ABSTRACT
This study's primary goal was to examine the individual, family, and school factors' effects on
absenteeism among students in Bangan Oda National High School. The study is quantitative and
was created using the survey questionnaire. Data for this study was collected via a survey of 120
students from the 7th – 12th grades, selected with simple random sampling from secondary school
of Bangan Oda. The data collection instrument consisted of three research questions namely; 1)
what are the factors that cause absenteeism among secondary school students of Bangan Oda
National High School? 2) What school problems can consider as a cause of absenteeism? 3) Do
parents, students, instructors, and administrators have significantly different perspectives on the
causes of absenteeism? The mean average of the given sub questions is calculated using the
percentage frequency distribution. There are several options for each sub-question, including
strongly agree with the equivalent of 5, agree with 4, disagree with 3, and strongly disagree with 2.
The sum is proportionally divided by the total number of respondents. The determined factors
causing absenteeism were household chores, bullying, financial issues, a lack of friends, online
games, an excessive amount of homework, being far from school, communication issues, school
activities, school policies, boring or challenging coursework, and distance from school. The problem
leads for being absent were cleanliness, student’s disagreement, school organization and lack of
ventilation. The perspective identified are cause by family problem, bully classmate, terror teacher,
unsupportive relatives, peer influence and strict administrators.

Chapter 1
THE PROBLEM

Rationale

Absenteeism now a days could not be separated from the individuals who had called
themselves as students. This absence phenomenon was plain to discern, almost as if it was
gave the nature of the learner. Therefore, it’s expected that this behavior was still prevalent
among schoolchildren, including those in elementary and secondary education as well as those
who attend universities (Ambalan, 2014) Youth with school attendance issues (SAPs) showed a
decreased academic efficacy, worsening academic performances, higher levels of anxiety,
higher levels of depressive symptoms, and lower levels of self-esteem. (Gil Keppens, 2019). The
absenteeism which was determined to have adverse effects on the students through the
researchers carried out was an element which affects academic success. Academic success
refers to all behavior changes in all fields of the programs which were other than the
psychomotor and affective development of an individual. (AlyÕldÕz, 2010). Due to resource or
other limitations, a sizable proportion of students did not fully participate in remote learned
possibilities. How much the epidemic affected students' academic and social-emotional growth
was a crucial topic for schools across the country. In order to estimate the pandemic's impact,
this study examined the effects of absenteeism on student which used administrative panel data
from California. Our findings imply that absence in mathematics was often more detrimental to
student outcomes than in ELA. In middle school, negative impacts were more pronounced.
Absences had a severe impact on social and emotional growth, especially in middle school
(Santibañez & Guarino, 2021) .

In addition, school absenteeism was frequently a part of a larger pattern of antisocial

behavior; kids with attendance issues were more likely to steal, engage in vandalism, and
engage in activities that endanger their health. These particular issues may then strengthen
long-term sap and create a vicious cycle that eventually raises the likelihood of dropping out of
school early and later finding worked. (Gil Keppens, 2019)

University Silangor (UNISEL) at Shala Alam in Malaysia also faces the same issue, the
absence of the student getting worse. According to Marburger, 2001, it might have been
challenging to determine how much absence affects performance because one missing student
may lose the chance to master new skills. The Department of Education (DepEd) had an
average of 28 million of enrollees both from government and private schools while during
pandemic, the number of enrollees decrease to 25 million. Also, the recent survey of the

4|Page
Department of Education in the Philippines indicated that one out of ten children was considered
a constant absentee in school. The rate of student absences was 4. 5%, quite high and
increasing, and was highly observable in middle schools. (Conel E. , 2022).

Additionally, the Philippine Institute for Development Studies (PIDS) survey revealed
that the numbers of dropouts had increased. Compared to girls, guys are more likely to hang
around at school. In 2017, over 65% of males between the ages of 5 and 17 were categorized as
out-of-school youth (OOSC). Similarly, the percentage of males who are not in school peaked at
8% vs. the 3% rate of out-of-school girls at the lower secondary level for the age group.12 to 15
years of age. (Conel E. , 2022)

Therefore, Bangan Oda National High School feel the same problem. As such, the
researchers shall take responsibility to investigate and find a factor that causes absenteeism
among students. And also, to know if there in any significant difference in the perspective of
parents, students, teachers, and heads in the factors of absenteeism.

Theoretical Framework

Based on the ideas of Steer and Rhodes (1978), demographic factors like personal and
family-related traits are listed, along with psychological factors like work attendance, incentive to
skip work, and job happiness. The examples stress that the organization's policies have a
significant impact on attendance, so absence of employee attitudes, values, and aspirations, as
well as school culture.

Galichon and Friedman (1985), boredom in classes, outside job, distaste for the
lecturer, thinking the class was useless for their future professions, and pleasant weather were
major contributing reasons in students' decisions to skip courses.

According to the American Heritage dictionary (2000), absenteeism is described as the

frequency of recurring absences from work or the persistent failure to show up in most situations
for regular obligations assigned to them.

Fitzpatrick and Huczynski (1989), holidays and other planned leaves are excluded from
the definition of absenteeism, which is defined as failure to show up for work when required to do
so.

Conceptual Framework

DepEd Order No. 18 s.1991 – Policy on Absenteeism and Tardiness. This order was
published in 1991. The researcher created a draft in order to compile the views and advice of the
participating subject teachers. The experts' opinions were then confirmed after that. The
researcher asked the principal for his or her approval before beginning the study. (Peña, 2019).

Anything relating to the school's attendance policies and practices or tardiness

regulations is referred to as an absence policy. Absenteeism policies are any workplace
regulations that specify paid time off, holidays, sick days, parental or other leaves, etc. The
absenteeism policy also outlines what to do if a worker misses too many days of work in excess
of what is permitted. The finest attendance policy will motivate staff to cut down on absences
while still being fair and taking into consideration the realities of illness, vacations, medical visits,
and other events. (Glossary of Human Resources Management and Employee Benefit Terms,
2022)

Our legal foundation is the Policy on Absenteeism and Tardiness published in 1991,
and as our study's subject is "Factor Causing Absenteeism among the Students in Bangan Oda
National High School," this legal basis is applicable.

Assumption

The study was a descriptive method that utilizes two surveys on the topic of
absenteeism as the methodology. One surveyed was a student surveyed on the factors of
absenteeism. The other was geared toward the effects on student absenteeism. There was no
hypothesis as such in this study. We also cited that this study would help the students of Bangan
Oda National High School to avoid absenteeism. In addition, teachers would also be aware of
absenteeism and its effect.

Statement of the problem

The goal of this study was to find out factors causing absenteeism among the students of
Bangan Oda National High School.

1. What are the factors that cause absenteeism among secondary school students?
2. What school problems can consider as a cause of absenteeism?
3. Do parents, students, instructors, and administrators have significantly different
perspectives on the causes of absenteeism?

Scope and Delimitation

This study was aimed to determine the factors causing absenteeism among the students in
Bangan Oda National High School. It includes 120 students from junior high school and senior
high school in Bangan Oda National High School. Moreover, a descriptive design was employed
with the help of simple random sampling. The respondents answered 23 sub questions that
answer the 3 main research questions.

8|Page
Significance of the Study
The following were some aspects why this study was so valuable.
School Administrators: The researcher's conclusions may help them when formulating an
action plan to address the student's circumstance.
Student: The findings of the studied would assist them reduce absenteeism.
Parents: Parents would benefit from this study since it would provide them with knowledge on
the reasons for their child's daily absences.
Future Researchers: Future research could be used from the findings of this study as data
sources.

Definition of Terms

The following terms have been operationally defined;

Researcher - students of Bangan Oda National High School are the researchers that conducted
this study to learn about the factors of absenteeism.

Students - In OECD's PISA, any person taking part in educational services covered by the data
collection is referred to as a student. The term "student enrollment" refers to the total number of
people (head count) who are registered during the reference period but are actually enrolled as
students. Each enrolled student is only counted once.

Absenteeism - according to Gary (2007), generally describes a circumstance in which person

neglects to perform one or more of his or her regularly planned daily obligations.

Research Instruments

This study used survey question, document analysis, and interview through printed
questionnaire to collect data that had been relevant in finding the factors of absenteeism. The
researchers relied on this system that the participants responded quickly to the study questions.

Data Collection Method

Step 1. The researchers explained the study’s purpose to the participants once they had been
identified and had agreed to the interview
Step 2. The researchers began the interview after stating the reason for the interview.

Step 3. The researchers asked the participants, and then started collecting data for the study,

with one of the researchers keeping track and writing it down.

Step 4. The researchers collected essential information from the respondents.

Tools for Data Analysis

The various data gathered were subjected to statistical computation for data analysis.

The study employed the percentage frequency distribution that pertains to a graph of
data that shows the number of observations for each data pointed or set of data points as a
percentage. It was a great way to express the relative frequency of surveyed responses and
other information. To make a percentage frequency distribution, starting by determining the
total number of observations have been represented, then counting the total number of
observations within each data pointed or grouping of data points, and finally dividing the total
number of observations by the number of observations within each data pointed or grouping of
data points. The total of all percentages that correspond to each data pointed.

Ethical Considerations

The researchers obtained permission from the principal of Bangan Oda National High
School before collecting data from the respondents. The researchers also informed the advisers
of the responders, as well as the senior high school students, about the information they gained.
Responses were recognized and valued by the researchers since their answers were the main
concern.

It was essential to give credit where it was due to the authors of the literature used in
the studied. It was considered intellectual theft or plagiarism when researchers neglect to
recognize others works that was utilized in their study.

Participants were aware of the purpose of the study, how the findings had been used, if
there were any potential adverse impacts of their participation and who would had access to the
findings. The participants were able to make an informed decision as to whether they would
participate in the study or not. Additional information had also been provided in the event that
the participant became distressed in any way during their participation. Participants had the
option to withdraw at any moment and if they chose to participate the whole time, the
researchers that ensured that any published materials did not contain such identifying
information

CHAPTER 4
SUMMARY, CONCLUSION AND RECOMMENDATION

This chapter presented the summary of the findings, conclusion and the
recommendation offered from the findings of the study.

Summary

The goal of this study was to know the different factors are causing absenteeism
among High School Students. This study employed a quantitative research strategy in order to
address the study’s specific problem.

The following are the findings:

1. Students indicated the causes influencing high school students' absence. Out of the 12
categories that the researchers provided, household chores ranked as the number one cause,
with a mean average value of 3.73. The lowest causes, which both included 3.48 on the mean
average, were boring subject and difficult subject.

2. Researchers also discussed the problems that leads to students being absent, which
respondents considered that the Students Disagreements tends the highest common problem
that contains 3.67 on the mean average.

3. Researchers also found out that parents, students, teachers, and administrators had some
very varied viewpoints on the matter. Bully classmate was found out as the highest factor and it
contain 3.82 on the mean average. School organization was determined as the lowest factor that
cause absenteeism with the value of 3.40 on the mean average.

17 | P a g e
CONCLUSION

1. The determined factors causing absenteeism were household chores, bullying, financial
issues, a lack of friends, online games, an excessive amount of homework, being far from
school, communication issues, school activities, school policies, boring or challenging
coursework, and distance from school.
2. The problem of being absent were cleanliness, student’s disagreement, school
organization and lack of ventilation.
3. The perspective identified are caused by family problem, bully classmate, terror teacher,
unsupportive relatives, peer influence and strict administrators.

RECOMMENDATION

Based on the findings obtained from the study, the following suggestions are made:

1. The parents must know that their children absent themselves because of what chores they
are doing in house.
2. The parents should also know that family problem is one of the biggest causes why their
children do not go to school.
3. The students must know that online games can affect their attendance in school.
4. The relatives or guardians must be supportive to make students more inspired and
motivated.
5. School must make a rule for students bully to avoid bullying nor must students’ conflict and
students be friendly.
6. School must create school policies on bully students.
