INTRODUCTION

BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

TikTok, which is accessible on mobile phones, permits users to produce short video
clips, lip-sync, dance, gaming, DIY, cooking films, etc., in three (3) to sixty (60) seconds. In
addition to creating videos, users participate in TikTok by watching, sharing, and
commenting on other users' video creations. Memes, user engagement, and other phenomena
like remixing and reinterpreting songs, plotlines, catchphrases, and other formulaic aspects
were frequently employed to represent users' opinions and cultures, much to how memes are
utilized now (Yang Y., 2020).

Confidence is the conviction that given the situation, one can carry out a task
effectively. Because of the strong relationship between how one feels about himself and his
social media usage, how people view themselves is an important issue. The TikTok app can
help boost self-confidence by allowing users to create and upload videos on a regular basis,
allowing them to receive feedback from others as viewers. Users of the TikTok app can freely
express themselves, test their creativity, and present themselves to overcome humiliation and
boost self-confidence (Amoda M.A.A, et al., 2022).

TikTok users frequently complain about the platform's unmatched ability to distract,
entertain, and engage users through its advanced recommendation technology (TechCrunch,
2022). This may be true, but for other people, it can also be a form of self-expression. Aside
from that, the TikTok application provides an excellent opportunity for its users to become
creators and encourage sharing of creative expression and content via short videos (Deriyanto
& Qorib, 2018).

Not long ago, Lizzie Velasquez, a motivational speaker, was devastated when she found
out that her photos were going viral on TikTok as part of the "New Teacher Challenge." The
"teacher's" picture is typically a mugshot or an image of someone making a stupid face,
although occasionally, those images are of Velasquez or individuals with disabilities. Adults
who participate in the trend pretend to FaceTime
Arellano University – Elisa Esguerra Campus

their child's "new teacher." The typical response of the child is one of shock or terror.
Velasquez added that when a parent laughs, the child picks up on the fact that it's okay to
laugh at other people (CNN, 2020).

Moreover, social media is where users can easily participate, share, and create content
to the point where it affects their life, particularly among teenagers who use the internet to
show and seek popularity and public attention. Building students' self-confidence improves
their ability to express themselves freely and their willingness to participate in school
activities and competitions. Therefore, the researchers would like to determine whether the
Tiktok application impacts HUMMS students' self-confidence to give information about the
effect of using the Tiktok app.

SCOPE AND DELIMITATION

This research is entitled "Tiktok App: Building Self-Confidence." The general intent of
this study is to know how the TikTok app will be able to help students to encourage
themselves and boost their confidence. This study is conducted in Arellano University - Elisa
Esguerra Campus. This is limited to the Grade 12 students Cluster 1 S.Y 2022-2023, under
Humanities and Social Sciences. This study aims to know how the TikTok app will be helpful
to the respondents to be more confident.

SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY

This study's concept would be an outstanding contribution to the perception of the

society of the TikTok application. Hence, this project's vital results could be beneficial, and it
will serve as a guide precisely to the following:

To the Economy: There are countless ways that TikTok has an economic impact. First,
having a social media presence and platform has now become a full-time job for some youth
and young adults and it helps to participate and encourage them to take content-making as a
career path. TikTok has also been a huge help for small business owners because, through
Arellano University – Elisa Esguerra Campus
Senior High School Department
Research Project
S.Y. 2022-2023
TikTok, they can easily advertise their products for free by uploading fun and amusing
content.

To Society: A lot of people in our society experience anxiety due to the pandemic because
they lost their jobs, businesses, and loved ones so they find a way to release their stress and
TikTok helps them with it. Aside from that TikTok also helps people to have a healthy
lifestyle because it encourages humans to move their bodies.

To the Retail Store Owners: A global research study finds TikTok Is a key part of
Consumers' path to purchase, where they are increasingly discovering and buying new
products. TikTok users can engage with others through their unique content and show their
talent so that the purchaser is persuaded to buy from the retailer and it helps out to increase
the numbers of the retailer.

To the Students: A lot of students experience anxiety, and depression because of the new
normal of education, but because of the new social media platform now called TikTok,
students gain more confidence while using the TikTok app and they can release their different
talent and many students are helped by this social media platform not only in learning but
also in their mental health and they can express their feelings more using these social media
platforms.

To the Future Researchers: Tiktok app will give some information or ideas about something
you may use to do a research study or paper. It will serve as your reference to do effective
research.

STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM

This study, entitled "Tiktok App: Building Confidence and Self-Esteem," is all about
determining how the Tiktok App will help a student boost their self-confidence and also
prove if this TikTok App will be able to help students build their self-esteem. In addition,
they will have to answer the following questions:

1. What is the profile of the respondents in terms of:

1.1 Name (optional)
1.2 Age
1.3 Gender
1.4 Grade and Strand

2. How does Tiktok affect the students’ confidence in terms of:

2.1 Physical Appearance
2.2 Social Skills

3. Does Tiktok help in building the self-confidence of the respondents?

METHODOLOGY

The study used a descriptive research design and survey questionnaires as

data-gathering instruments to assess the underlying effect of TikTok in building
self-confidence among Grade 12 students under Humanities and Social Science students in
Arellano University Elisa Esguerra Campus.

RESEARCH METHODOLOGY
Descriptive research seeks to accurately and methodically describe a population,
situation, or phenomenon. It can answer what, where, when, and how questions, but not why
questions (McCombes, 2022). It identifies and describes the nature and frequency of activity
by numerical data. Some examples of questions that can be answered by descriptive research
are the following: What is the average reading ability of 5-year-olds when they first enter
kindergarten? What kinds of math activities are used in early childhood programs? When do
children first receive regular child care from someone other than their parents? Descriptive
research can examine the relationship between two or more variables, but it can’t answer
questions about why a certain phenomenon occurs and what causes it.

DATA GATHERING PROCEDURE

The researchers used survey questionnaires to determine the significance of the TikTok
application on the confidence of Grade 12 students in Cluster 1, under Humanities and Social
Sciences. The questionnaire will be designed to measure the level of confidence before and
after using TikTok and other factors that may influence confidence levels such as age, gender,
and frequency of app usage. The questionnaire will use closed-ended questions that allow
respondents to select from a predefined set of responses. The researchers will distribute the
survey questionnaires via Google Forms to the presidents of each section and distribute them
to their fellow classmates. Once the questionnaire has been answered, the researcher will
collect the questionnaires containing the data needed. Since the research is quantitative,
purposive sampling was used to select participants based on specific criteria and target the
population of interest.

Senior High School Department
Research Project
S.Y. 2022-2023
SAMPLING PROCEDURE
Purposive sampling was used which allowed the researchers to focus on particular
experiences and behaviors of the selected participants, leading to more accurate conclusions.
The chosen respondents should be TikTok users that are aware of how the app affects their
confidence in terms of physical appearance and social skills.

RESEARCH INSTRUMENTS OR TOOLS

The researchers will use a survey questionnaire which is a method of collecting data
through an instrument that contains a series of questions aligned with the statement of the
problem along with a 5-point Likert scale to know the degree to which respondents agree to
the research statements on the questionnaire. Because Likert Scale questions use a scale,
people are not forced to express an either-or opinion, but rather have the option of remaining
neutral. And once all responses have been received, it is very easy to analyze them (smart
survey, 2023).

STATISTICAL TREATMENT OF DATA

The information gathered from the online survey was arranged and statistically
evaluated. To interpret the data effectively, the researchers measured the degree to which
students strongly agree, agree, disagree, and strongly disagree with the research statements
that the researchers provided.

RESULTS AND DISCUSSIONS

PRESENTATION OF DATA

This section of the research paper presents the findings, analysis, and interpretation of
the gathered data from the survey whose main objective is to determine whether the students
in Arellano University Elisa Esguerra Campus find the TikTok application helpful to develop
and enhance their self-confidence.

The study has (71) seventy one respondents in total. The demographic section asked the
respondents their age, gender, and the amount of time they spend on TikTok. The respondents
were also given 2 sections of likert questionnaire with 5 statements per section which has 4
points indicators for scaling.

Table 1.3 represents the frequency of the respondents according to the amount of time
they spend on TikTok. The data shows that most of the population spends 2 hours or more on
the TikTok application, which 22 of the respondents answered with a total population of 31%.
The amount of time students spend on TikTok is significant to identify whether the
application helps them build self-confidence or not because the longer they spend time on
using the application, they consume more content and information from it.

CONCLUSION

It's interesting to see that TikTok has a big impact on the HUMSS students of Arellano
University - Elisa Esguerra Campus, particularly among the female respondents. TikTok has
become a popular platform for self-expression, creativity, and entertainment.

It's great to know that TikTok is helping the respondents build their confidence, find their
talents, and improve their social skills. Social media platforms like TikTok can be powerful
tools for personal development and self-expression.

However, it's also important to note that social media platforms can have both positive and
negative effects on individuals. It's important to use social media in moderation and be
mindful of the content that we consume and create. TikTok can be a fun and creative
platform, but it's also important to be aware of the potential risks and to use the app
responsibly.

We've gathered 71 respondents in total and most of them are Females. 46 Female
Respondents and 25 Male Respondents from HUMSS students of Arellano University - Elisa
Esguerra Campus. We can clearly see that Females are more active on TikTok than Males.
And as a result, we can see that tiktok has a big impact on them and that it makes them
develop their confidence, find out their talents, and improve their social skills by the use of
Tiktok.

RECOMMENDATION

The research paper concludes, including its study and responses from the respondents, that
“TikTok” , a type of social media application, improves their confidence or self-esteem
towards their appearances and social ability. In that case, engaging in an online community is
not a threat to young kids who use it for boosting their confidence.

Based on the results of the study, the recommendation of the researchers for the
parents/guardians, teachers, future researches, and the school administration are:

For the parents/guardians:

- Parents and guardians should supervise them and if possible limit them to too much
engagement in social media that can make or break their confidence in just one click.
- Guidance and supervision from parents is much needed to secure a young kid's mental
state like their confidence.
Arellano University – Elisa Esguerra Campus
Senior High School Department
Research Project
S.Y. 2022-2023
For the teachers:

- Develop your students to be more humane to fellow humans and teach them to have a
proper attitude not only in real life but in the world of online communities. It's
important to guide your students to give proper responses to “bad criticism” or how
they can make it through it.

For the respondents:

- The researchers recommended that they should be mindful for their content while
using TikTok and consider the impact of their posts that may have on others. Avoid
engaging in cyberbullying, body shaming, or spreading negativity. Instead, focus on
creating content that encourages self-acceptance, motivate others, and fosters a sense
of belonging.

For the Arellano University Administration:

- The researchers recommend that the Administrators of Arellano University should

actively encourage students who use TikTok to create and share content that is
positive, uplifting, and supportive. This can include content that promotes self-love
and body positivity, as well as content that shares inspiring stories or quotes that
encourage self-confidence. By creating a culture of positivity and support,
administrators can help users build their self-esteem and feel more confident about
themselves.
