there are nearly 1.4 billion users that spread all around the world. Facebook become a
growing means of communication for every studens these days. Nowadays most of the
students love to spend most of their time in using Facebook while studying. According
to Hines (2011) around 96% of High School and college students are using Facebook
just for chatting friends, posting status update, uploading pictures and videos, playing
games and other non-school related activities which is it can be affect study habits and
consequent with their grades. Shaulis(2011) explained that instead of studying for the
big test the next day students are spending hours looking their pictures, commenting in
post, share videos that will become a great destruction to every students.

A study habits is very important characteristic to every students and to all human
being who are educated it can be learn to improve your ability of your reading habit.
Using Facebook in improper way is a big destruction to every students which is they
can’t focus on what they read and write. According to study done by (Kirsenhrera 2009)
the lack of study time due to hours of will show a bad effect on the study habits of every
student. Hence, the use of Facebook will worsen the ability of students in their interests
in their study habits.

Review of Related Literature and Studies

This chapter present the related literature and studies thorough and in depth
search done by the researchers. This research focus to analyzing the effect of
Facebook to the study habits of Senior High School Grade 12 HUMSS students.

Facebook

Facebook is use by many people to connect with their friends, family and relatives
around the globe. We can use it for business and educational purposes (Brydolf,2007).
Everyone specially student is fond of using Facebook and they can considered it as part
of their daily life .Students loves of sharing pictures , expressing their thoughts, feelings,
and ideas, blogging about new thing, and mingling with others though Facebook.
However, students that spend too much time in Facebook it can make less time for
studying their lessons.

According to Osharive (2005) social media such Facebook has a positive and
negative in Everett students every that the using Facebook primarily in high school and
college students. study conducted in the University of Lagos in Nigeria, Facebook
negative effect contain lack of privacy, distracting students from their academic work
and instead of studying and making assignment students are busy in checking
Facebook update and notification and they can develop and aggressive violent behavior
towards their family. Likewise, in the study conducted by students of Davao doctors
College affected by their time management, study environment and the doctors college
affected by their time management, study environment and their other interests.

As senior high school student have to be responsible in managing of your time in

the context of this study Facebook can be could to be and internet base area where
people communicate, socialize and have a idea with other and also to have a
opportunity to make new friends and use it in a good way. Zhao et. Al (2018)
investigated the identity found that Facebook users portrait their anonymous online
environment of Facebook, and they show rather than tell.

4
Therefore, the objective of the present this study of the effect Facebook to the
study habit of every students towards the social media particularly in Facebook, based
on their personality characteristics, on how to manage their time and their peer
influence. Teenager’s personality characteristics are measured in terms of extraversion.
agreeableness, conscientiousness , emotional stability and openness to experience.
Peer group pressure is based on informational, utilitarian and value expressive
statements. The study with conducted in schools in a small town and metropolitan city
in Greece provide an excellent laboratory for study as the internet penetration rate
exceeds 54% of the population and almost 60% of its use takes the form of posting
messages to social media (Eurostat, 2012)

Social Media

Social media are a collection of internet websites, Services, and practices that
support collaboration, community building, participation and sharing, this technologies
have attracted the interest of higher education faculty members looking for ways
engage and motivate there students to be more active learners it helps every students
to develops there confidence in communication.

Social networking help in the school and universities to leverage and compliment
formal education activities and enhance learning outcomes and compliment formal
education activities and enhance learning outcomes. In other words, social networking
can provide opportunities for new relationships as well as strengthening existing
relationships. Study habits are mainly external factors that facilitate the study process
such as sound study routines that include how often a students engage in studying
sessions, review the material, self evaluate, rehearse, explaining the material and
studying in a conducive environment.

College students who use social networking have significantly lover great point
average (GPAs) than who do not. Found a negative relationship between the use of
various media, including mobile phones, and self reported GPA among first year
University students in the United States. Facebook is the most used social network by
College students, followed by YouTube and Twitter that apostrophe students who
maybe reluctant to speak up on class are participating in books discussion blogs and

5
writing for real audiences. There are new web tools emerging all the time that are
enhancing learning.

This only show that technology is evolving at the very first rate and it affect very
apparent in the current generation. But as it is, technology like to sides of a coin, bring
with it both negative and positive sides. In today conducted in State University in Iloilo,
the results showed that they respond and study habits and academic performance were
to a high extent influenced by social networking. Most likely that this high influence may
have been result of easy access to and brought about by accessibility of gadget like
smartphones and other electronic devices with Mobile data and Wi-Fi connection. the
Affordability and availability of these gadgets in the market may have been another
reason.

Study Habit

Study habits is very important characteristic to every students and to all human
being who are educated, it can be learn to improve your ability of your reading habit.
Study habits, skills and attitude were found to rival standardized tests and previous
grades as predictor of academic performance. We found that study skills inventories
and construction are largely independent of both high school grade and scores on
admission test but moderately related to various personality construct. Study motivation
and study skills is the strongest relationship with both grade point average and grades
in individual classes. At a time there is overwhelming evidence that students are
devoting less time to their studies because of Facebook and other social networking
sites. It is critical for educators who desire to encourage and motivates their students to
engage in productive study behavior. Overall, study habit improves prediction of
academic performance and improving your study habits is the key to better studying and
a great tool to have in a toolbox in and we all know that good study habits are essential
to educational success.

6
Time Management

Studies have shown that teenagers are among top users of social networking
sites. There has been a trend in studies suggesting that teenager are spending a big
portion of their daily time on Facebook (Ahn,2012). The effect of this website on the
development of the youth stating that parents and teachers are concerned and
frightened by this connection between youth and social media. On the other hand,
scholars suggest that educators should accept the students these days are using social
media platforms to learn and that these educators should embrace this new platform
and use them their advantage.

Misra and McKean(2000) states that academic stress is cause by poor time
management. In this study, claims that although the average used among students is
100 minutes per day, only a small group of these students use internet to a degree that
affects other tasks in their life. Universities students are incline to excessive use of
internet and many students frail to manage their time on using Facebook and other
social media sites.

Influence of Facebook in Study Habits

In our society today, while technology is slowly taking a steady control over
individual lives, the study habit is fast vanishing into thin air, maybe things that can be
possible to be distract the study habit of every individual. Additionally Ezema and Ekere
affirm that students now lack the skill of reading. Instead of a spend more hours on
social media. The study of Jabr (2011) found SNSs are making a tremendous affect
nearly in every aspect of life. in fact, it had shifted as a tool for extending academic
learning and communication. SNSs are web based application that allow individuals to
create profile and share information with friends within the system. This “SNSs
Phenomenon” had permeated on the students and became the latest online Avenue for
social interaction, as well as academic interaction.

The influence in of these SNSs specially Facebook continuous to get increasingly more
pervasive, making actual and virtual realities almost indistinguishable. Students are

7
talking about the social networking related stuffs almost every single day; thus it would
be a surprise if any students never got involved with Facebook, Twitter are any other
SNSs nowadays. Moreover, students are paying more attention towards these social
networking activities rather than utilizing their time to study which surely affect their
study habit and reading habit. For instance Facebook has the phenomenal impact in
the amount of influence and increasingly has a large percentage of uses in school.

Previous research has examined the motives of behaviors and that the users
seek to gratify while using Facebook. In particular Facebook if used and adopted
primarily to maintain contact with a offline connections rather than to develop new
relationships. Facebook may differ from their after behavior on the site. Hence, making
a study adjusted, so as the provide information recording that uses actor behavior and
the manner Facebook is perceived by its uses nowadays. In the face of a success story
such as Facebook and observer could be wondering how do Facebook features
manage to keep so many active by regularly coming back, spending a considerable
amount on their time.

Maybe students lose the social grace of giving to respect to their teachers and
even to their parents after so much involvement in the social media its influences.
Proposed to that internet is advantages to both students and teachers if used as a tool
of knowledge creation and de dissemination this positive influence was also
investigated.

However, related empirical studies were reviewed on social media use and
student study habits. Empirical studies revealed that many studies have been
conducted on a social media affected students study habit. Some of The empirical
studies where carried in Nigeria and some outside in the country. Moreover, there is
known study that explored social media use and the study habits of secondary school
students in Awka Education Zone of Anambra State thus this present study will serve to
fill the gap Identified in the literature reviewed and it will contribute to the knowledge,
social media use and this today habit of secondary school students in Awka Education
Zone of Anambra State.

8
LOCAL STUDIES

Social media are online technology platforms that help to connect people
together far and near. It is used to build relationship among people. The use of social
media by students helps to have access to basic information as quick as possible. But
according to the following related local studies, this social media has other effects
especially to the Senior high school students.

The study conducted by Amora S.A.V. (2013) at Cagayan de oro city "study that
were gathered showed that there were high significant differences in the respondents’
time management and study techniques when grouped according to their Parental
Involvement and Teachers Personality". And it also said to the study of Llavore D. Et.al.
(2015) at La Union Philippines "found out: IQ and final grade are extremes as reflected
in the standard deviation. Also, the respondents 65.9 % or 56 are female while the
remaining 34.1% or 29 are male. Students responded that they need help on the
different criteria on the student habits except the criteria time management.

But according to Judilla A. Et.al. (2015) at Iloilo city "revealed a high extent of
influence of social networking on the respondents regardless of age, sex, socio
economic status, and educational attainment of their parents". And study of Kulidtod R.
Et.al. (2017) in Cotabato city, also said that the exposure of the IMEAS students to the
social networking media positively affected their academic performance". Because
according to the study of Dumpit D.Z. Et.al. (2017) at the Iloilo city "demonstrated that
perceived usefulness, perceived ease of use, subjective norm, and perceived
playfulness (happiness) are robust predictors of usage behavior of students".

But study conducted by Tamayo J. Et.al. (2014) in Bulacan city that "reveals
Students’ Prelim and Midterm Average and their Social Media usage were correlated
using Pearson ( r ) correlation and evaluated that there is moderate significant
relationship between Social Media and the Academic Performance". And the study of
Maitem A.G. Et.al. (2017) at Davao city "revealed that majority of respondents used
Facebook for making friends and chatting. In addition, majority of respondents
experienced negative effect such as less study time and due to the heavy participation
on

9
Social media networks furthermore, there was a high addiction rate among
students in the usage of social media networks". And it also said to the study of Arieta,
K.M. Et.al. (2017) also conducted in Davao city "implies results that most of the
respondents believe that their study habits are affected by their time management,
study environment, and use of social media, and that these factors impact their
academic performance. Another important finding shows a high-level of Senior High
School Students’ academic performance is greatly influenced by their use of social
media". And according to Carbonel L.G. (2013) in Tabuk city "implies that the study
habits of the students in College Algebra have great impact to their performance in the
said subject". Because according to the study of Isaac, M. (2014) at Laguna city "found
out that the higher the time spent on SNSs ( Social Networking Sites) showed the lower
is the time spent on studying".

And according to Bocar, A.C. (2017) at LSU "The findings disclosed that the
respondents’ study habits are good enough to some extent, but they still need to
develop their skills in some areas of their studies. Though there is none of the factors
utilized in this study that distract respondents’ concentration at all times" therfore the
SNSs have a correlations with the concentration in the study habits of students that
affects their Academic performance

FOREIGN STUDIES

Students embraced social media so as to interact with peers, for information

sharing, re- formulating their personalities and thereby getting their social lives off the
ground. Could this information be constructive in the field of education or destructive?
This laid down the foundation of this study.

The involvement of students in social media has increased considerably since

2004 and therefore the increase in assess to social media may also be leading to the
increase in negative effects. Since there is an increase in the users and it is an addictive
behavior, it is important to investigate it effects on study habits of the students. Current
studies carried out by some researchers reported that 80% to 90% of students in the
Universities are actively involved with at least a particular social media. This provided a

10
lead to this investigation on a specific area of influence that is study habits. And also
can affect their Time Management and their Concentration.

According to the study by Ogoemeka, O.H. (2013) the result indicated that
homed work and Assignment was potent predictor of the academic performance of the
students. The study also revealed that the best predictor variable of the academic
performance of the second year students was study period procedures while it was
Homework and Assignment for the third year students. It was also revealed from the
result that there was significant sex difference in five, out of the eight study habit
components skills, all in favors of females. Based on these findings, it was
recommended, among others, that courses in Study habits be introduced in the
institutions either in the department of Guidance and Counseling, or Educational
Psychology or Foundations of Education.

But a study by Lokesh S. V. Et.al (2017) Findings can be used Social work
educators by integrating it in classroom activities. At the same time this study is path
way for further studies with bigger scope and inclusion of demographic variables in
estimating Facebook addiction, social network or online addiction are recommended.

Based to Dr. Langat A. C (2015) the result revealed that many students’ use
social media especially Facebook, What sap and Twitter that they spend increasing
amount of quality time on these networks even during lecture hours. Findings of this
study suggest that social media could negatively impact on the students’ study behavior,
academic progress and that timed-off software should be installed to control its use by
students. This study will be of immense benefit to the university administration as it has
shown the potent dangers of uncontrolled use of these social media by students and
therefore the need to put in place measures to forestall its alluded negative effects.

The study conducted by Ebele Uju F. Et. Al (2017) The finding of the study
revealed that there is significant relationship between study habits and students’
academic performance. It was recommended that teachers and school guidance
counselors should collaboratively guide students on how to develop good study habits;
thereby enhancing their academic success.

11
According to Dr. P.J et. Al (2017) The study revealed that internet nonusers have
better study habits than internet users in respect to dimension wise, sex wise and
stream wise.

But a study based to Miguel A. Cerna Et. Al (2015) recollection of study habits
though interviews with high performing students show that they are mainly from low-
context and individualistic countries while most low performing students come from
high-context and collectivistic countries.

A study conducted by Shivani V. Et. Al (2017) the results are based on the
survey conducted on 200 adolescent studying in different schools in India. The findings
indicate that there is significant negative impact of Facebook to Addiction Disorder (FAD)
on study habits and academic achievement of adolescents.

According to ADEBAYO, F.A (2015) the results revealed that procrastination,

prioritization and were strong indices that affected the student’s academic performance
in relation to time management

And a study according to the study of A. VENCES CYRIL (2014) The results
showed that there is significant relationship between the Time management and
Academic achievement of Higher Secondary students. Keywords: Academic
Achievement, Higher Secondary Students, Time Management.
