Chapter 1

THE PROBLEM AND ITS BACKGROUND

Academic success is important because it is strongly linked to the

positive outcomes we value. Academic achievement is important for the

successful development of young people in society. Students who do well in

school are better able to make the transition into adulthood and to achieve

occupational and economic success.

The academic performance is defined by students’ reporting of past

semester CGPA/GPA and their expected GPA for the current semester. The

grade point average or GPA is now used by most of the tertiary institutions as

a convenient summary measure of the academic performance of their

students. The GPA is a better measurement because it provides a greater

insight into the relative level of performance of individuals and different group

of students.

Students nowadays get distracted very easily. If they think the subject

is too boring, they would just either sleep or talk to their seatmates. When a

student slept in their class it’s either in the two: 1st he/she is a working

student or 2nd he/she stay up all night just to stalk, chat with friends or

anything they do using their social media accounts. To be specific their

Facebook accounts, student stay up late checking they're account and the

consequences is that they are late or they lack in performance.

1
What is Facebook? Facebook is a social networking websites and service

where users can post comments, share photographs and link to news or other

interesting content on the web, play games chat live and even stream live

video. Mark Zuckerberg with Edward Saverin who created Facebook in

February, 2004 as a school based social network at Harvard University.

Facebook may be accessed by a large range of desktop, laptops, tablet,

computers and smartphones over the Internet and mobile networks. After

registering to use the site, users can create a user profile indicating their

name, occupation, schools attended and so on. As of April 2016, Facebook

was the most popular social networking site in the world, based on the number

of active user accounts. Facebook classifies users from the ages of 13 to 18

as minors and therefore sets their profiles to share content with friends only.

2
Significance of the Study

The result of the study will be beneficial to the following people along

the conceivable outcomes referred to:

Teachers: This study may help them know why some of the students lack

academic performance, because of their obsession in using Facebook.

Students: This research may help them know the possible outcomes or

effects of Facebook towards their behaviors and studies. This may help them

to learn time management.

Parents: This research may help them know that their teenage daughter/son

is having a problem in their academic performance if they keep on using

Facebook before school works.

Theoretical Framework

The “Social Information Processing Theory” by Joseph Walther in 1992. “Social

information processing theory (SIP) is an interpersonal communication theory

explaining how people get to know one another online, without nonverbal

cues, and how they develop and manage relationships in the computer-

mediated environment. However, online interpersonal

relationship development may require more time to develop than

traditional face-to-face (FTF) relationships. Once established, online personal

3
relationships may demonstrate the same relational dimensions and qualities

as FTF relationships. Online relationships may help facilitate relationships that

would not have formed in the face-to-face world due

to intergroup differences, geographic challenges, etc.”

The “Media Equation Theory” by Byron Reeves & Clifford Nass of the Center

of the study of Language and Information at Stanford University. Reeves and

Nass were interested in how people interact psychologically and socially with

the new media. Borrowing from the methodology and findings of experimental

psychology and the social sciences, they conducted a 4 year-long series of

experiments whose results all support their astounding conclusion “that an

individual interaction with computers, television, and new media are

fundamentally social and natural, just like interactions in real life.”

Statement of the problem

This study aims to know the effect of Facebook in the Academic

Performance of the Grade 11 Bread and Pastry and Electricity Students in

Pasay City South High School.

The following question will be our guide for the success of this study.

1. What does Facebook bring to the lives of the students?

2. Is Facebook useful for studies of the students?

3. Is the use of Facebook beneficial for students or does it simply distract

them?

Hypothesis

H1: The student who have a high usage on Facebook, can have a higher risk

in his/her academic performance.

5
Scope and Delimitation

The main purpose of this study is to provide information regarding the

effect of Facebook in the academic performance of Senior High School

Students. This study considers the student's personal information such as

their name, age, sex and section. The researchers limited the study to 50 male

and female Grade 11 Bread and Pastry and Electricity Student in the 1st

semester of school year 2017-2018 in Pasay City South High School. Each

student will be given a questionnaire to answer. The students selected came

from two different sections to avoid prejudice of their perceptions. In order to

assure manageability of the collected data, the questionnaires only included

checklist, and did not include open-ended response item.

Review of Related Literature

“An extensive use of Facebook by students with extraverted personalities

leading to poor academic performance. However, students who are more self-

regulated more effectively control their presence on these platforms. Trust in

people does not affect their presence and interaction on this platform. Yet

students' cognitive absorption with Facebook is only regulated by their self-

control and their personality traits, which determines how much time they

spend on Facebook. Multitasking skills moderate the effect of cognitive

absorption on academic achievement, but they do not impede the time spent,

frequency, or nature of use or their effect on academic results. Although

students' satisfaction with life significantly declined due to cognitive

immersion into Facebook, it appeared not to play an effective role in the

students' academic achievement. However, their performance goal orientation

was shown to be a crucial determinant of their university accomplishments,

which would limit the critical effect of their presence on the Facebook platform.

Discussion and Conclusion: Results support in part earlier conclusions about

personality traits that rule the presence on Facebook. Trust does not impede

on Facebook usage as it determines surfers' use of Internet. Self-regulation

and performance goal orientation characterized the students who are more in

7
control of this social activity. In turn, this prohibits the apparent negative

effect on their academic performance. Results help students to understand the

preliminary consequences of their extensive usage of Facebook and to better

manage their social activities on this platform.” (Rouis, S., Limayem, M., and

Salehi-Sangari, E., 2011. Vol. 9, no 3, pp. 961-994)

According to Newman, (2013) students get distracted from their studies, and

a load of their work makes it hard for them to have focus and to prepare for

their homework or projects. This will to disappointment because of poor

results and it affect achievement. Some studies show the attitudes, interest

of students to the internet and their activities vary with sex, personality traits

and ages.

Ellison (2007) “emphasize on further investigation into the issue to find some

more variables like focus and intervention that may be strongly related to

academic performance. The negative correlation between Facebook usage and

academic outcomes may be justified by some negative academic impact

related in certain ways students use this social medium. He observes that

some specific uses of this social media relate to improved academic

performance while others contribute to lower academic results.”

“Students who use Facebook and hit the books simultaneously found their

multitasking led to 20% lower grades than those of their more focused peers.

8
Facebook – using students also made less money during school from part –

time work, putting in around five hours per week as opposed to 16 hours per

week for a typical, unplugged counterpart. Not only do grades and finances

suffer, but students might actually end up feeling more depressed or lonely.

Almost half of students believe they are sadder than their friends on Facebook,

and 25% of college students have shown signs of severe depression in their

updates at one time or another.” ( O’Dell, J.,2011 April 27)

“The greatest motivating factor for children to use technology in grade 7 and

up is to connect others; to socialize. Their irresistible need to connect with

their peers, coupled with the development of 24/7 accessible technologies,

can make the use of sites like Facebook all consuming. We have concerns of

children and teens growing up in a world where they are wired 24/7 without

a break. For many of our kids there is little or no “down time.” Some have

difficulty disengaging from social life. For some, it even raises their anxiety

level to be without their cell phones for a few hours! We don’t believe this is

healthy for them.” ( Monroe, M.,

9
Local Literature

Social networking sites let individuals to present themselves, and begin or

keep connections with others. The extremely popular social network site for

Students indifferent levels, Facebook, has already printed a big impact on their

lives. The site can be used towards work-related contexts, romantic

relationship commencement and connecting those with shared interests.

Members may use the site to mingle with people they already know offline or

to find new friends. Facebook permits its users to present themselves in an

Internet profile, build up "friends" who can post comments on each other's

walls, and view each other's page. Facebook associates can also join groups

based on common interests, see what things they have in common, and learn

each other’s hobbies, interests, favorite music, and romantic relationship

status through their pages. But what are behind these facts? What does

Facebook bring to the lives of the members especially to the students? How

does Facebook affect the life of a student? According to studies, Facebook has

an impact to students. Some students are using it for educational purposes.

Students would like to do some online collaboration with classmates. It is said

that Using Facebook boosts students’ self-esteem even more.11

10
They would feel belongingness in the community compared to those who do

not have accounts. It also provides news on what are happening in the real

world and even in their school campuses. On the other hand, negative effects

flourish. It was found that social networking sites has formed a new kind of

addiction which we called the "social media addiction" and it is quite true in

using Facebook. Are you addicted to Facebook? Some would say "yes" and

some would say "no". It depends on the level of cravings. But in the recent

study, it was found that a lot of students are by now addicted to it, to the

extent that their school performance is affected. "Children who spend much

of their time online find it harder to focus in class and have short attention

span " researchers found through the samples that 7 out of 10teachers

believed that their students are becoming obsessed with social media sites

such as Facebook. Their students tend to study while using Facebook and it

shows that they got 20% lower grades. Facebook-using students even

perform task (projects or assignments) without completion for the reason that

they spend more time scrolling down on their newsfeed to see updates about

their friends and look up for their notifications rather than finishing their school

tasks. Aside that Facebook affects students’ academic performance; it also

has an effect on students’ emotional health. Yes, students feel connected to

others but study shows that they manifest depression through seeing their

status updates. Some would utilize the site to express what they feel towards

their enemy in school or even outside the campus. They would blurt out

11
through posting status that would target their opponent just to hurt their

feelings. With the rampant use of all the social networking sites, students are

coming loose to the real associates. Facebook chats and posts would make

them busy nowadays. They12

may be connected to many people but they somehow disconnect with the

important aspects of their lives and one of those is education. The belief of

meeting people face to face seems very odd. Students prefer to send and

receive instant messages or post messages through Facebook. Many other

elements could be the reason for the inattention in studies of students. But

somehow social networks like Facebook have a negative impact on the

education of some students. Facebook could make students vain for better or

for worse and it is the parents' obligation to watch and guide their children to

get the utmost good benefits from Facebook.

How do Social Networking Sites Affect Students?

Most of the time, students spend their time hanging around the web with the

popular social networking sites. Everyday more and more people are getting

more attached to Social Networking sites as it is now moving in as one of the

primary means of communication of people. Facebook, Twitter, and Google+

were only a few of the tons of the sites out there that caters the need of

people. Through Social Media, people has the chance to combine work and

12
relaxation. However, did you ever encounter the question. How do Facebook

affect your life? And what is your answer?

What are the benefits a student can get by using Social Networking Sites?

Here are some points:

•Get in touch with your loved ones, relatives, and friends

•Get to know the latest news and issues

•Participate in online discussions

•Communicate with your classmates

•Be reminded of assignments, projects, and quizzes

•Conduct group meetings for group projects and announcements

•Get the latest status and messages of your friends through the News Feed

Obviously, social sites have a lot of uses for people with their exceptional

functionalities. Even without meeting in person, people can now interact with

each other and make a productive gathering. However, despite the fact that

Social Media are extremely helpful, it is still not perfect because there are still

some negative points we can encounter while using it. Some of the bad effects

are:

•It invades your privacy

•It distracts you in everything you do

13
•Too much attachment to it may lead to spending too much time in it without

doing your tasks14

•There are some wrong information released by unauthorized people that

causes fear The mentioned good and bad effects were only partial and it also

varies depending on the person involved. Though some people still makes the

best out of Social Media, we can’t still forget the negative side of it. Maybe,

we should just ask ourselves on what is our current position in the Social

Networking World. The ever-growing technology helps us make our life easier

and better but we must be sure that we should treat it with moderation.

Facebook’s Impact on Student Grades

How does Facebook activity affect a student’s grades? Reynol Junco, a

professor at Lock Haven University in Pennsylvania, recently set out to

determine exactly that. Mr. Junco assembled a sample of nearly 2,000 college

students who self-reported details of their Facebook use: not just total time

spent on the social networking site, but specific actions taken such as

commenting, chatting, uploading photos or seeing what others are doing —

“lurking,” as Mr. Junco calls it. The study then stacked its subjects’ overall

G.P.A.’s against that Facebook activity. Students’ high school G.P.A.’s —

powerful predictors of college grades — were included in the study as control

variables, to establish subjects’ baseline academic ability and ensure no

dramatic swings in G.P.A. occurred that might belie other factors at play.

14
According to the outcome student academic performance is affected the more

they use Facebook Social platforms are mainly used by student for Socializing

activities. Rather than Academic purpose, (Oye,2012). In addition (Oye, 2012)

Said that majority of student feel that social platforms have positive impact

on academic growth. In other research conducted by Shana (2012) It was

certain that student use platforms mainly for chatting and making friends.

“The consequences of internet and social platforms on student academic

growth” a study than by young (2006) It seem that internet has spread its

wings to reach teenager’s School life. It was also observed by young that

students are more dependent in on internet to access entertainment.

Additionally, young said that internet though take a lot of time, and have less.

Impact on students It was observed by Wang (2011). That impact of social

platform rest on the degree of the usage Jeong (2005) observe that internet

Addiction is significantly and negatively related to student academic growth

as well as emotional attributes. Seo (2004) confirm Jeong statement when he

opined that the negative influence of internet is only on excessive users and

not on all users. Rather (2013 pp 69) over that: the social platforms which

are being used today with great desire and enthusiasm, have altered the way

of using. Internets in this modern age by defining online tools and utilities

which allow users for communication, participation and collaborative of

information online today’s young generation specially teens and youth are

using technology through innovative ways due to which they are referred to

15
as millennial and have changed the way they think work and communicate

even though they are in formative years of their life. Today’s youth because

of social platforms have become technology addicts and are quite with drawn

According to data gathered from several sources by OnlineEducation.net,

Facebook and Twitter are used to great benefit — sometimes. Students

welcome online engagement and resources; around 75% of student

respondents said they'd like to do some online collaboration for class, in

fact. Also, social media may have a positive impact on students' sense of

themselves in the community. Social media-using students were twice as

likely as other students to feel well-liked by their peers and to participate in

extracurricular activities. And 20% more of Facebook-using students (as

compared to students who didn't use Facebook) said they felt connected to

their school and community.

Using Facebook for log time causes low grades in studies as students give

more time and attention to their Facebook. Some students think that using

Facebook will not affect their studies and they came to know about the reality

when they get their results. Most of the times students keep using Facebook

and forget to study even they don’t care about their lunch and dinner. They

make friends and chat with them. It is common trend among Facebook users

that they make fake accounts and trap others. According to research’s, face

16
book has been considered a great cause in breakups among many relations.

Students forget about their other duties and start giving all the time in

pursuing, what will be the next on Facebook by them or their friends. This is

really not good for students as they must show more concern to their prior

duties, their family and relatives. Access of everything is bad, while using

Facebook students should keep in mind the time limit and other works and

responsibilities which hold more importance to their life than using Facebook.

O' Dell(2011)

Social media consists of online technologies, practicing activities or societies

that people use to generate content and share thoughts, visions, experiences

and viewpoints with each other (Television Bureau of Advertising, Inc., 2009).

The word social networking is known as the alliance of individuals into specific

set of potential groups or subdivisions. Social networking allows individuals to

express their thoughts to other users. Social networking is the leader in

promoting digital journalism (Thuseethan, S. & Vasanthapriyan, S., 2014).

Social network used for several purposes like promoting or distributing the

news contents all over the world.

Facebook is completely a communication tool for users’. Facebook is used by

the huge number of undergraduate students and graduate students on a

regular basis. There is huge amount of professional and common interest in

the effects of social networking on undergraduate student development and

achievement (Abramson, 2011). Students use Facebook in various ways to

17
accomplish a wide range of social responsibilities and just for fun too. In

university students’ perspective the widespread social media website is

Facebook,

Social networking sites and Facebook socializing via the internet has become

an increasingly important part of young adult life (Gemmill & Peterson, 2006).

Most of the high schools, colleges and universities get connected by internet

encompass individuals who are looking forward to mingle other individuals

with same point of interest, to gather and share knowledge and first-hand

information. Social networking websites act like an online society of users who

is familiar with internet.

The increase of Facebook usage among youths has raised concern about

Facebook addiction. This is because addictive behaviour is a behaviour that is

excessive, compulsive, uncontrollable and psychologically or physically

destructive (Lemmens, Valkenburg & Peter, 2009). A report shows that 48%

of youths between the ages of 18 and 34 years old log

onto Facebook once they wake up and 28% of them check Facebook on their

mobile phone even before getting out of the bed (Socialbakers, 2011). This

manifests a kind of Facebook addiction that demonstrates an inability to live

or function without it. Facebook addiction has adverse effects on youths such
18
as deterioration in academic performance (e.g: Young,1998; Kirschner &

Karpinski 2010), incompetence to interact in offline social settings (e.g: Chak

& Leung, 2004), lack of self-esteem (e.g: Buhrmester & Prager, 1995;

Valkenburg, Jochen & Schouten, 2006) and physical problems (e.g:

Chou,2001; Kraut & Seay, 2007).

Lin and Tsai (2002) found that those who are dependent on Internet spend

more time on Internet and are motivated by sensation seeking reasons.

Another study by Chou and Hsiao (2000) found that Internet dependents seek

entertainment, interaction and satisfaction in Internet use. Meanwhile, Liu,

Cheung and Lee (2010) found that Twiter users tweet for four types of

gratifications namely content, social, process and technology gratifications.

Sheeren N. Zulkefly & Rozumah Baharuddin (2009) found that adolescents

who spend more time on mobile phone were more likely to be addicted phone

users

Methods and Procedure

This chapter contains the research design. It represents the following: method

of research used, instrument or tools in gathering data, source of data,

method of collecting data and statistical treatment of data.

Research Design

This research aims to know the effect of Facebook in the Academic

Performance of students. This study incorporates a quantitative approach and

Descriptive type of research particularly the correlational type of design.

Quantitative methods emphasize object measurements and the statistical,

mathematical, or numerical analysis of data collected through poll,

questionnaire, and surveys, or by manipulating pre-existing statistical data

using computational techniques. Quantitative research focuses on gathering

numerical data and generalizing it across groups of people or to explain a

particular phenomenon. It included experiments, surveys and statistical

analysis, among others.

20
Research Instrument

The researchers used a survey like of Questionnaire, this questionnaire is the

main instrument used by the researchers to gather permanent data on the

effect of Facebook in the Academic Performance of students. A total of 14

items were used to measure their perception. Out of these, the questionnaire

consists of two parts. The first part is the demographic profile/ information of

the respondents such as name (optional), age, gender, strand for filling out

the questionnaire and the closed ended questions were the items are

Dichotomous and enumeration. The second part were the items being rate by

means of scale from 5 – strongly agree, 4 – agree, 3 – neither agree, nor

disagree, 2 – disagree, 1 – strongly disagree.

21
Statistical Treatment

The following statistics use to answer specific questions raised in the

statement of the problem and to interpret the data effectively, the researchers

will employ the following formulae/statistical treatment.

Chi-Square Statistics

The subscript “c” are the degrees of freedom. ”o” is your observed value and

E is your expected value. It’s very rare that you’ll want to actually use this

formula to find a critical chi-square value by hand. The summation symbol

means that you’ll have to perform a calculation for every single data item in

your data set. As you can probably imagine, the calculations can get very,

very, lengthy and tedious. Instead, you’ll probably want to use technology:

Chi-Test in SPSS.

Sample and Sampling technique

The chosen respondents of this study were the Grade 11 Senior High School

Students in Department of Bread and Pastry, Electricity. That been enrolled in

Pasay City South High School.

23
The respondents of the study are composed of 50 out of 2 sections which are

grade 11 B.P.E – Krypton and grade 11 B.P.E – Nitrogen.

Data Gathering

The researchers asked permission from the Adviser of B.P.E to conduct a

survey. Upon approval of the request letter, and after the instructor validated

the questionnaire, these were distributed to the Senior High School of grade

11 B.P.E – Krypton and grade 11 B.P.E – Nitrogen of Pasay City South High

School. The researchers personally administered the research instrument to

the respondents. The researchers discussed the significance of the study and

accomplish the distribution of the instrument properly
