CHAPTER I
Introduction
The ease with which people can access the internet today has made it one of the most
widely used platforms for communication and information seeking (Ramamohanarao et al.,
2007). However, since the internet is regarded as a very informative and entertaining
medium, people frequently engage in a variety of activities there, some of which have
potential to become addictive. Social media use is one of this activity. (Kuss & Griffiths,
2011)
Social media has spread across the world and is now a vital tool for communication
between friends, families and peers. According to Dearborn (2014), social media is a
communication channel that is very popular, extremely fast, broad, has proven to be highly
effective, and as well as trusted by billions of people to share and discover content
Social media introduction in the past ten years has undoubtedly drawn a lot of people,
particularly students. Thus, social media’s widespread appeal may be cause for concern,
particularly given that students are spending an increasing amount of time online, which may
have an impact on their behavior. It is concerning enough that people use these platforms
excessively because it could result in social media addiction. Walker (2011) defines social
media addiction as condition in which a user spends excessive amounts of time on social
media (such as Facebook, Twitter and Instragram), to the point where it adversely affects
other facets of his or her daily life, such as school, work, relationships and interpersonal
behaviors.
3
Additionally, according to the American Psychological Association (2014), addiction
is defined as a “compulsive behavior that leads to negative effects” in which, similar to other
types of addictions like those to drugs, gambling, video games, overeating, etc., people feel
compelled to engage in certain activities to the point where they develop unhealthy habits,
which then interferes with other crucial activities in their lives like other school work and
performance.
On the other side, due to their addiction to social media, students often become
influenced by what they see and experience there. This is a severe issue since it might have a
bad effect on the students’ behavior, which is demonstrated in their school behavior.
It is undeniable that the extent of use of these numerous platforms given rise to alarm.
In this premise comes the interest of the researcher to know the level of social media
addiction among senior high school students in Sta. Fe National High School. Social media
has brought people closer together than ever, making it one of the best platforms for
reliant on it and sometimes even overuse it in their daily lives. As a result, this study will
attempt to draw conclusions on the extent of social media addiction among students because

Definition of Terms
For a clear presentation of this study, some terms are operationally defined:
Frequency- This refers to the number of times the participants use the social media in a
period of time.
Senior High- This refers to the specific’s students going through the last two years of high
school.
Social Media- This refers to the websites wherein people can receive, send or share
Social Media Addiction- This refers to a high interest on social media which makes it hard to

The first important variable of this study is the student’s background of social media
use. From Facebook to Snapchat to Twitter and beyond, social media and social networks
are becoming an increasingly crucial aspect of how we interact and engage on a daily
basis. They are essential for remaining connected and current, as well as contributing to
our world and being creative. Many students turn for social networking services to help
them grow their personal learning network and find resources. Access to and use of social
media has increased dramatically in recent years. Social media is a new instructional tool
in academia that may be utilized to engage students both within and outside of the
According to Melissa Leiter (2014), students have the most presence on various
platforms. For example, Facebook is a website that allows registered users to establish
profiles, upload photographs and videos, send messages, and stay in touch with friends,
family, and coworkers. Second, users can upload, view, rate, share, add to favorites,
report, comment on videos, and subscribe to other users on YouTube. It has a large
network platform and online photo-sharing application that allows users to edit and
submit photographs and short videos via a smartphone app. Fourth, we go to Pinterest to

be inspired and receive ideas, whether for style, cooking, decor, or words of wisdom for
everyday life. Fifth, while Snapchat was originally designed for private, one-on-one photo
sharing, you can now use it for a variety of functions such as sending short movies, live
video chatting, texting, creating caricature-like Bitmoji avatars, and sharing photographs
and videos. Sixth, users often go to LinkedIn to hunt for jobs and/or network with other
business professionals. Finally, people use Twitter to connect with their personal social
network; it's usually a location where people go to find niche material that interests them.
Local Literature
Today's youthful generations are constantly exposed to various forms of social media.
There is a link between social media and the impact on youth behavior modification. As a
result, another variable in this study is the potential actions of students as a result of their
use of social media. According to Richtel (2010), the allure of modern technologies,
while affecting adults as well, is especially strong for young people. They warn that
developing brains can become more quickly habituated to frequently switching tasks than
adult brains, making them less able to sustain attention. As a result, the students' day-to-
day habits are affected. According to Al-Deen (2012)'s book Social Media: Usage and
Impact, over the last ten years, social media platforms such as Twitter, Facebook,
MySpace, YouTube, Flickr, and others have developed at an exponential rate, enrolling
an astronomical number of users. It also investigates the evolving role and impact of
social media. The authors investigate the use and impact of social media in a variety of
contexts, including educational settings, strategic communication, politics, and legal and
ethical issues.
8
All the preceding literature reviews imply that social media addiction occurs. The
review also indicated that numerous scales for measuring addiction to the Internet and
certain social media platforms, particularly Facebook, exist and have been used in other
studies throughout the world. Also, based on a survey of the literature on social media
addiction, it appears that the phenomena of social media addiction have not been studied
at the university level, thus this study will focus on social media addiction at the
university level. The study focuses on the effects of social media on students, as well as
the social media platforms they use and the motivations for their use.

When performing research, one of the most important parts of the chapter is the
Review of Related Studies. This primarily serves as a framework for the suggested
investigation by the researchers. It also serves as a guide in carrying out the research. It is
necessary for researchers to do research because it gives a framework and more valid
information that supports and carries the value of the researchers' study.
Furthermore, various studies related to the research have been discovered, some of
which are the "Impacts of Social Media Among the Youth on Behavior Change: A Case

of 2015. This study is a qualitative analysis with the primary goal of determining whether
University of Ghana students are hooked to social media and the extent of their addiction.
As a result, the purpose of this study was to look at social media addiction among
university students. The participants are University of Ghana students. This quantitative
study reveals the conclusions of data collected from 200 University of Ghana students to
determine their use of social media and their level of addiction to it. Respondents were
given a 20-item questionnaire, and a 100% response rate was obtained. This method
contains frequency tables and charts, as well as the study's research questions and
objectives. According to the research findings, more than half of the respondents use

respondents use their social media accounts for enjoyment, followed by 22.3% who use
social media to create media material and share opinions, and 20.3% who use social

use it for social gatherings, and around a fourth said they use it to keep in touch. This
study is related to our study in that it focuses on the level of addiction that students have
Hüseyin Bicen (2016) published "The Effects of Social Media on Student Behavior:
Facebook as a Case Study." Social networks are one of the most popular forms of
communication in today's globe. many research investigations have looked into their
application in many fields. This study will look at the effects of social media on student
behaviour, with a concentration on Facebook. The use of Facebook will also be assessed
and social media related behaviors. A broad scanning strategy was utilized to monitor
high school students' attitudes in order to acquire primary data. 362 high school students
used for communication, enjoyment, and the sharing of news, photographs, and songs.
Furthermore, their Facebook profile image is alone, and kids are aware that swearing is a
type of misconduct, which is a good indicator. According to the survey, students were
aware of the importance of protecting their social identity because their Facebook shares
are not public. They also respect privacy by not using their friends' Facebook accounts.
However, studies have shown that excessive use of social media might cause students to
become distracted from their studies. This study is relevant to our research because it
11
All the studies described above demonstrate that social media causes behavioral
changes in pupils. As a result, having these linked studies will be extremely beneficial to
this study, as this study primarily focuses on the amount of social media usage among
students, as well as the previously mentioned related studies. These connected researches
will then supply evidence to our study because they have comparable goals in conducting
them.
Conceptual Framework
Based on the further study will be conducted by the researcher, there are many factors
that influence the level of social media addiction such as personal and environmental factors.
Personal Factors
Control Variable
The conceptual framework suggest that personal factors are important factor that may
influence the level of social media addiction among senior high school students.
Based on the statements of the problem, the following hypothesis was made:
12
1. There is no significant level of social media addiction among senior high school
students.

In this case, the instrument can be reviewed by experts in the field of education to
ensure that it measures what it intends to measure and that the questions are clear and
appropriate for the target population. It can also be administered to a group of senior high
