PRACTICAL RESEARCH 2

EFFECTS OF COMPUTER INADEQUACY IN THE ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE OF

GRADE 12 STUDENTS ANIMATION IN LUTUCAN INTEGRATED NATIONAL HIGH
SCHOOL

A. Introduction
Information and communication technology (ICT) has become an important source of
innovation and improvement of efficiency for many sectors across the globe. In the education
sector, particularly, the application of ICT has become a critical part of the learning process for
university students both outside and inside the classroom setting. The government and other
stakeholders in the education sector such as university management and researchers have invested
millions of dollars to adopt ICT in the education system during the last two decades. Most
universities that have fully adopted ICT have recorded immense advancement in the application
of ICT for the improvement of learning methods, teaching, research, and development. It is,
however, not clear what impact the ICT applications have on the performance and achievement of
students.

Ultimate power of technology is the information and the communication. ICT is vital for
social life, business and economy, to meet the demands of modern information society, and for the
1
progress of education (Aduwa-Ogiegbaen & Iyamu, 2005). Use of ICT in education improves the
quality and the quantity of education (Balasubramanian et al., 2009) and causes better innovative,
creative and cognitive thinking, higher productivity, efficiency, and educational outcomes
(Adeosun, 2010). ICT facilitates both instructional and learning process (Jung,2005) and has a
great influence on teaching and learning at higher education. It provides opportunity for
personalized, flexible and asynchronous learning and shifts the learning from teacher centered to
student centered and hence is a catalyst for reforms about classroom, educational institute,
community and system (Youssef & Dahmani, 2008). It enhances the learning of the students, helps
the students to learn new skills set, promotes social mobility, helps the citizens to compete in a
worldwide economy, and thus has a multiplier effect across the education system (UNESCO,
2014).

The purpose of this study is to discuss the effect of lack of computer on the laboratory of
the said school which greatly affect the academic performance of the students who are using the
computers. This study will provide specific suggestions on how to improve sufficient school
facilities which greatly aids in the academic life of the students.

B. Background of the Study

It is situated in Lutucan Integrated National High School wherein students encountered

computer inadequacy. Due to the insufficiency of computer, it may lead student to not competes
their task or performance that uses computer, efficiency. In addition, most of the students will not
be able to understand the lesson/activity that related to the need of computer, with this, it resulted
to lack of experience for the student since students not be able to do the activity in real life.

Computer has become very important nowadays because it very much accurate, fast and
can accomplish many tasks easily. Otherwise to complete those tasks manually much more time
is required. It can do very light calculations in just a fraction of a second. Moreover, it can store

2
huge amount of data in it. Also we can get information on different aspects using internet on our
computer. It is an electronic device used in almost every field even where it is most unexpected.

Students who study technical majors they are the one who needs computer. It is used for
the presentation of 3D models, creation of technical documentation, unit movement simulation,
assembly processes, presentation of the results of computational processes etc. Another important
application of computer animation in technical issues of assemblies of modelled parts. This types
of activities are possible by using CAD programs, including Autodesk Inventor. Through the use
of computer, they can easily apply their basic knowledge about animation to perform the
performance well.

C. Research Paradigm

F. Scope and Delimitation

The study mainly covers to understand the effects of computer inadequacy which mainly greatly
affects the performance of Grade 12 animation students. This study is limited to area of Lutucan
Integrated National High School with the respondents of Grade 12 Animation.

G. Significance of the Study

This research will help to determine how did computer inadequacy affects the academic
performance of students and also what can be the solution of school to this problem. This study
will be a great benefit for the following:
This would help the students to understand the effect of computer inadequacy that can
affects their academic performance that’s why they get lower grades. This research will help
future researchers to enhance their research skills. They can also have used this study as a
reference on a related topic regarding the topic computer inadequacy that will be needed among

CHAPTER II

REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE

EFFECTS OF COMPUTER INADEQUACY IN THE ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE OF

GRADE 12 STUDENTS ANIMATION IN LUTUCAN INTEGRATED NATIONAL HIGH
SCHOOL

According to Benjamin Herold (2016) technology is everywhere in education: Public

school in the United States now provides at least one computer for every five students. They spend
more done $3 billion per year on digital content. Led by the federal government, the teaching
resources available to even the most rural and remote schools. And in 2015-16, for the first time,
more state standardized tests for the elementary and middle grades will be administered via
technology than by paper and pencil.

The Philippine Star created an article last 12th of July 2014 about how technology helps
students study well. According to it more and more school use technology such as computers and
the internet in their classroom and several improvements on students have seen and they are now
getting better in education. These improvements are following the independence are the following:
Independence and information gathering, critical thinking and reflection, communication and
collaboration. More engaging learning experience and jobs later on. By connecting the internet,
students learn how to do their own research and with the large information that they access.
Students are induced to learn to think critically. Through exchange of ideas and messages, students
are able to collaborate with each other to test their understanding of lessons. Information today is
more engaging to the mind and the senses because of its multimedia nature. Knowing all of these
improvements and advantages, more and more schools are allowing not just desktop computers
and laptops, but also tablet devices and smartphones in their classroom.

According to John Paul Espinosa (2016) technological advance had greatly change the
education landscape in that teaching in no longer confined to the traditional face- to-face delivery
of lessons. Now, internet we can also learn not only in the classroom but outside the school.
Through the convergence of modern and traditional methods, students are now able to experience
6
the beat both of worlds. They can learn from school and get additional information or lessons
through the web and internet.

According to Glenny Laping (2016) according to it, technology is a way life. It is

everywhere in this computer age. Students use technology improperly and unproductively so
teachers should provide guidance for them. Also free educational tools are easier and faster to use
than the traditional tools. Teachers could use this to builds student collaborative, communication,
problem solving skill, critical and creative thinking skills. Technology alone cannot develop in
students the skills necessary to succeed in today’s world. Teachers and parents should teach and
guide the young to use technology the right way productively.

As society relies more on technology, students must be able to use technology for problem
solving, learning in higher education, succeeding in their future careers, and living their daily lives
(Sullivan, 2014). As society relies more on technology, students must be able to use technology
for problem solving, learning in higher education, succeeding in their future careers, and living
their daily lives (Sullivan, 2014). As technology has developed and education has embraced
technological tools, special education has also adapted to incorporate new strategies (Burdette,
Greer, & Woods, 2013). Web-based instruction and practices have become more prominent in
education, allowing students with a variety of disabilities to engage in online learning (Burdette et
al, 2013). Flory further states that it is not the use of technology itself that increases student
performance and engagement, but effective implementation. In order to guarantee that technology
is used effectively in a mathematics classroom, teachers must be properly trained and motivated
(Flory, 2012). However, Jacobs (2013) claims that technology itself does not necessitate academic
motivation. Research shows that teachers must employ technological opportunities that provide
access to a larger community or goal in order to improve a student’s academic motivation (Jacobs,
2013). Further study indicates that students with lower scores value technological instruction and
homework tools more than their higher performing peers (Leong & Alexander, 2013).

The availability of the internet also makes the use of computers, seemingly more interesting.
However, laptops may pose a challenge to some students with regard to the ease of use, especially

7
in economically- undeveloped countries. Computer literacy has improved over a recent year, but
novel software could be problematic for some pupils to purchase (Nejmeh, 2012)

Incorporating ICT has become a very important priority in the education sector. These
technologies can contribute to universal access to education, equality in instruction, quality in
teaching and learning and the professional development of teachers, as well as to more efficient
management and administration of education systems. Thus, they are essential to achieving more
egalitarian societies (UNESCO, 2014). The analysis ICT in the education sector is closely tied to
the objectives of quality, equity and efficiency (Sunkel and Trucco, 2012). Integrating these
technologies into schools means rethinking both the way in which these institutions are set up and
the practices that derive from that configuration. Consideration must also be given to curriculum
development and the work of teachers and students in the classroom.
Comi et al. (2016) studied whether ICT practices affected student achievement. The study
was conducted measuring a specific set of data depicting teacher use of ICT and assessment scores
on a national test for tenth grade students. After analyzing the data, one finding was that computer-
based teaching methods did increase student achievement, if the teacher is able to obtain materials
needed for preparation of lectures, and provided the delivery of the information increases student
awareness. The conclusion was that the effectiveness of ICT depends on teachers’ ability to
properly integrate ICT into pedagogy.
Ernst and Williams (2014) conducted a study to determine the capacity of service by
technology and engineering teachers servicing students who qualify for accommodations and those
students who are Limited English Proficient (LEP).
Arukaroon et al. (2017) stated in their study that the benefits of the use of ICT are not
always observable. They compared the use of ICT with students to the non-use of
ICT in the classroom. Two groups were studied and the researchers’ conclusion is that the
subjective norm appears to be the only effect on students’ behaviors. The researchers’ opinion is
that ICT integration is not an effective tool for teaching at any level of educational achievement.
(Sampath Kumar & Manjunath, 2013) in quantitative studies has found that teachers and
research scholars have been using the internet to support their research and teaching. By the use

8
of the internet, it's had a positive impact on their academic performance, namely by writing
research papers further help in doing better research and also provide a better learning experience.
Besides, according to (Sushma et al., 2014) the more time spent with the Internet, the higher a
student addicted to the internet. The study showed that the time spent on the internet is becoming
a measure of academic achievement. The use of the Internet beyond the time will not be a hint of
academic success.
Therefore, it can be said online media use affects academic performance. The social media
has a negative effect on student’s academic performance (Asemah,, Okpanachi & Edegoh, 2013).
While, (Shakir Ullah et al., 2013) shows that the facts about the electronic media the authorized
agent of socialization and realize it can educate the public and it can help students in their lessons
better than any other.
Yesilyurt et al. (2014) showed that access to a home computer and internet connection
contributes to students’ academic performance as well as self-learning skills.
The study pointed out that students see the internet as a source for general knowledge, and
it really helps them improve their reading habits leading to an improvement in their academic
performance. Siraj et al. (2015) affirmed that students perceived the internet as a supplement for
learning and thus contributes to higher academic feat. Ogedebe (2012) agreed that majority of
students obtain relevant information such as academic materials from the internet
Kim (2011) to be the habit of adolescent academic achievement. A similar study conducted
by Ruth and Adedotun (2015) posited that the source and access to information can influence the
academic performance of secondary school students.
Ngoumandjoka (2012) found that the internet is not mostly used for academic purpose
rather for recreational activities. A similar work by Singh et al. (2013), brings to fore that students
are more into the use of the internet but in reality they are using it mainly for non-academic
purposes like mailing, gaming and social networking. This led to losses in their study schedules.
This brings to the fore the controversy among empirical studies on the influence of internet use on
the academic performance of students.
The activities done by secondary school students on the internet have been scaled by
AkinAdaeamola (2014). The study revealed that the topmost activity done by secondary school
students is chatting, followed by downloading, watching videos online, surfing the web, using the

9
internet to study for school work, looking for other websites such as sports websites, reading news
online, games websites and lastly online shopping.
The study pointed out that students see the internet as a source for general knowledge, and
it really helps them improve their reading habits leading to an improvement in their academic
performance. Siraj et al. (2015) affirmed that students perceived the internet as a supplement for
learning and thus contributes to higher academic feat. Ogedebe (2012) agreed that majority of
students obtain relevant information such as academic materials from the internet.
A study by Ellore et al. (2014) on the influence of internet usage on academic performance
and face to face communication revealed that as a result of the availability of internet, most
students have had access to internet on their cellphones. This helps students to broaden their
academic knowledge (Siraj, et al., 2015). The use of computer and access to online resources
according to Akende and Bamise (2017) are comparatively important to students.
Ngoumandjoka (2012) categorized internet users into heavy and light users. In his view,
academic work is the main reason students use the internet on campus. Students who were
classified as heavy users were found to use the internet more for recreational purpose than the light
internet users. His study further argued that the more the internet is used for academic work the
more it is perceived to exert a positive influence on academic grades. A number of authors (e.g
Torres-Diaz et al., 2016) equally agreed that internet usage has a positive impact on academic
performance. They opined that students who tend to use the internet more on educational materials
are less likely to fail their examinations. Therefore, the disadvantages of lack of access to internet
surpass the advantages. Also people who perform interactive activities with peers and teachers or
when they make a balance use of internet tools for their course work tend to have greater academic
performance (Torres-Diaz et al., 2016). In Nigeria, the impact of computer literacy on students’
performance in secondary school has been explored by Aitokhuehi et al. (2014).

RESEARCH METHODOLOGY AND PROCEDURES

This chapter flaunts the research design, respondents or the people concerned in this
study, the research tools, employed, data gathering procedures and statistical instruments utilized
by the researchers.

Research Design

The method of research applied by the researchers was descriptive method to be able to
distinguish the effects of computer inadequacy in the academic performance of grade 12 student’s
animation in Lutucan National High school. The researchers considered the descriptive method as
an indispensable method to be used for it describe situations. It doesn’t make accurate predictions.
Moreover, it also interprets the status of a certain group of object, class or people. According to
Wikipedia.org, descriptive research describes data and characteristics about the population or
phenomenon being studied. Calderon, J.F., & Gonzales, E. C. (2010) stated that descriptive
research describes and interprets what is. It is concerned with conditions of relationship that exist;
practices that prevail; beliefs, processes that are going on; effects that are being felt, or trends that
are developing. This method guided the researchers in determining the difficulty experienced in
the traditional system. The researchers discovered the cause and effect of using traditional system.

Research Locale

This research study conducted in the Lutucan Integrated National High School. The
respondents of this study are 20 animation students. There were randomly selected within the
locality of Quezon. Only those animation students are the respondent of this study.

11
Population and Sample

The target population includes some selected animation students in Lutucan Integrated
National High School. From this population, samples of twenty (20) animation students are drawn
to participate in the research and twenty (20) questionnaires are administered them to get the
conclusion and analysis from their response.

The researcher use quota sampling since it defines as a non-probability sampling method in
which researchers create a sampling involving individuals that represent a population. Researchers
choose these individuals according to specific traits or qualities. They decide and create quotas so
that the market research samples can be useful in collecting data. These samples can be generalized
to the entire population. The final subset will be decided only according to the researcher’s
knowledge of the population.

Research Instrument

The researchers applied the questionnaire as the main data gathering instrument which was
made of three parts.

It is a closed ended survey questionnaires were administered to collect primary data. The
use of questionnaires is justified since it is an effective way of collecting information from large
samples in a short period of time at a reduced cost. In addition, a questionnaire facilitates easier
coding and analysis of data collected since they were standardized. All variables were measured
on a 5-point Likert scale with the description of 4- strongly agree, 3- agree, 2- disagree and 1
strongly disagree. The research instrument that was used in this study is a research -made survey
questionnaires which composed of two parts.

Part one deal with the profile of the respondents. Part two showcase the Effects of
Computer Inadequacy and divide it in to two (2) table. The first table shows the effectiveness of
ICT integration for students learning and the second table shows the students attitude.

12
Preparation and Validation of the Questionnaire.

The researchers conducted an intensive study, browsed lots of web pages, wide array of books,
reviews and other unpublished materials to be able to fabricate then first draft of questionnaire.
Right after the researchers constructed the first draft, it was consigned to the research adviser for
approval otherwise improvements. On finalizing the questionnaire, the researchers scrupulously
managed to check for the minimal errors that needs revision. Subsequently, the researcher encoded
the questionnaire. The modified survey questionnaire was properly distributed to twenty-five (25)
animation students of Lutucan National High School.

Data-Gathering Procedures.

Before the questionnaire was distributed to the respondents, the researchers send a letter of request
to seek the approval of the school administrator and head. After the approval of questionnaire, it
was distributed by the researchers in the animation students of Lutucan National High School.
Students in the group assisted the respondents on distributing and how they will answer the
questionnaire through google form. After a day, the survey instrument was retrieved. Twenty-five
out of twenty-five google form were collected. Then the data collected were evaluated, tabulated
and interpreted.

13
Statistical Treatment of Data

The researchers applied the following statistical tools in treating the data. The completion of this
study is deeply reliant on the standard statistical tool. The data from the questionnaire are used to
answer the statement of the problem of this study. The results are carefully recorded, tabulated,
and analyzed with the use of appropriate statistical treatment.

To answer the questions and assess the effects of computer inadequacy in the academic
performance of grade 12 student’s animation in Lutucan Integrated National Highschool in terms
of effectiveness of ICT integration for students learning and content student’s attitude, weighted
arithmetic mean was used following this formula:

Mean= Sum of All Data Points / Number of Data Points

The computed arithmetic mean will be verbally described using the scale as follows:

Weighted Arithmetic Mean. Verbal Description

3.26-4.00 Strongly Agree
2.51-3.25 Agree
1.76-2.50 Disagree
1.00-1.75 Strongly Disagree
