(DRAFT) Effects of Social Media Addiction on HUMSS Senior High Students' Academic Performance at

Lipata National High School S.Y. 2022-2023

Background of the study

As time progresses bringing in new features, we now live in a technology-dominant world.

No doubt that technology has brought numerous advantages to senior high school students.
However, it has come to an awareness of the rising addiction rates of social media. With the
continuous growth of social media, senior high school students now adopt an addicting behavior.

Here at Lipata National High School, the use of social media continues to grow because of
international influences. Students find social media entertaining as well as useful to their
academic learning. As this provides flexibility in learning and stimulates innovative ideas, and
increases interpersonal relationships among students, these tools, however, can have negative
impacts on students.

Ito, et al. (2009), teens use these technologies for several positive activities, which include
delving deeper into interest-driven communities and participating in various activities. Interest-
driven refers to the ways that people pursue their interests, hobbies, and passions. There's no
denying that social media helps students in both their personal and academic lives in a variety of
beneficial and positive ways. On the other hand, negative effects cannot be ignored.

Several studies have been conducted to find out the impact of social media on the academic
performance of students. Conversely, Banquil et. al. (2009), found a continuing drop in grades among
students who use social networking sites. Internet users choose activities online that satisfy their
needs like “entertainment, information, and social interaction.” (Ruggerio, 2009). Kirschner and
Karpinski (2010), found a significant negative relationship between social media specifically Facebook
use, and academic performance. They concluded that students who use Facebook spend a few hours
per week studying on average than Facebook nonusers and this resulted in a lower mean grade point
average (GPA). Given the data from these studies, it is possible to conclude that social media use and
students' academic performance are not positively correlated. There is a connection between the
usage of social media and getting lesser time to study which can lead to students receiving lower
grades.

A considerable amount of research has already been conducted regarding social media addiction among
students in different countries around the world, which has cut across all facets of society with its
positive and negative impacts. This is why it is very significant for students to better understand and be
responsible enough to use social media sites. However, no research focuses and entails on the effect of
social media addiction on academic performance. This is the reason why the researchers decided to do
this study. This paper aims to seek the effect of social media addiction on the academic performance of
senior high school students at Lipata National High School.
