Lie Detection Defense

By Mitchell An Pegarido

On December 17, 2022, the Professional Academy of the Philippines Criminology Department held
a thesis defense on the use of polygraph technology in criminal investigations.

The thesis, written by the fourth-year students, explores the effectiveness of polygraphs in
detecting deception and its impact on the criminal justice system.

The defense panel, comprised of experts in the field, evaluated the thesis and provided insights on
the potential application of polygraph.

The process lasted for several hours and includes a formal presentation, a question-and-answer
session, and a review of the written work.

Intern Chief Col. Christian Latayada and IC Capt. Mary Grace Ansay shared their positive outlook
and preparations made to make their hard work successful. "Aside from being part of the curriculum as a
CHED requirement, its main purpose is to assess the 4th year criminology students' knowledge throughout
the semester as they apply it in the moot court. The essential elements of a successful polygraph thesis
defense include the basic and complex knowledge regarding the subject matter and the cooperation and
participation among the groupmates in conducting the polygraph examination" Latayada said.

As for their preparation Ms. Ansay statement is "there are three components that made our
polygraph thesis defense successful. First is the complete knowledge of the polygraph instrument, the
process of the examination, and the case to be examined. With that technical knowledge, we did
understand the 5W's and 1H the panels had formulated. Second is the preparation. Before and after the
polygraph examination, we noted all details and questions that we get so that we can evaluate the
weaknesses and strengths of our examination. In this way, we are prepared on the possible questions the
panel will ask. Lastly, the unity of our group. Before the final defense, we had this recollection that
strengthen our goals. During the presentation, some of the members were struggling from answering the
