INTRODUCTION

Barangay Alegria National High School is located at Municipality of Murcia

Negros Occidental. Almost 2 years that senior high school established in the said school.
We are the second batch to conduct research study entitled “The Effects of Facebook in
the Study Habits of Grade 12 Students” we want to know what are the reasons behind
why the grade 12 students addicted in using Facebook. What are the advantages and dis-
advantages in using Facebook? To extent Facebook affects the academic performance
and extra-curricular participations of grade 12 student. Facebook is a kind of social media
that attract the attention of students not only grade 12 but also the people who are
computer literates and social media followers. Facebook can influence people to do either
good things or bad things and it depends on the conviction of Facebook users.

The modern world require computer skills and literacy although the signal or the
internet connection is not good yet, but it is providing basic computer education so that
they will not left behind. Barangay Alegria provides basic computer education, before we
go to Facebook, What is computer literacy? Computer literacy is having understanding of
what a computer is and how it can be used as a resource. According to the 2017 survey
75% of the senior high students are addicted on Facebook. On the past few years students
are just addicted on the traditional play just for example luksong tinik, tumba patis,
chinese garter, and patintero but now because of the modernization some students got ill
because of the influence of social media namely the Facebook. Yes! Facebook is the
fastest and convenient source of communication in just one tap, one click, type a lot you
can message or call your family in abroad or in the far places. But in the wrong use of
Facebook it will affects your brain, your eyes and can cause seizure because of the
radiation. According to 2019 survey 2-3 years old child can spend time on gadget for
only 1 hour. For 5 years old and above it is advisable to spend time with gadget for only 2
hours but not that straight you must have a break. Or the doctor advice 20-20-20 means
every 20 seconds you will have a break. Be careful on using Facebook don’t let the
Facebook controls you but let yourself to control Facebook.
 STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM

This study will determine the ‘’The Effects of using Facebook in the Study
Habits of Grade 11 students for S.Y 2019-2020’’.

This study aims to answer questions.

1. What is the profile of the respondents when grouped according to:

a. Sex d. Socio Economic Status
b. Study Habit e. Hours Spent
c. Nutritional Status

2. What are the reasons why Grade-9 Carnation use Facebook?

3. What are the effects of using Facebook in the study habits of Grade-9 Carnation
students?

4. What are the suggestion to lessen the using of Facebook?

 HYPOTHESIS

To examine the problems stated the following null hypothesis are formulated and
tested.

H1: There is an impact of using Facebook to the respondent school performance.

H2: There is an impact of using Facebook to the respondents in terms of attendance.

H3: There is an impact of using Facebook to the respondents in participation of school

Academic and Extra Curricular Activities.
 INTRODUCTION

Student Absenteeism is rampant in the schools under study due to reasons such
as: lack of subject interest, poor teaching strategies by teacher, unfavorable learning
environment, too much socialization and poor relations with the teachers. This can result
to low self-esteem, social isolation and dissatisfaction that could well have precipitated
non-attendance at the first place. According to Epstein and Sheldon (2002) stated that
student with absenteeism miss opportunities to learn the material. That enables them to
succeed later in school. In addition according to Teasley (2004) Student absenteeism is
defined as a period of time when student does not attend school, has become major and
continuous problem among high school students in many countries. Indeed, numerous
studies conducted to answer a question that why high school students miss classes. There
are numerous risk factors that contribute to student absenteeism such as family health,
low income, poor school climate, drug and alcohol use, transportation problems and
community attitudes towards education. Based on what we can see and experience, Grade
10 students are so engrossed with absences that’s why most of the time, they have almost
completely forgotten about their academic work.

This study is conducted at Barangay Alegria National High School. Specifically,

in Grade-9 Rosal students for the purpose of knowing the factors that affects their
absenteeism. The main purpose of this study is to determine the Factors Affecting the
Absences of Grade-9 Rosal students.
 STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM

The purpose of this study will determine the Factors Affecting the Absences of
Grade 9-Rosal students for S.Y 2019-2020.

This study aims to answer questions.

1. What is the profile of the student when they grouped according?

a. Sex
b. Socio-economic status
c. Attendance

2. What are the most common problems of the students in school?

3. What are the impact of absenteeism to the academic performance of respondents?

4. Why does respondents absent?

5. What are the factors that can affect due to absenteeism of the students?
 HYPOTHESIS

To examine the problems stated, the following null hypothesis and formulated and tested.

H1: There is an impact to the students in relation to their academic performance in

school.

H2: There is an impact to the respondents due to their attendance.

Scope and Limitations

 The main purpose of the study is to provide information regarding the effects of
using Facebook in the study habits of grade 11 students of BANHS. The study consider
the students personal information such as their name (optional), gender, age, and section.

The researchers limited the study to 71 male and female secondary education
students enrolled in the first quarter up to second quarter of school year 2019-2020 in
BANHS. Each of the respondents was given a survey questionnaire to answer the
following questions. All the grade 11 students on one section only to prevent bias and get
objective perceptions.

Significance of the Study

 Everyone views social media (Facebook) as a distraction and that leads to students
to procrastinate in their works. Some students also claim that visiting Facebook helps
them to deal their problems in life. The purpose of this study is to know the effects of
using Facebook in the study habits of Grade 9 Carnation. This study would provide
information on how it affects them in-relation with their school performances. This study
will be beneficial to the following:

Students. This study gives the students an information about the effects of using
Facebook in their study habits. For them to know their limitations on using Facebook.

Parents. In this study, it helps the guardians/parents limit their daughter/son to be

aware of what is the effect of using Facebook to their students. Also for to have a further
knowledge about Facebook that it may give to their son/daughter a good effect or a bad
effect to their child.

School administrators. In this study, it helps the school administrators know the
effect of using Facebook in the study habits to their students. To get further information
about the effect of Facebook to the students. They may give a solution to it how to protect
the children on the school on the bad and good effect of using Facebook to the students.

Guidance Counselors. In this study, it can give an information about the effect of
using Facebook in the study habits towards the students. The guidance can take action
towards the effect of using Facebook in the study habits of students.

Future Researcher. This study serves as the reference to some related study which
is the effect of using Facebook in the study habits of students. For them to have
knowledge on this, to get further information about Facebook and its effect to the student.

Theoretical Framework
 Facebook may have good and bad effect to the study habits of the student but the
bad effect outweigh the good effect it is true that a lot can be done with Facebook to help
with students school work. According to Lifewire update by Daniel Nation Facebook is a
social networking website and service where users can post, comments, share
photographs and links to news or other interesting content in the web. Shared content can
be made publicly accessible or only among a selected group of friends, family, or with a
single person. As what we have observe in this generation, people are very social media
inclined, specifically the Grade 9 Carnation students as what we have researched in Grin
Facebook is at the forefront of the social media craze, has over 500 million active users
on its website every month According to Gold, 2011 Facebook usage has been associated
with both positive and negative effects to different aspects of students’ lives on the
positive effect, it can improve relationships, especially, academic performance according
to a fact one of the reason why students can’t seem to stop using Facebook is because of
its color. Color blue is an addictive color to eyes which led students to use it more.
