CHAPTER I

THE PROBLEM AND ITS SCOPE

INTRODUCTION

Rationale of the Study

Social media is computer-based technology that facilitates the sharing of ideas,

thoughts and information through the building of virtual networks and communities. By
design, it is internet based and gives users a quick electronic communication of content.
The content includes personal information, documents, videos and photos. Social media
is originated as a way to interact with their friends and families and later adopted by
business which wanted to take advantage of a popular new communication method to
reach out to their customers. Even governments and politicians use social media to
engage with constituents and voters. As for individuals, it is used to connect with their
friends and families, (Dollarhide, 2019).

Users that are engage in social media use computers, tablets or smart phones
via web-based software or web application often for messages and video calls. The
common users of social media are teenagers, teachers, students, high salary workers,
professionals, celebrities and businessmen to communicate and interact nationally and
globally. It is advantage for the businessmen because through social media they can
easily reach their customers. Some of the users utilize various social media applications
for networks career opportunities, find people across the globe with the same interest
and share their thoughts, insights and emotions.

Furthermore, Twitter, Facebook, Snapchat and Instagram are all high used as
social media platforms. The usage of social media for high school students have
potentials to affect their grades, social and time management skills, it could be a
positive or negative impacts to them (Harrison,2018). Multitasking in class have been
seen to detrimental values on academic performance. Students tend to check their
social media while studying or while in the class. This leads to a reduced focus on class
activities. The frequent use of social media by the students take of time that would have
been use to study and to take part in their educational activities. Multitasking is one of
the causes of the lost of concentration in class. This leads to the reduction of focus on
various activities. The mental and physical health of users are significantly affected by
social media. This is mostly through exhaustion of keeping of with the social
requirements of the sites. The energy used in the sites exploits the energy treat would
have been used in academics. The absence of social media would develop human
interaction processes and more improve class performance.

San Miguel National High School is a school wherein a lot of students are
involved in using different kinds of social media platforms. This study is conducted to
determine the significant effects of social media towards the students academic
performance.

Conceptual Theoretical Background

According to Nicole, (2007), students have recognized that social media are used
to communicate their peers, share information, reinvent their personal status and
showcase their social lives. The number of people using social media have often
experienced poor academic performance and brought an impact on their psychological
health. Also Karpinski (2009) states that social media have negative effect on students
academic performance. It was also highlighted that users on social media were usually
devoted to their studies compared to non-users who were subsequently got lower
greatest point average (GPA). It was also mentioned by Karpinski, and Duberstein
(2009), that among the major distractions of current generation are social media such
as Facebook, Whatsapp, Instagram and etc.

However, Cole et al. (2009), sates that social media can increase student’s
learning through student’s interaction. Challenges arise when social media are
incorporated into an academic course. The assumption that students are familiar with
the use of certain types of social media can cause educators to inadvertently fail to
provide the resources or to support students usage and learning.
According to Hurt et al (2012), social media provides too much stimulation and
therefore can distract students from completing their coursework. Another reason,
maybe students who spend more time on social media may have difficulty balancing
their online activities and their academic preparation

THE PROBLEM

Statement of the Problem

The main goal of the study was to find out the significant effects of social media
in relation to their academic performance of Grade 9 students in San Miguel National
High School.

Specifically, this study sought answers to the following questions:

1.What is the frequency distribution of social media in terms of number of hours used?

2.What is the academic performance of Grade 9 students?

3.Is there any significant relationship of using social media towards the academic
performance?

Statement of the Hypothesis

Based on the above-mentioned questions, the following hypothesis was

formulated.

Ho: There is no significant relationship between social media usage and academic
performance of the students.

Ha: There is significant relationship between social media usage and academic
performance of the students.

Significance of the Study

This study would be beneficial to the following sectors of the educational

institution:
