CHAPTER I

THE PROBLEM AND ITS SETTING

Introduction

The ease with which people can access the internet today has made it one of the most

widely used platforms for communication and information seeking (Ramamohanarao et al.,

2007). However, since the internet is regarded as a very informative and entertaining

medium, people frequently engage in a variety of activities there, some of which have

potential to become addictive. Social media use is one of this activity. (Kuss & Griffiths,

2011)

Social media has spread across the world and is now a vital tool for communication

between friends, families and peers. According to Dearborn (2014), social media is a

communication channel that is very popular, extremely fast, broad, has proven to be highly

effective, and as well as trusted by billions of people to share and discover content

concerning individuals, brands, information, and entertainment. People can easily

communicate with anyone at any time as a result.

Social media introduction in the past ten years has undoubtedly drawn a lot of people,

particularly students. Thus, social media’s widespread appeal may be cause for concern,

particularly given that students are spending an increasing amount of time online, which may

have an impact on their behavior. It is concerning enough that people use these platforms

excessively because it could result in social media addiction. Walker (2011) defines social

media addiction as condition in which a user spends excessive amounts of time on social

media (such as Facebook, Twitter and Instragram), to the point where it adversely affects

other facets of his or her daily life, such as school, work, relationships and interpersonal

behaviors.

3
Additionally, according to the American Psychological Association (2014), addiction

is defined as a “compulsive behavior that leads to negative effects” in which, similar to other

types of addictions like those to drugs, gambling, video games, overeating, etc., people feel

compelled to engage in certain activities to the point where they develop unhealthy habits,

which then interferes with other crucial activities in their lives like other school work and

performance.

On the other side, due to their addiction to social media, students often become

influenced by what they see and experience there. This is a severe issue since it might have a

bad effect on the students’ behavior, which is demonstrated in their school behavior.

It is undeniable that the extent of use of these numerous platforms given rise to alarm.

In this premise comes the interest of the researcher to know the level of social media

addiction among senior high school students in Sta. Fe National High School. Social media

has brought people closer together than ever, making it one of the best platforms for

communication and providing a wide range of entertainment. As a result, students today

reliant on it and sometimes even overuse it in their daily lives. As a result, this study will

attempt to draw conclusions on the extent of social media addiction among students because

it is a disorder that is increasingly frequent among students in today’s generation.

Statement of the Problem

This study aims to answer the following:

1. What is the level of social media addiction of senior high school students?

2. What is the students background about social media?

3. What is the frequency of usage, type of social networking sites and the purpose for

which the students use of social media?

4
Objectives of the Study

This study aims to:

1. Determine the level of social media addiction of senior high school students at Sta. Fe

National High School.

2. Determine the students background about social media.

3. Determine the frequency of usage, type of social networking sites and the purpose for

which the students use social media.

Significance of the Study

This study is beneficial to the following:

Students. This study will give awareness to student about social media addiction.

Moreover, they can be enlightened and may be practice social media in a responsible way.

Parents. This study will help the parents understand why children are using social media.

Through this study, they can formulate some preventive measure to help their children not to

use social media frequently.

Future Researchers. This study may benefit future researchers since this will serve as

blueprint for their future researches. Also, it gives them the necessary recommendations in

improving their study from the information and data being gathered by this research.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

The general intent of this study is to know the extent of social media addiction of senior high

school students od Sta. Fe National High School (SFNHS).

5
This study mainly identifies and access the students background about social media and the

purpose for which the students use it. And also, this study yearns to identify the frequency of

usage and the type of social networking sites they use.

This study limits it coverage on the grade 11 and grade 12 students only who uses social

media. Each of the participants are given same questionnaires to answer. This study lasted for

four months, on the second semester February to June, school year 2022- 2023.

Definition of Terms

For a clear presentation of this study, some terms are operationally defined:

Frequency- This refers to the number of times the participants use the social media in a

period of time.

Senior High- This refers to the specific’s students going through the last two years of high

school.

Social Media- This refers to the websites wherein people can receive, send or share

information and communicate with various people.

Social Media Addiction- This refers to a high interest on social media which makes it hard to

prevent from using it.

CHAPTER II

REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE AND STUDIES

Related Literature

 Foreign Literature

The first important variable of this study is the student’s background of social media

use. From Facebook to Snapchat to Twitter and beyond, social media and social networks

are becoming an increasingly crucial aspect of how we interact and engage on a daily

basis. They are essential for remaining connected and current, as well as contributing to

our world and being creative. Many students turn for social networking services to help

them grow their personal learning network and find resources. Access to and use of social

media has increased dramatically in recent years. Social media is a new instructional tool

in academia that may be utilized to engage students both within and outside of the

economics classroom, influencing their overall achievement (Al-Bahrani et al., 2015).

According to Melissa Leiter (2014), students have the most presence on various

platforms. For example, Facebook is a website that allows registered users to establish

profiles, upload photographs and videos, send messages, and stay in touch with friends,

family, and coworkers. Second, users can upload, view, rate, share, add to favorites,

report, comment on videos, and subscribe to other users on YouTube. It has a large

selection of user-generated and corporate media videos. Third, Instagram is a social

network platform and online photo-sharing application that allows users to edit and

submit photographs and short videos via a smartphone app. Fourth, we go to Pinterest to

7
be inspired and receive ideas, whether for style, cooking, decor, or words of wisdom for

everyday life. Fifth, while Snapchat was originally designed for private, one-on-one photo

sharing, you can now use it for a variety of functions such as sending short movies, live

video chatting, texting, creating caricature-like Bitmoji avatars, and sharing photographs

and videos. Sixth, users often go to LinkedIn to hunt for jobs and/or network with other

business professionals. Finally, people use Twitter to connect with their personal social

network; it's usually a location where people go to find niche material that interests them.

 Local Literature

Today's youthful generations are constantly exposed to various forms of social media.

There is a link between social media and the impact on youth behavior modification. As a

result, another variable in this study is the potential actions of students as a result of their

use of social media. According to Richtel (2010), the allure of modern technologies,

while affecting adults as well, is especially strong for young people. They warn that

developing brains can become more quickly habituated to frequently switching tasks than

adult brains, making them less able to sustain attention. As a result, the students' day-to-

day habits are affected. According to Al-Deen (2012)'s book Social Media: Usage and

Impact, over the last ten years, social media platforms such as Twitter, Facebook,

MySpace, YouTube, Flickr, and others have developed at an exponential rate, enrolling

an astronomical number of users. It also investigates the evolving role and impact of

social media. The authors investigate the use and impact of social media in a variety of

contexts, including educational settings, strategic communication, politics, and legal and

ethical issues.

8
All the preceding literature reviews imply that social media addiction occurs. The

review also indicated that numerous scales for measuring addiction to the Internet and

certain social media platforms, particularly Facebook, exist and have been used in other

studies throughout the world. Also, based on a survey of the literature on social media

addiction, it appears that the phenomena of social media addiction have not been studied

at the university level, thus this study will focus on social media addiction at the

university level. The study focuses on the effects of social media on students, as well as

the social media platforms they use and the motivations for their use.

Related Studies

 Foreign Studies

When performing research, one of the most important parts of the chapter is the

Review of Related Studies. This primarily serves as a framework for the suggested

investigation by the researchers. It also serves as a guide in carrying out the research. It is

necessary for researchers to do research because it gives a framework and more valid

information that supports and carries the value of the researchers' study.

Furthermore, various studies related to the research have been discovered, some of

which are the "Impacts of Social Media Among the Youth on Behavior Change: A Case

Study of University Students in Selected Universities in Nairobi, Kenya", "Social Media

Addiction among Students of the University of Ghana", and "The effects of Social Media

on Student's Behavior; Facebook as a Case Study". These investigations are thought to be

useful as the researchers continue their research.

Rita Njoroge (2013) published "Impacts of Social Media Among the Youth on

Behavior Change: A Case Study of University Students in Selected Universities in

Nairobi, Kenya" in 2013. This study aims to investigate the influence and implications of

9
social media on Kenyan youth, particularly those in universities, and the ramifications of

such use on their behavior. This study includes 80 individuals from four different

universities in Nairobi, Kenya. Furthermore, this study employs the qualitative research

approach, with descriptive survey questionnaires being completed by a total of 20

students from each university chosen. This study included reasonable protections based

on ethical considerations and regulations. As a result, the information obtained by the

researcher throughout the course of this study was kept confidential and used solely for

academic purposes. According to the survey, Kenyan youth use social media extensively,

primarily through the Facebook, Whatsapp, and Twitter apps. It was also discovered that

no parental control existed. Furthermore, it rendered the kids sluggish, and the majority of

them acknowledged to wasting time that could have been spent doing better things like

reading. This study is related to our study since they both seek to learn about the effects

of social media addiction on student behavior.

Another study is "'Social Media Addiction among Students of the University of

Ghana," which was conducted by AkuaAdoasi Out and released in the month of October

of 2015. This study is a qualitative analysis with the primary goal of determining whether

University of Ghana students are hooked to social media and the extent of their addiction.

As a result, the purpose of this study was to look at social media addiction among

university students. The participants are University of Ghana students. This quantitative

study reveals the conclusions of data collected from 200 University of Ghana students to

determine their use of social media and their level of addiction to it. Respondents were

given a 20-item questionnaire, and a 100% response rate was obtained. This method

contains frequency tables and charts, as well as the study's research questions and

objectives. According to the research findings, more than half of the respondents use

WhatsApp on a regular basis, followed by Facebook, which is used by more than a

10
quarter of the respondents on a regular basis. According to the findings, the majority of

respondents use their social media accounts for enjoyment, followed by 22.3% who use

social media to create media material and share opinions, and 20.3% who use social

media to meet new people. A little more than half of the 200 respondents indicated they

use it for social gatherings, and around a fourth said they use it to keep in touch. This

study is related to our study in that it focuses on the level of addiction that students have

to Social Media across all platforms.

Hüseyin Bicen (2016) published "The Effects of Social Media on Student Behavior:

Facebook as a Case Study." Social networks are one of the most popular forms of

communication in today's globe. many research investigations have looked into their

application in many fields. This study will look at the effects of social media on student

behaviour, with a concentration on Facebook. The use of Facebook will also be assessed

to see if there is a beneficial association between confidence, social media engagement,

and social media related behaviors. A broad scanning strategy was utilized to monitor

high school students' attitudes in order to acquire primary data. 362 high school students

from grades 9 to 12 were chosen as participants. According to the findings, Facebook is

used for communication, enjoyment, and the sharing of news, photographs, and songs.

Furthermore, their Facebook profile image is alone, and kids are aware that swearing is a

type of misconduct, which is a good indicator. According to the survey, students were

aware of the importance of protecting their social identity because their Facebook shares

are not public. They also respect privacy by not using their friends' Facebook accounts.

However, studies have shown that excessive use of social media might cause students to

become distracted from their studies. This study is relevant to our research because it

discusses social media and its impact on student conduct.

11
All the studies described above demonstrate that social media causes behavioral

changes in pupils. As a result, having these linked studies will be extremely beneficial to

this study, as this study primarily focuses on the amount of social media usage among

students, as well as the previously mentioned related studies. These connected researches

will then supply evidence to our study because they have comparable goals in conducting

them.

Conceptual Framework

Based on the further study will be conducted by the researcher, there are many factors

that influence the level of social media addiction such as personal and environmental factors.

This study is engendered with deep understanding of the following relationships

which are strengthened by the literature.

The figure shows the independent, dependent and control variable.

Independent variable Dependent Variable

Personal Factors
Control Variable

The conceptual framework suggest that personal factors are important factor that may

influence the level of social media addiction among senior high school students.

Hypothesis of the Study

Based on the statements of the problem, the following hypothesis was made:
12
1. There is no significant level of social media addiction among senior high school

students.

2. Senior high school students have no background about social media.

3. Senior high school students don’t use social media.

CHAPTER III

METHODOLOGY

Research Method

The research design for this study can be a descriptive research design. This type of

research design is used to describe the characteristics of a phenomenon or situation. In this

case, the research design will be used to describe the level of social media addiction among

senior high school students.

The limitations of the study will be acknowledged, such as possibility of response bias

and the limited generalizability of the findings.

The findings of the study will be concluded and discussed in relation to the existing

literature on social media addiction among young adults. Recommendations for future

research and intervention will also be provided.

Population and Sampling Scheme

To conduct a study on the level of social media addiction among senior high school

students, a random sampling technique could be used. This would involve selecting a

representative sample of students from the population.

The first thing to do in order to select the sample is to determine the sample size based

on statistical power and margin of error requirements. Then obtain a list of all senior high
13
schools in the chosen school. Randomly select a few students from the list. Administer the

survey to the selected students.

This sampling scheme would ensure that the sample is representative of the

population and would provide accurate results for the study.

Description of the Respondents

The respondents of the study are the selected senior high school students of Sta. Fe

National High School. The researcher considers them as one who has enough knowledge to

answer the problem posed in the study and can answer the questions that supplies the

information needed in the study.

Research Instruments

The research instrument use to gather data about the level of social media addiction

among senior high school students is questionnaire that was drawn out from previous

research studies and for it is proven to be much more effective on the type of research have.

The researcher also uses this type of data gathering method for it is known to be less bias and

least expensive way of collecting data. It also encourages the respondents to be more

cooperative due to the fact that it is much more comfortable to respond and much open to

options but still related and specific much open to options but still related and specific to the

type of research that the researcher is conducting.

Validation of Instruments

Healy & Perry (2000), explain that validity determines whether the research truly

measures that which it was intended to measure or how truthful the research results are. It

14
estimates how accurately the data obtained in the study represents a given variable or

construct in the study (Mugenda, 2008).

In this case, the instrument can be reviewed by experts in the field of education to

ensure that it measures what it intends to measure and that the questions are clear and

appropriate for the target population. It can also be administered to a group of senior high

school students along with other measures of social media addiction to determine the validity.

This can be done through content validity, where the question is compared to existing

research on social media addiction, or through construct validity, where the responses to the

questions are compared to other measures of social media addiction.

Data Gathering Procedure

Permission to conduct the study will be secured by the Inquiries, Investigation and

Immersion adviser and principal of Sta. Fe National High School. After which, the researcher

will go to the school to personally distribute the questionnaire will be scored, tailed and

tabulated.

Statistical Treatment of Data

The data gathered will be tailed and will be analyze and interpreted using descriptive

statistics. This method involves summarizing and describing the data using measures such as

mean, median, mode, range, standard deviation and frequency distribution. This can provide

a general overview of the level of social media addiction among senior high school students

at Sta. Fe National High School.
