BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

Social media platforms have experienced widespread adoption across the

globe, with billions of users engaging in various social networking activities. For
many adults, accessing social media has become a normal part of their daily lives
(Park and Lee, 2014). It can also have both positive and negative effects on
attention. On one day, it offers quick access to information and facilities multitasking.
Social media can impact motivation and self-regulation, which are crucial for
academic success.
Thus, social media is one of the worlds top communication channels if not on
the top. Since it became widely used, it has change not only the way people interact
but also the way they lived. Social media connects the real and virtual worlds,
facilitating relationships in a variety of areas, from food and medicine to education
and employment. While opinions on the effects of using electronic media vary,
everyone agrees that in order to succeed academically, pupils need to develop the
study habit and learning techniques. According to NYST(2023), there are 4.8 billion
social media users globally, or 59.9% of the worlds population and 92.7% of all
internet users. According to a research, 93% of young people between the ages of
14 and 22 use social media, mostly regularly (Hopelab, Well Being Trust, 2018). With
an average of 93.8 million active users each month, the average daily use in the
nation was over four hours, which is 60% more than usual (OOSGA, 2023).

In this modern technology, which has paved the path for advancement and
inventions that we use how and keep using and enhancing. Online collaborative
learning and knowledge sharing have become commonplace. Libraries how need to
use social media platforms in order to retain users participation. Student behavior
has change as a result of the widespread and almost impossible to avoid usage of
social media. Interrelate, link up, and socialize it has evolved into a crucial
component of their social and cultural life. Because of this students spend a lot of
time in social media. Their classmates can be reached via social media platforms aid
in enhancing the students academic performance and knowledge. Students access a
variety of websites to gather the knowledge they need to complete their
responsibilities (De La Cruz, 2017). In a study by (Murtaza, 2023), social media has
a variety of effects on learners academic performance. Such being a cause of
difficulties, distraction, comparison, and issues with self-esteem. The study did,
however, offer suggestions for reducing these effects. By promoting responsible use
and importing good time management skills, teachers and parents may help
students establish a balance between their social media usage and their academic
success. In the Philippines, a study by (Chua, Luyun, 2019) said that students
usually use social media as a way for them to express themselves and communicate
with one another. Even if it had positive outcomes, teachers should continue push
students to utilize social media in more useful ways rather than just chatting with
their friends all the time.

On top of that, House Bill No. 3114 mandates that schools of any kind integrate
internet and social media education in their curriculum. This is done to inform the
children on how to use the internet and social media appropriately, the advantages of
responsible use, and the negative results of unauthorized access and use. Various
social media platforms are used for schoolworks and projects. The Department of
Educational (DepEd), however, prohibits students from posting their schoolwork on
social media in order to receive points (Mercado, 2019). In line with this, The
Department of Information and Communication Technology (DICT) issued an aid
memo titled “PROHIBITING THE USE OF SOCIAL MEDIA IN CLASS PROJECTS”
in response to this. The goal of this is to prevent issues with students study habits
and parental dishonesty caused by children who are drawn to social media since
they can simply claim that they are waiting for the teacher to provide their
assignment. It might eventually cause students to do poorly in school.

The study aims to delve into the impacts of social media usage on the academic
performance of students at Burauen Comprehensive National High School, while
also exploring the potential influence of motivation and attentiveness on this
relationship. By examining these variables, the research seeks to provide valuable
insights into how social media engagement can either positively or negatively affect
students' educational outcomes in the specific context of Burauen Comprehensive
National High School. The findings of this study may contribute to the development
of targeted interventions and strategies to optimize students' academic performance
in the digital age.

THEORETICAL FRAMEWORK

This study is supported by the theory of suggesting that are cognitive resources
are limited, and excessive social media use might overload these resources,
affecting attention and motivation. Students who spend more time on social media
might have reduced cognitive capacity for academic tasks. Cognitive Load Theory
(CLT) was primarily developed in the year of 1980 by John Sweller, an Australian
cognitive psychologist. Sweller's work on CLT has had significant impact on the fields
of education, instructional design, and cognitive psychology. His research and
publications have contributed to our understanding of how cognitive load affects
learning and problem-solving, as well as how instructional methods can be optimized
to enhance learning outcomes by managing cognitive load effectively.

In relation to this study, this theory suggests that our cognitive resources are
limited, and excessive social media use might overload these resources, affecting
attention and motivation. Students who spend more time on social media might have
reduced cognitive for academic tasks.

The theoretical framework of social media usage its importance is instrumental in

guiding the design, execution, and interpretation of our study.

REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE AND STUDIES

The Internet has expanded rapidly and shifted from being solely an information
access tool to being an interaction tool used by individuals to discover and share
content, opinions, and information. To develop information connections, individuals
are using a variety of technologies to access content and join virtual communities on
various social networking sites. Of interest to researchers and organizations is the
individuals’ perception of social networking sites using the identified dimensions of
ease‐of‐use, usefulness, information quality, feeling, and usage intention.

The usage patterns based upon the access methods can have an impact on the
usage behavior of social network sites. High‐usage groups have the highest mean
values for the perception dimension of ease‐of‐use for both access method and
social networking sites. This suggests that organizations should accommodate and
energize mobile users and design changes to their social media usage to facilitate
interaction and information sharing. (2011, John Wiley & Sons, Ltd).
