ABSTRACT

The study was made to know reason of the students why students always choose

using social media and its effect on academic performance of the students in Headwaters

College Elizabeth Campus. Questionnaire was used for collecting data.

The respondents selected by the researchers this study revealed that majority of the

respondents had mobile phones which also had Internet facility on them and had knowledge of

the existence of many media sites.

The study further confirmed that most of the respondents visit their social media

sites using their phones and spend between 1 hour to 15 hours per day. In addition the study

revealed that the use of social media sites had affected academic performance of the

respondents negatively and positively that there was direct relationship between the use of

social media sites and academic performance. The study recommends among others that,

students with mobile phones having internet facility should be encouraged to use it

supplement their research in the library rather than the usual charting with friends all the time.

Students should be encouraged to limit the time they spend on their social media sites

per-day and advise them to rather substitute those hours to read novels to improve their

knowledge. Since the use of social media sites had affected the academic work of students

negatively and positively there is the urgent need for the introduction of students to the

availability of novels and other information resources or materials that can help them

academically.

THE PROBLEM AND ITS BACKGROUND

This Chapter present the Problem and its Background. It contains the Introduction,

Statement of the Problem, Significance of the study and Scope and Delimitation of the Study,

which will give the readers a brief idea about the Study.

Introduction

Social media has exploded as a category of online discourse where people create content,
share it bookmark it and network at a prodigious rate. Because of its ease of use, speed and
reach, social media is fast changing the public discourse in society and setting trends and agenda
in topics that range from the environment and politics to technology and the entertainment
industry (Asur and Hunberman,2010). In the last ten years the online world has changed
dramatically thanks to the Invention of social media, Young men and women now exchange
ideas, feelings personal information, pictures and videos at a truly astonishing rate. Seventy-
three percent of wired American teens now use social media websites (Oberst,2010).
Martin, (2008) & Lusk, (2010) share the same concept of social media. To them social
media is the use of Facebook, Blogs, Twitter, My Space and Linked. ln for the purpose of
communication, sharing photos as well as videos. However for the Purpose of this study social
media is captured within the use of internet through Facebook, Whatsapp, Twitter, Skype,My
Space as well as Yahoo Messenger for communication sharing of ideas. Sharing of photos and
videos by users. The increased use of Social Networking Websites has become an international
phenomenon in the past several years. What started out as a hobby for some copter literate
people have become a social norm and way (Boyd. 2007). Teenagers and young adults have
especially embraced these sites as a way to connect with their peers, share information reinvent
their personalities, and showcase their social lives (Boyd, 2007).

In the past years, social media Websites have become common; giving
new way to interact with each other and communicate with the world Social Networking became
popular between 2004 and 2006, after Facebook and Myspace were created. Facebook, for
example has over 500 million members and it is still growing an approximately 85% of
undergraduate students are Facebook users (Schneider, 2009). These numbers are expected to
grow since Facebook users will continue to grow. And this is not only true for Facebook,
numbers for YouTube users closely follow as well (University of New Hampshire, 2009)
Social networking websites provide tools by which people can communicate, share information,
and create new relationship. With the popularity of social networking websites on
the rise, our social interaction is affected in multiple ways as we adapt to our increasingly
technological world. The way web users interact and talk to each other has changed and
continues to change. These users now socialize through the internet and it takes away from the
person socialization that has been around forever. Social networking websites have affected our
social interaction by changing the way we interact face-to-face, how we receive information, and
the dynamics of our social group and friendships (Asur and Huberman,2010)
Social media was popular to all people in this generation especially to the millennials
because it can give the easily communicate to their loved once but social media has a huge
negative and positive impact not only for students but for all people who are addicted to using it,
social media was popular to all people in this generation especially to millennials because it can
give them easily communicate to their love once but social media has huge negative and positive
impact not only for students but for all people who are addicted to using it, so we chose this topic
because we want to resolve the problem about resulting in impact on their learning and grades.
This research is to find out the possible impact of using social media on students
Headwaters College Elizabeth Campus City of San Jose Del Monte Bulacan And to find out
what are also the benefits of using social media and last, what are the possible solution to this
problem.

REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE AND STUDIES

This chapter presents the Relevant Theories, Foreign and local Literature.
Foreign and local Study, Relevant of the Reviewed Related Literature and Studies to the Present
Study. Conceptual Framework, Null hypothesis and Definition of Terms. Which will give the
readers a brief idea about the study.

Relevant Theories

In relation to the SLT as stated by Bandura (1997), the use of the social networks (by the
individual or student) with friends (peers) on various social network platforms (situations) affect
his or her academic performance (learning outcomes). This is supported by Ain in et al (2015),
who “emphasized that individuals' cognition and behavior are influenced through observation
and interacting with peers and the situations (e.g., learning the environmental norms, cultures, 8
policies). It is the individuals' interaction with the environment that causes their behavioral
consequences”. “Therefore, individual interaction with peers, social support from peers and their
understanding of situations are important factors which affect individual learning outcome”
( DeAndrea, Ellison, LaRose, Stein field, & Fiore, 2012). Therefore, when students interact with
peers on social media platforms through observations, interactions and other activities, these
may result in a behavioral outcome which might affect the academic performance positively or
negatively. Also, the gratification theory which answered the second part of the study, holds that
people are responsible for choosing a particular media to meet their needs. That media in turn
compete with other information sources for viewers' gratification (Katz et al., 1974). Therefore,
the academic performance of students is as a result of the competition between social media
network participation and academic work. This implies that the amount of time invested

5

Headwaters College Elizabeth Campus
City of San Jose Del Monte Bulacan

participating on social media could affect the time allocated for studies by
could affect their learning outcome as a result.
.
Foreign Literature

Many researchers such as Choney (2010). San Miguel (2009) and Enriquez (2010)
Studies on students use of the social media sites revealed a negative effect of the use of social
Media sites on students’ academic performance. Nielsen Media research study conduction in
June 2010stand that almost 25% of students time on the internet is spent on social networking
sites(Jacobsen&Forste 2011). The American Education Research Association Conducted a
research and declared at its annual conference in San Diego California (2009). That social
media users study less and generate lower grade ( Abaletact al, 2014).
San Miguel (2009), focused on the relationship between time spent on Facebook and the
academic performance of students. The overall findings indicate “more tie Facebook equals
slightly lower grades”. In his study, the average Facebook users had a GPA of 3.5, while the non
Facebook user had GPA of 3.5, 4.0. Also the average Facebook user had a GPA of 3.0 to 3.5,
while the non-Facebook user has a GPA 3.5 4.0 also, the Average Facebook user study for 1-5
hours Per week. While the non-Facebook user would study 11-15 hours per week
Enriquez(2010), revealed that students who multi-task between social networking sites and
home work are likely to have 20% lower grades than a student who does not have a Social
networking site.

Local Literature

According to Rejie D. Astodello (Deceber 11, 2016) Tabuk City, Kalinga-People all

over the world have been enjoying the benefits of using technology nowadays, in the past,

communicating and free sharing of through between people are restricted by long distance, race

and even religion. But now these barriers can no sharing of though online social networking sits

such as Facebook. Instagram. Twitter, and the like.

Since students are highly motivated to using social media sites the majority of them use

these to satisfy their social needs more than their academic needs. They have the freedom to do

whatever they want – they can upload or download data, they can make new friends and

comment on other people’s live, and they can even create other online identities the real world does

not allow. It has been observed too that the majority of the students nowadays, particularly those

in the secondary, level, spend most of their time chatting with their acquaintances, playing

games, and watching videos instead of reading their lessons, making their assignments, and

other academic requirements, the main reason is when they work or search their materials online

they get attracted to social networking sites to kill boredom during study time, diverting their

attention from their work, the darker side of this that has gained the attention of many parents is

that some students are getting lazier and are no longer interested in going to school. This is

probably due to being extensively indulged to get global access and therefore leading to perform

less academically.

Republic of the Philippines

City of San Jose Del Monte Bulacan

Foreign Study

According to Kolan Ohn Bernard and patience Emefa Dzadza. As we know, nothing

interesting is ever completely one-sided, so it is for social media as it comes with

both positive and negative effects, there is correlation between social media usage

and academic performance of students in universities, there have been various

views and opinions which recognize four major advantages of social media of social

media use in higher education. These include; enhancing relationship. Improving

learning motivation, offering personalized course material, and developing

collaborative abilities (Wheeler, Yeomans an Wheeler,2008; Rifkin, Long necker, Leach

and Ortia,2009). Also, liccardi et al(2007), argued that students are socially

connected with one another and therefore share their daily learning experiences

and do conversation on various topics through social media whereas Kuppuswamy any

and Shankar (2010), reviewed that social network websites grab students’ attention

and the diverts it towards non-educational and inappropriate actions including

useless chatting.

Local Study

According to Josan D. Tamayo, in her study about impacts of using social media. In a

conservative country like the Philippines, there are still many assumptions from parents that

Social Media has negative effects on student’s academic performance. On the other hand, there

are parents who allow their children to be exposed to Social Media because they believed it will

help their children be more alert, smart and excel in school.

8
Republic of the Philippines
Headwaters College Elizabeth Campus
City of San Jose Del Monte Bulacan

To date, schools and institutions are experiencing many technological advancements and

changes in techniques in improving their teaching methods to meet the growing demands of their

students. There are schools which take advantage of the use of Social Media as a teaching aid.

Relevant of the Reviewed related literature and studies to the Present Study

This study Showed the relevant of literature and studies, foreign and local in the foreign

country the student who experience negative effect of using social media may result in lower

grades to the student. But then the Researcher in foreign country wants to resolve the common

problem in school because the possibility that the students may colt circumstances. In local

country the students who experience positive effects of using social media can result of being

friendly and active to others

They’re believed that sing social media have a huge negative effect for the performance

of the students that can result in lower grades for the students. They want to resolve it by doing

tie management so in that way possible that many students can prevent having lower grades. In

local study they’ll all know that using social media has both negative and positive effects for the

students not only for the students but for all people.

Sometimes using social media didn’t advisable for us because on social media we often

see bad pictures and our addicted to using it so in that way we will not being able to study

properly which results in lowering our grades, but on the other hand it helps our learning to

expand our knowledge or gain more knowledge.
