Background of the Study

Social media nowadays plays a major role in our society. Growing consistently, it plays a

crucial role in the daily lives of billions of individuals globally. Social media refers the platform

for people to connect, collaborate, and communicate by sharing, producing, and exchanging

information and concepts in virtual groups and networks. This research aims to determine the

degree to which Social Media influences a student’s academic performance. According to

Negussie and Ketema (2014) in Jima University, Ethiopia. The study revealed that the majority

of students utilize their individual laptops and smartphones are utilize to connect to social media

platforms, like Facebook. Many research studies have examined the effects of social media on

academic achievement. Certain research has indicated that the excessive utilization of social

media may have a detrimental impact on academic achievement, whereas other studies have

failed to discover any noteworthy connection between social media usage and academic

performance. Further investigation is necessary to examine the connection between students' use

of social media and their academic achievements. The study also revealed that social media has

positive and negative effects on the academic performance of the students. Researcher

recommended that social media should be used for academic and that students should think first

before they click. A research conducted by Talaue and colleagues (2018) revealed that social

media have both positive and negative effects on student success, emphasizing the need for

responsible usage of social networks among adolescents. Furthermore social media has both

positive and negative aspects. Mental health problems, difficulty concentrating, online

harassment, and many more issues. Thus, it is important to recognize the advantages and

disadvantages of the internet. The negative impact of Social media on academic performance can
be explained by various factors, such as the distraction it creates, reduction in study time, and

potential disruptions to sleep patterns. social media without thinking about the consequences

adults who are enrolled in college, the advantages of social media outweigh the adverse

consequences. Results or outcomes. According to Azizi et al. (2019). Students make extensive

use of social networking sites and apps. They dedicate a significant portion of their daily routine

to engaging with these websites. Research findings indicated that university students belong to

the group that extensively engages with social networking platforms. Social media plays a
significant role in our society, allowing people to connect, collaborate, and communicate through

virtual groups and networks. Research has shown that excessive use of social media can

negatively impact academic performance, while others have found no significant connection.

However, social media can also have positive effects, such as increased creativity, better memory

skills, and improved communication. Research by Negussie and Ketema (2014) in Jima

University, Ethiopia, found that most students use laptops and smartphones to connect to social

media platforms like Facebook. Talaue and colleagues (2018) also highlighted the need for

responsible use of social networks among adolescents. Despite the negative effects, social media

has revolutionized the way we interact and engage with others, making communication faster,

easier, and more accessing.

2.1 Related Literature

To confirm the validity of the present study, different concepts from different authors

were reviewed. This section includes the conceptual literature used by the researchers in order to

analyze ideas relevant to the present studies.

In an age of digital globalization, this study examines how social media has a major

impact on students' academic performance. It looks at the complex collaboration between

challenges and benefits that come with integrating social media into educational settings. As

students surf platforms more frequently, a pertinent issue emerges: the potential for distraction

and misinformation, both of which impede effective learning.

The study emphasizes the importance of addressing privacy concerns associated with

using these platforms, which can lead to data security risks for students. The study also

acknowledges the importance of social media to encourage participation, cooperation and access

to a large amount of education resources. There is clear evidence of the dynamic impact of these

platforms on academic activities, which calls for a thorough examination of their implications.

There were 5.18 billion internet users worldwide in April 2023, accounting for roughly

64.6 percent of the global population, with 4.8 billion, or 59.9 percent of the world's population,

being social media users (Petrosyan, 2023; Sharma & Behl, 2022). In January 2020, there were

over 4.54 billion active internet users, accounting for roughly 59 percent of the global

population, with 3.8 billion active social media users (Adelakun et al., 2020).

According to Kolan and Dzandza (2018), the use of social media sites draws students'

focus away from their studies, negatively impacting their academic life. According to the
descriptive analysis of the paper, approximately half of the students, specifically 50.30%,

devoted over 2 hours of their time to social networking sites. According to the research, a mere

17.5% of students utilize social media platforms for academic endeavors, while a significant

majority of 82.5% engage in activities such as chatting, watching videos, and downloading

pictures on these platforms. Social media is used by people across the world. Obtaining

knowledge from various sources is crucial. It is important for users, especially students, to be

aware of the dangers and cautious when using it.

Research indicates that social media usage among senior high school students might have

both beneficial and detrimental consequences on their academic performance. According to

certain research, using social media can help students focus more intently on their academics and

improve their academic performance. Other research, however, has demonstrated that social

media use might have a detrimental effect on kids' academic achievement. It has been discovered

that using social media can result in addiction, which can have an impact on a student's academic

achievement. Students' academic performance may suffer as a result of social media sites

diverting them from their academic tasks. It is urged that parents and teachers keep an eye on

their children' social media usage in order to reduce the detrimental impacts of social media.

Children should also be advised to use social media platforms for academic objectives.

According to Al-Maatouk et al. (2020) Social media has a significant influence on

students' academic performance accomplishments and the contentment of users. In reality,

evolved and matured on the platform has been shown to render learner progress easier. There are

some exceptional situations where the data shows a positive relationship between Twitter and

Facebook have integrated their platforms has the potential to enhance education. a significant

amount of time studying or acquiring knowledge than work rather than focusing on studying.
According to Andreas Kaplan and Michael Heinlein, social media is an assortment of

online resources and programs that are generally founded on the Web 2.0 ethos and the technical

frameworks that permit the production, distribution, and exchange of user-generated content or

site-generated data. Social media gives everyone, including university students, a platform to

exchange ideas, thoughts, information, and conclusions; converse about the content of

information; and establish connections through social networking. Therefore, people can use

social media to prepare content, have a good idea about sharing information, sending letters,

taking images, or organizing tasks based on teamwork, as well as to build social relationships.

Websites, wikis, photo- or video-sharing websites, and other varied platforms are all considered

kinds of social media. These days, engaging in social networking and digital media sharing is

advantageous in addition to facilitating communication and individual social interactions by

enabling users to establish brands and generate career prospects.

According to Hansen et al. (2017), social media is a collection of online tools and

applications that enable social interaction and communication among users of digital media by

promoting knowledge sharing and, in the end, turning an organization's monologue with its

clients into a dialogue. Based on a specific philosophical philosophy, technological

underpinnings, and functionalities, social media comprises a variety of internet-based tools and

apps.

Numerous researches have looked into how social media affects academic achievement.

While some studies have found no discernible link between social media use and academic

performance, others have suggested that excessive use of social media can have a negative

impact on academic achievement. More research is required to determine how kids' use of social

media affects their academic achievement. Sivakumar (2020) found that "most school students
were interested in using social media positively for their academic purpose. This indicates that

the social media impacts the academic performance of the students," despite public views

regarding the misuse of social media among students in society. For this reason, social media

helps students perform better academically. Social media can be used by educators, students, and

teachers as a teaching and learning tool to facilitate and enhance the learning process."

Due to its tendency to cause distractions and procrastination, social media may have a

detrimental effect on academic achievement. Instead of studying or finishing their projects,

students often lose hours reading through their social media feeds. Social media can also make

students feel pushed to check their accounts frequently, even during class hours, by instilling a

sense of FOMO (Fear of Missing Out). Social media, on the other hand, can also improve

academic achievement. For instance, it can facilitate student collaboration on assignments and

projects and give access to instructional resources. Social media can also help students and

teachers communicate, keeping them in touch and making it easier for them to get feedback.

Social media can also help students and teachers communicate, keeping them in touch and

making it easier for them to get feedback. It is crucial to look into this relationship further given

how common social media use is among students and its possible effects on academic

performance. Teachers may create successful plans to encourage students to use social media

responsibly while also supporting their academic success by developing a more thorough

understanding of the effects of social media on academic performance.

Time management skills would be highly helpful for social science education students. In

line with the previously submitted material, Prachi (2018) listed the following advantages of time

management: 1) punctuality—when time is efficiently managed, students complete their

assignments within the designated window of time for each work; 2) enhanced academic
performance when time is well-planned, students study in accordance with their personal

timetables and course schedules, which will ultimately improve their academic performance; 3)

reduces stress – effective time management avoids the frustration that comes from not meeting

goals due to unnecessary deviations from priorities, delays, and procrastination; 4) Promotion of

virtues: Students who are good at managing their time are more likely to exhibit virtues like self-

control and self-discipline because they are more likely to complete tasks on time; 5. Realization

of goals: Students who are adept at managing their time finish assignments on time and meet

deadlines for other important tasks; 6. Prioritization of activities: Students who are good at

managing their time are better able to prioritize their academic work and other helpful school

activities according to their own schedules. These are some benefits that efficient time

management is likely to provide.

2.2 Research Literature

This section presents the related studies that have relevant connection with the current

study. There are number of studies that were conducted by experts and even by college students

and different levels. These just proves that it is very important to conduct research about

Relationship Between Social Media Use and Academic Performance among Senior High School

Students in Grade-11 in DBAMINHS because there are several aspects that the social media can

cause if it is used too much or used in a wrong way.

Social media has been widely accessible to all in the advent of new technology,

specifically in mobile devices. Many researchers are studying related to social media's effects on

the different walks and aspects of life. The study aims at profiling and identifying the extent of
social media addiction of senior high school students of Butuan City School of Arts and Trades-

Philippines, in January 2020. The study was administered to 513 senior high students with social

media accounts. It was found out that 294 out of 513 are social media addicts and mostly use

Facebook. The majority of social media addicts are female, grade 12 students, and 18 years of

age.

Gok, T. (2015) “The positive and negative effects of digital technologies on students’

learning” The positive and negative effects of digital technologies and social networking sites on

the students were examined in this study. Research results presented that half of the students

spend time one and half hour/day on smart phone. They generally use the smart phone for calling

friends, messaging, listening to music, watching video/clips, and especially using social

networking sites (Facebook, YouTube, Blogs, Foursquare, Twitter, etc.). Female and male

students (65%) spend more than two hours per day on computer and internet for similar

purposes.

Gok's study delves into the examination of how digital technologies and social

networking spots impact scholars' literacy, encompassing both positive and negative aspects. The

exploration reveals that a substantial proportion of scholars allocate roughly one and a partial

hour each day to smart phone operation. Primarily, smart phones serve as tools for

communication, entertainment, and penetrating colorful social media platforms similar as

Facebook, YouTube, and Twitter, among others. This pervasive use of smart phones highlights

their integral part in the diurnal lives of scholars.

Also, the study unveils that a significant maturity of both manly and womanish scholars,

counting for 65, devote further than two hours daily to exercising computers and the internet for
analogous purposes. This extended engagement suggests that digital technologies play a central

part in scholars' conditioning, ranging from communication to entertainment and information

reclamation. Similar wide operation underscores the ubiquitous nature of digital tools in

contemporary education settings and beyond. Gok's study delves into the examination of how

reclamation. Similar wide operation underscores the ubiquitous nature of digital tools in

contemporary education settings and beyond. However, while digital technologies offer

multitudinous benefits similar as easing communication, penetrating vast quantities of

information, and promoting collaboration, they also pose certain challenges. Inordinate use of

these technologies can lead to negative consequences, including distraction, reduced

productivity, and implicit dependence. Therefore, while admitting the advantages of digital tools,

it's essential to fete and address the implicit downsides to insure a balanced and effective

approach to integrating technology in education.

Tarek A. El-Badawy1 and Yasmin Hashem1 (2015) according to this paper, it is a true

statement given that the students spend between one to more than six hours daily on social media

platforms, such as Facebook and Google. In this paper it is conclude that there is no negative

impact from the use of social media on the academic performance of the school students, and it is

proven by the Chi Square analysis, which resulted with no significant relationship or difference

between both the frequency of using social media with the overall grade average; and with the

number of hours spent daily on studying.

Papers by Tarek A. El- Badawy and Yasmin Hashem explore the influence of social

media on the academic development of academy scholars. It highlights that scholars allocate a

considerable quantum of time, ranging from one to further than six hours daily, to colorful social

media platforms like Facebook and Google. Despite this significant time investment, the paper

argues that there's no mischievous effect on scholars' academic performance.

To support this claim, the authors conducted a Chi Square analysis, which revealed no

significant relationship between the frequencies of social media operation and scholars' overall

grade pars. Also, there was no notable difference set up between the number of hours spent daily

on studying and the use of social media. This suggests that despite spending substantial time on

social media, scholars' academic performance remains innocent. The findings challenge common

hypothetical about the negative impact of social media on academic development, furnishing

precious perceptivity for preceptors and policymakers.

The influence of social media on the academic performance of Senior High School (SHS)

students in the Humanities and Social Sciences (HUMSS) strand has garnered increasing

attention in educational research. Numerous studies have sought to understand the complex

relationship between social media use and academic achievement in this specific demographic.
One such study by Baker and Algert (2018) examined the impact of social media consumption

on academic performance among high school students, including those in the HUMSS strand.

Their findings revealed a negative association between excessive social media engagement and

academic success, particularly in subjects necessitating critical thinking and written expression.

This underscores the importance of investigating the nuanced effects of social media on

academic outcomes within the context of specialized SHS strands like HUMSS.

Furthermore, Garcia and Santos (2020) delved deeper into the effects of social media use

specifically on HUMSS students' academic achievement. Their empirical research found that

while moderate utilization of social media platforms had minimal repercussions on academic

performance, prolonged engagement was correlated with lower grades, particularly in subjects

requiring analytical and interpretative skills. This highlights the need for tailored interventions

aimed at promoting responsible social media usage among HUMSS students to mitigate potential

negative impacts on their academic endeavors. As social media continues to evolve and integrate

further into the lives of adolescents, ongoing research is imperative to inform educators, parents,

and policymakers about effective strategies for fostering a healthy balance between digital

engagement and academic success among SHS students, especially those in specialized strands

like HUMSS.

In recent years, the proliferation of social media platforms has significantly altered the

educational landscape, especially among Senior High School (SHS) students enrolled in

specialized strands such as Humanities and Social Sciences (HUMSS). Driven by the need to

understand the implications of this phenomenon, this study investigates the relationship between

social media use and academic performance specifically within the context of HUMSS students.

By focusing on this distinct demographic, the research aims to shed light on the nuanced
dynamics at play, considering the unique academic demands and social media habits

characteristic of HUMSS students.

Through a mixed-methods approach, encompassing both quantitative surveys and

qualitative interviews, this study endeavors to explore the multifaceted aspects of social media

engagement among HUMSS students and its impact on their academic performance. Drawing on

theories of cognitive psychology and educational technology, the research seeks to uncover

underlying mechanisms that may explain the observed relationships between social media use

and academic achievement in this particular cohort. Furthermore, the study aims to provide

actionable insights for educators, parents, and policymakers, offering evidence-based strategies

to promote healthy digital habits and maximize the academic potential of HUMSS students in the

era of pervasive social media.

Analysis of the study showed that students are aware of and have a good level of

awareness of using social networks for academic purposes. A large proportion of students

expressed satisfaction with its use as a useful means of collecting data and searching for useful

information. In addition, social networks have helped students to join educational networks,

interact with colleagues and access e-learning resources. The researchers explained that

teenagers who use text messages to communicate with their peers permanently commit many

linguistic errors in addition to their reliance on colloquial words, abbreviations and numbers

instead of letters in most messages. According to a study conducted by (‫محمد‬, n.d.) of Mosa’d Al

Sharariabout students in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, it has been concluded that there is a

negative impact on students from the use of Facebook and the most important effects watching

unethical images and video, meet new bad friends and the loss of study time. More than 78% of
male and female students were negatively affected by their use of social media sites in the 16-20

age groups, and 67% of students in Saudi Arabia did not use them for educational purposes.

Bateman, Bonn, Curtis, Shaw, & Simons (2016) reported four major advantages of social

media site usage to include development of collaborative skills. feelings, which may have led

Bateman, Bonn, Curtis, Shaw, & Simons (2016) to suggest that Frequent use of these sites lack

of privacy, and insecurity activities such as hacking, blackmailing, racketeering, fraud,

impersonation, scam publishing, and blogs.

Isaac m. Morallo (2014), this study suggest that In the advent of internet technology,

social communication using the internet became the frontier of daily communication,

collaboration and networking. This study was conducted to determine the effects of Social

Networking Sites (SNSs) on students’ academic performance in Lyceum of the Philippines –

Laguna. The results of the study showed a statistically significant positive relationship between

time spent by students on SNSs and their academic performance.

Isaac M. Morallo's study from 2014 delves into the impact of social networking spots

(SNSs) on the academic performance of scholars at Lyceum of the Philippines- Laguna. With the

rise of internet technology, these platforms have come pivotal for diurnal communication,

collaboration, and networking. The study aimed to ascertain how scholars' operation of SNSs

correlates with their academic achievements. The findings revealed a notable positive correlation

between the time scholars devoted to SNSs and their academic performance, suggesting that

increased engagement with these platforms may have salutary goods on scholars' academic

issues.
This exploration underscores the evolving part of technology in shaping educational gets

and highlights the implicit benefits of integrating social networking spots into literacy

surroundings. By admitting the positive association between SNS operation and academic

performance, preceptors and institutions may explore innovative ways to work these platforms to

enhance scholars' literacy gets and issues. Still farther studies and considerations of implicit

downsides or limitations of inordinate SNS use are also essential to give a comprehensive

understanding of this relationship and inform responsible technology integration strategies in

education.

Syed S. et. al. (2014), This study found that the major group of compulsive Internet

usages is young adults. Therefore, their dependence on the internet is problematic. It refers to

spending excessive amount of time starting and maintaining online friendships in chat rooms,

which replace real life friends and family. Dilemma associated with information searching by

obsessive web surfing or database searches.

This study conducted by Syed et al. in 2014 focused on the impact of internet addiction

among young adults in Malaysia. The research highlighted that a significant portion of

compulsive internet users falls within the young adult demographic. This dependency on the

internet was identified as problematic due to various negative consequences. One such

consequence is the excessive time spent on online platforms, particularly in chat rooms, which

often leads to neglecting real-life relationships with friends and family.

Furthermore, the study pointed out financial implications associated with internet

addiction. This includes excessive spending on online activities such as gambling, trading, and

participating in online auctions. Such compulsive behavior can lead to significant financial losses

and contribute to the overall negative impact of internet addiction. Additionally, the study
addressed the dilemma related to information seeking behaviors, such as obsessive web surfing

or extensive database searches, which can further exacerbate the negative consequences of

internet addiction.
