Babchuk ( 2015 )

using social media during academic activities diminishes achievement, increases the

amount of time it takes to complete tasks, and reduces how much information students

retain from study and lecture sessions.

9
Local studies

Duvince Zhalimar Dumpit/Cheryl Joy Fernandez(2017)The purpose of their

study is to extend the understanding of the drivers of social media in higher education

institutions (HEIs) in an emerging economy. This research adopts the Technology

Acceptance Model but included subjective norm, perceived playfulness, Internet reliability

and speed as additional constructs. With these inclusions, the model is appropriate and

relevant in explaining users’ adoption and usage behavior of social media. Data from 500

students from public and private HEIs in the Philippines were collected and analyzed. We

used a combination of statistical analyses such as the Principal Component Analysis (PCA)

and Structural Equation Modeling (SEM) in analysing the complex relationships between

determinants of these technologies. The research demonstrated that perceived usefulness,

perceived ease of use, subjective norm, and perceived playfulness (happiness) are robust

predictors of usage behavior of students. However, Internet reliability and speed were only

significant in (some) public HEIs. This evidence may be explained by the fact that

information and communications technology (ICT) infrastructure in public HEIs is not a

priority or under invested in developing countries. On the other hand, the analysis between

public and private HEIs undertaken here extends our understanding towards the different

behaviors of users. The findings, though preliminary, suggest that private HEIs should

initiate or continue the use of social media in classrooms, because intention to use translate

to actual use of these tools. Public institutions, however, should improve Internet reliability

10
and speed and should reassess their use of social media in order to fully take advantage of

the benefits of ICT.

McLoughlin & Lee (2010) stated that using social media networks in the

educational process could help educators to apply the inquiry-based approach and

encourage the collaboration between the instructor and the students, thereby encourage

engagement. Also important is the potential of these technologies for encouraging

independent self-directed learning as well as encouraging students’ as active producers of

knowledge.

Fadul, Jose A.(2014)This exploratory study investigates the use of a

computational knowledge engine (WolframAl-pha) and social networking sites (Gmail,

Yahoo and Facebook) by 200 students at De La Salle-College of Saint Benilde, their

"friends" and their "friends of friends" during the 2009 through 2013 school years, and

how this appears to have added value in knowledge generation. The pri-mary aim is to

identify what enhances productiveness in knowledge generation in Philippine Ter-tiary

Education. The phenomenological approach is used, therefore there are no specific re-

search questions or hypotheses proposed in this paper. Considering that knowledge

generation is a complex phenomenon, a stochastic modelling approach is also used for the

investigation that was developed specifically to study un-deterministic complex systems. A

list of salient features for knowledge generation is presented as a result. In addition to

these features, various problem types are identified from literature. These are then

integrated to provide a proposed framework of inclusive (friendly) and innovative social

networks, for knowledge generation in Philippine tertiary education. Such a framework is

necessarily multidisciplinary and useful for problem-solving in a globalized and pluralist

11
reality. The implementation of this framework is illustrated in the three parts of the study:

Part 1: Online lessons, discussions, and examinations in General Psychology, Introduction

to Sociology, and Life and Works of Jose Rizal, for the author's students in De La Salle-

College of Saint Benilde; Part 2: Facebook Report analytics of students and teachers, their

friends and their friends of friends via Wolfram Alpha; and Part 3: Social Network Analysis

of the people and groups influencing the courses' scope-and-sequence in the new Gen-eral

Education Curriculum for Tertiary Schools and Institutions in the Philippines.

Dave Marcial(2013)Facebook users are increasing tremendously. Some

users are passive and some are active that leads to addiction. This paper measures

empirically the prevalence and degree of facebook addiction in the Philippine university. A

total of 355 university students was evaluated in the study. The Begen Facebook Addiction

Scale was use during the survey. The study reveals that 15 out of 355 respondents are

addicted to Facebook. The degree of addiction among the Facebook-addict respondents is

high. It is concluded that Facebook addiction in the university exists but the ratio is

extremely unlikely.

Abdulwahaab (2016) Using social media networking takes most of the time of students and

redirects it towards non-constructive, often non-ethical, deceptive and improper activities,

for example, texting and chatting with friends for most of the time of the day, time killing by

searching for peoples’ private life and avoiding their real jobs and studies. Youth especially

students for the most part utilize social media for time killing and purpose of happiness

however it has been found out that web use for academic reasons and assignments

12
including online instructional exercises, online classes and training material downloading

is a positive step. However, utilization of web especially social media for just informal

communication is just a wastage of time and futile.

The study of Ancheaw and Larson (2015) had a field data 2013, when

respondents were asked how much time they spent on their social media sites, 1001 of the

respondents representing 66.3 % indicated that they spent thirty minutes to one hour, 485

respondents representing 32.2% spent between two to three hours and the last group of 22

respondents representing 1.5% said they spent between four to five hours a day on the

social media sites. The deduction is that 1486 of the respondents representing 98.4% spent

between thirty minutes to three hours on social media.

Conclusion

The use of social media among the students has influence them in many

ways, some are beneficial like enabling them to communicate with their fellow students or

with friends outside of their school, find new potential friends, help them in their studies by

searching the internet for answers or information on their assignments, projects, or to

review for their exams. Other benefits are the freedom to do anything and be entertained

by letting them have the option to hide or change their identities on social media, playing

online games with friends or offline games to kill some time. The disadvantages of using

social media is using it too much. Social media can promote addiction to the students,

distracting them of their academic duties. Social media can also change ones behavioral

patterns, have the potential to have mental illnesses that would result in the diminishing of

their academic performance.

Research Methodology

This chapter contains the research design, population and sample, locale of

the study, research instrument and data gathering technique.

Research Design

In this research the researchers used Descriptive survey as the research

design. Descriptive survey generally focuses on the feedback of the respondents to help the

researchers find answers to the specific problems.

Setting of the Study

This research was done at the Bethany Christian School of Tarlac Inc.

Population and Sample

The whole population of the Senior High School of BCS does not reach 100

students, due to this, all the SHS students were taken as respondents. The whole Senior

High School population is 94 students consisting of 42 students from the Grade 12 and 52

students from the Grade 11, however, the researchers failed to reach four students.

Research instrument

Four questions were asked by the researchers to their respondents to satisfy the

specific problems of the study. The first is about their gender and the grade level where

they belong. The second is a list of social media where the respondents were asked to

check their frequently used social media type. The third question is a list of common

16
activities done in social media. They were asked to check their frequency of use for such

social media. The last question was about the Impact of Social Media among the students.

The indicators were taken from Astodello (2016), Inquirer (2018), Wang, Chen, Liang

(2011), Ancheaw and Larson (2015), and lastly, Philnews (2018).

Data Gathering Technique

The researchers prepared a letter addressed to the school principal to inform

him that a research study on the Impact of Social Media among the students would be

undertaken and senior high school students would be taken as the respondents.

Upon approval, the researchers talked to the respondents and sought for

their available schedule for the survey. The respondents were given the survey

questionnaire during ICL time or during breaks to avoid disruption of classes. When all

the respondents were done answering the survey, the questionnaires were retrieved. The

collected data were tabulated, computed and analyzed.

Statistical Treatment

The researchers used the following statistical treatment to interpret the data.

1. Percentage

P = F/N X 100

Where P is percentage , F – frequency – N – total respondents

2. Average Weighted Mean

Formula: x = Fx

as the most done activity in 4-5 hours [which] is to "Watching videos with 22 respondents

or 24.44. The most done activity of SHS students in 2-3 hours is to "Talk or chat" . In the

column of the time given of 30 minutes to an hour, with 78 or 89.66 the indicator "To

upload photos" was done most within 30 minutes to an hour, not far is the act of "Make

new friends" where 62 respondents or 69.66 said they do in 30 minutes to 1 hour, while

only 39 or 43.82 played games in this given time, and 34 or 37.78 did school related topics

in 30 min-1 hour.

It can be concluded that Killing Boredom is the longest activity or the most

freauent purpose of students for using social media, while the activity with the least

amount of time spent by the students is to "Upload pictures."

the content of books are already in the internet” both got an AWM of 4.5 followed by the

indicator, “Communication with my friends about school-related topics boost my grades”

with 4.4. These tells us that these indicators have a great extent on their impact on the

students. Lack of interest in school and independence in learning got both an AWM of 4.0.

Bad grade and poor spelling and grammar gor an AWM of 3.7and 3.5 respectively which

means that there is an extent of the impact of social media among male students.

It can be posited that social media has an impact on the students to a large

extent among male students.

This table presents the significant difference of the Impact of Social Media

in terms of Gender among the Senior High School students.

The t- test distribution was used to test the hypothesis, "There is no

significant difference in the impact of social media in terms of gender.”

27
Using a level of significance of 5% with a critical value of 0.004243, the

computed t- value is 3.796025; hence the computed t value is greater than the critical

value so the hypothesis is rejected.

There is a significant difference in the impact of social media in terms of

gender.

Chapter 5

Summary of findings, Conclusions and Recommendations

This chapter contains the summary of findings, conclusions and

recommendations. The summary of findings will be the result of the survey questionnaires

and the data that was gathered. Conclusion will be the end result and the end statement of

the researchers. The recommendations will be from the conclusion and will be the

recommendation of the researchers about the The Impact of Social Media among Bethany

SHS S.Y 2018-2019.

Statement of the problem

1. How are the respondents described in terms of.

1.1. Gender

1.2 Grade level

2. What social media are frequently used by the respondents?

3. How long do the respondents use social media in doing given activities?

30
4. What is the Impact of Social Media among Senior High School students of Bethany

Christian School?

3. Does the Impact of Social Media among the students differ in terms of gender?

4. Is the frequency on the use of social media dependent on the social media activities of

the respondents ?

Summary of findings

1. Facebook is the most frequently used out of all the given Social Media with 85 or

94.44%, while , Tumblr is the least used by the SHS students with 4 or 4.44%

2. The longest activity done in social media by SHS is to Kill Boredom with 28 students

or 31.11 doing it for 6 hours and above while "To upload photos" is done the most

within 30 minutes to an hour by 78 or 89.66 respondents.

3. For the males, the indicators with the highes computed AWM of 4.5 or indicators to

great extent are "Using social media while studying distracts me from doing my

school work" and "It makes studying faster and easier because the content of books

are already in the internet".

4. The indicators with the highest AWM for the females are "Communication with my

friends about school related topics boost my grades" and "Using social media while

studying distracts me from doing my school work" with the computed AWM of 3.7

or to an extent.

5. In both male and female the indicator "Using social media while studying distracts

me from doing my school work" has the highest computed AWM of 4.5 and 3.7,
31
while "Poor grammar and wrong spelling has the lowest of both computed AWM

being 3.5 and 2.1

6. The chi square distribution was used to test the hypothesis, “There is no

significant relationship of the activities in social media to the frequency of social

media use."

At a 5% level of significance and a degree of freedom of 28.87, the computed chi

value is 207.11. the computed chi value is greater than the critical value, hence the

hypothesis is rejected.

7. The t- test distribution was used to test the hypothesis, there is no significant

difference in the impact of social media in the students in terms of gender.

Using a level of significance of 5% with a critical value of 0.004243, the computed t-

value is 3.796025; hence the computed t value is greater than the critical value so

the hypothesis is rejected.

Conclusions

1. Facebook is the most frequently used Social Media , while Tumblr is the least used

by the SHS students.

2. Killing Boredom is the longest activity that students do in social media, while

students spend the least amount of time for uploading pictures.

3. Social media has an impact on the students to a large extent among male students.

32
4. For female students, the impact of boosting of grades and distraction from school

work only goes to an extent.

5. For both genders using social media while studying distracts them from doing my

school work has the highest extent of impact if based on indicators' both AWM, while

poor grammar and wrong spelling has the least.

6. There is a significant relationship of the activities in social media to the frequency of

use of social media.

7. There is a significant difference in the impact of social media in terms of gender.

Recommendations

From the conclusions, the researchers recommend the following.

1. The school administration together with the teachers must guide students on using

Facebook, so that there is no overusing it. Rules regarding unappropriate social media

posts should be implemented.

2. Students should find a hobby that will make their time much productive than using and

wasting a lot of it just by killing boredom on social media.

3. They further suggest that the school administration should have seminars regarding the

impact of social media to students to give them tips on how to cope with it.

3. Parents should teach and keep watch of their children on the use of social media, to make

sure it is being used effectively and worth the time spent on it.

33
4. Students should be more responsible by knowing how to manage their time using social

media in a less distracting way.

5. Students set their phones aside when working on their school works and mute their

unnecessary group chats with friends while they are working and studying.

6. Researchers may conduct a study about the more specific effects that is related on how

often students use social media.

7. Other researchers may conduct a study about more focused impacts of social media on

different genders, the advantage and disadvatages.
