CHAPTER I

INTRODUCTION

Situational Analysis

The influence of these kinds of services are underpinned by the widespread availability

of smartphones and other mobile devices, which have made it much more convenient to

engage with other people and consume online content regardless of place and time. In the

Philippines, social medias are widely used by students and are currently Widespread by Its

popularity meanwhile in other countries like Japan, America and China. Social Media is more

advanced and more often used by students. About two-thirds of Americans say social media

have a mostly negative effect on the way things are going in the country today, according to

the Pew Research Center survey of U.S. which adults conducted on July 13-19, 2023.

Just one-in-ten Americans say social media sites have a mostly positive effect on the

way things are going, and one-quarter say these platforms have a neither positive nor

negative effect. Those who have a negative view of the many impacts of social media often

mention misinformation, hatred, and harassment which they frequently see on social media.

They also have concerns about users who easily believes everything they see or read online

or those who are the opposite who aren’t sure about what to believe. Additionally, they

bemoan social media’s role in fomenting bias and polarization. Social networking sites and

applications are widely used by students.

Social media use is an issue among the masses, the use of social media is widespread

by most people and are commonly used by students to express their opinions and Ideas.
When we refer to social media, applications such as Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, and

Instagram often come to mind. These applications are driven by user generated content, they

are also highly influential with tons of settings from purchasing/selling behaviors,

entrepreneurship, political issues to venture capitalism.

They spend a lot of their time on these sites as a part of their daily lives. Based on the

Smartphone Addiction Scale (Kwon et al., 2013), studies tried using smartphones on students

to try understanding the link between addictedness and the usage that usually divides them

into two groups (potential addicts and nonaddicts). Lee et al. (2014) tested it on 95 students

before asking them to install the Smart Logger software, which records particular events

linked to their phone activities, such as touch, text input, and active/inactive events. The

extracted patterns show that addict risk groups spent more incredible time on their

applications, with a preference for those that provided momentary pleasure, such as

entertainment. For example, Lee et al. (2017) had 35 students download an app that tracked

their smartphone usage for six weeks.

Studies revealed that among the various age groups of students, university students are

among the most crucial in using social networking sites. Social networking sites also plays a

very important role in education. Indeed, students are afforded multiple opportunities to

improve their learning and to have access to the latest information by connecting it with

learning groups and other educational systems.

Students can also exchange information by connecting with different individuals. This

can have a positive impact on the outcome of student learning. Schools in Agoo have

experienced many difficulties during the Pandemic and Covid-19 such as internet connection,
safety of teachers, etc. With the help of social media, students were able to achieve Online

schooling for the past 2 years. Not only is social media helpful to most students but it also

had an impact on their mental health, which refers to their emotional, psychological, and

social well-being. A lot of students in AKSS Highschool Department tend to spend a lot of

their time on social media both during the day and at night whether it’s for doing their

schoolwork’s or just for self-pleasure, and it can be contended that such technologies play an

important role in their daily lives.

However, despite their tremendous contributions to an individual’s knowledge, there is

also a need to determine whether such technologies are being used to gain knowledge or for

other purposes that may lead to the harmful effects of the misuse of technology. We

conducted this study because, in today’s generation, almost all students rely too much on the

internet and sometimes forget how to prioritize their schoolwork’s. The development of the

internet has resulted in academic issues. But even so, the internet has improved our way of

life by providing websites that assist people, particularly students, in finding related topics in

their work, on how to communicate, and to have access to a wide range of information.

However, a critical task today regarding social media is addressing student performance in

terms of their learning nature.

Social media focuses on building relationships and associations among students who

share common interests, social websites available on the web, students are tempted to

abandon their schoolwork and reading time in favor of engaging in social activities. Although

the internet is recognized as an important educational tool today, it can also lead to students

performing poorly in school because they spend most of their time on social media rather
than studying. This means that the more students use social media, the more they influence

their study habits because social media friends begin to exert influence on one another.
Conceptual Framework

At present, social media platforms can be used to retrieve necessary information that

serves educational purposes. However, social media used negatively affected the academic

progress, and studies have shown a strong positive relationship between social media use and

academic performance. Most participants used social media platforms to chat rather than

academic purposes. Past is studies have found that students who spend more time on social

media sites are likely to demonstrate poor academic performance.

This study is supported by the findings of Abbas et al (2019) which indicates that

social networks have both positive and negative effects depending on their purpose and form

of use in education. It is seen that these tools, each of which has different features for

learning aims, have potentials to provide cooperation, increase social interaction, interest and

motivation, sense of belonging, academic success, student-student and student-teacher

interaction, support learning anytime and anywhere, provide peer support, feedback, and

allow for sharing of information in education.

This study explores how social media use can impact students' academic performance,

with a focus on a Malaysian tertiary institution. (A. K. A Deen and A. A Hendricks, 2018). A

study indicated that technology we're most likely used for entertainment and to pass the time

than for learning purposes. These habits greatly affect academic performance and learning.

(Abbas et al., 2019).

Social media has more negative effects than positive ones (Woods and Scott 2016).

Since students tend to spend more time on social media other than educational purposes; this

tends to cause distraction from the learning environment, affecting their academic progress

(Bekalu et al., 2019), Hettiarachchi 2014). This is because they spend more time chatting

online and making friends on social media sites instead of reading books. This has a negative

effect on their academic performance (Owusu-Acheaw and Larson, 2015, Abbas et al., 2019).

Social media has turned into an essential element of individuals live including students

in today’s world of communication. Its use is growing significantly more than ever before

especially in the post-pandemic era, marked by a great revolution happening to the

educational systems. Recent investigations of using social media show that approximately 3

billion individuals worldwide are now communicating via social media (Iwamoto and Chun,

2020). However, social media use also contributes to building a sense of connectedness with

relevant others (Twenge and Campbell, 2019), which may reduce social isolation. Indeed,

social media provides several ways to interact both with close ties, such as family, friends,

and relatives, and weak ties, including coworkers, acquaintances, and strangers (Chen and Li,

2017).

Social media may provide individuals with a platform that overcomes barriers

of distance and time, allowing them to connect and reconnect with others and thereby expand

and strengthen their in-person networks and interactions. Our findings suggest that the ways

that people are using social media may have more of an impact on their mental health and

well-being than just the frequency and duration of their use. (Mesfin Awoke Bekalu, 2020)
Social media allows the social growth of society and also helps many businesses. It

provides tools like social media marketing to reach millions of potential clients. Many people

use social media to make themselves heard by the higher authorities. It can also help you

meet like-minded people. (Sri Chaitanya, 2021)

Charoensukmongkol (2018) reckoned that the mental health and well-being of the

global population can be at a great risk through the uncontrolled massive social media. These

researchers also showed that social media sources can exert negative affective impacts on

teenagers, as they can induce more envy and social comparison.

Social media exposes people especially the young generation to exciting new

activities and events that may attract them and keep them engaged in different media contexts

for hours just passing their time. It usually leads to reduced productivity, reduced academic

achievement, and addiction to constant media use (Alahmar, 2016).

In addition, studies shows than an array of eye and vision-related problems develop

with as little as 2 hours/day of continuous digital device use and referred as digital eye strain.

Various eye symptoms was evident with use of continuous scrolling on social media can

cause effects includes eyestrain, tired eyes, red eyes, irritation, blurred vision at near and

double vision. Analysis on the symptoms shows that eyestrain, irritation and red eyes were

common eye complaints in students spending more than 6 hours on the digital devices along

with systemic symptoms comprising shoulder pain, back pain and headache. (Ugam

Usgaonkar, Simran Rajan Shet Parkar, and Aksha Shetty, 2021).

Ugam Usgaonkar, Simran Rajan Shet Parkar, and Aksha Shetty. Impact of the use of

digital devices on eyes during the lockdown period of COVID-19 pandemic (2021)

Social Media Addiction is one of the biggest problems in today’s era (Alfacan,

Ozbek, 2019). According to Tutgun-Ünal (2020), social media addiction problem emerges

when the users cannot limit the use of social media networks and rather, spend more time

online. The excessive use of social media networks can lead to a serious addiction, which

requires someone to control social media and use it in a way that interferes with other life

tasks (Ryan, Chester, & Xenos, 2014). Similarly, social media addiction is a behavioural

addiction that is characterized as being overly concerned about social media, driven by an

uncontrollable urge to log on to or use social media, and devoting so much time and effort to

social media that it impairs other important life areas (Hilliard, 2019).

The most salient risk factors of based on the systematic review were activities such as

repeated checking for messages, personal investment, the time spent on social media, and

problematic or addictive use. Similarly, Mathewson (2020) investigated the effect of using

social media on college students’ mental health.

Whiting and Williams (2013) suggest that the usage occurs because of the instant

rewards gained by using it, the motivation to use social media will increase if these self-

satisfactions are met and because social media usage offers instant rewards self-satisfaction is

instantly felt by the person every time, they exhibit that behavior to achieve their goals

In addition, a study found that social mediaaddiction can lead to a decrease in

academic performance among students. The study surveyed 389 undergraduate students in
Malaysia and found that social media addiction was negatively linked with academic

performance, indicating that students who were more addicted to social media tended to have

lower grades. (Ain Nadzimah Abdullah, Syarifah Fazidah Adlina Syed Abdullah, and Syed

Noh Syed Ahmad, 2016).

CHAPTER II

REVIEW OF LITERATURE

This chapter presents the literature and studies that is relevant for the current study.

The chapter revolves on the themes relating on social media including social media addiction,

social media as a learning tool and the effects of social media.

A. Social Media Addiction

The rapid increase in the use of online networks (mainly the basis of the time spent) has

led some researchers to argue that social networking can lead to addiction in individuals

(Griffiths & Pontes, 2014; Koc & Gulyagci 2013).

According to the study of Dalvi-Esfahani, M. et al. (2021) teenagers are more likely

to spend more time on social media, because of having unlimited time they’ve had, since they
are unable to effectively control their own behavoir and because they have faster adapting

skills compared to the elderly (Cheng, C et al., 2021). According to Woodward (2023) those

people that spend over 5 hours a day using social media are considered “addicted” to it.

Social media addiction manifested differences according to daily use. According to

the research of Tutgun-Ünal (2020), those students who use social media between 4-6 hours a

day are found to be more addicted than those students who use it less. The students who use

social media between 4-6 hours a day are also medium addicted according to social media

addiction scale. In many studies, it is stated that, as the daily use of social media increases, so

does social media addiction (Tutgun-Ünal, 2015, 2019, 2020; Tutgun-Ünal and Deniz, 2016,

2019, 2020). Also, in some studies, it is stated that duration of internet use is not an indicator

of addiction by itself, but after 4 hours, internet addiction is often observed (Tutgun-Ünal,

2015, 2019, 2020). Also, in this study, students who use social media between 4-6 hours a

day are found to have relapse addiction. It can be said that these students cannot limit their

social media use; and continue to use it the same way each time. As far as conflict is

concerned, medium addicted people are found to use social media between 4-6 hours. It can

be said that these individuals get conflicted about their social media use with people around

them and experience many adverse effects in their life because of it.

In a study conducted by Fernandes et al (2020) on adolescents in India, Malaysia,

Mexico, and Great Britain, it was found out that during the pandemic, periods of social media

use, playing online games, and watching video content increased significantly compared to

before the pandemic. Similarly in the study of Lemanager et al. (2021) indicated that the

pandemic greatly contributed in the increase of social media usage in the world and that
many people frequently spend their free time on social media (Kashif & Aziz-Ur-Rehman,

2020).

From time to time, individuals can have a variety of actions that are potentially

addictive, such as using social networks extensively. These behaviors do not always have to

be addictive, sometimes they are just behaviors which leads to addiction, it all depends on

people how they use social network (Simsek, Elyicar & Kizilhan, 2019).

B. Advantages of using Social Media

Education

The use of social media has become an integral part of intellectual work, and students

posting study-related material on social media platforms is considered a reliable source of

information that is important to each community, such as those students, customers and

employees (Manag, J., 2021).

According to the study of Ktoridou and Eteokleous (2021), social media platforms

allow students to interact with group members to find help in solving learning problems. Also

in some studies, it is pointed out that using social media platforms increases learning

achievement of students (Al-Rahmi W.M., Yahaya, N., Alamri M. M., Aljarboa N.A., Kamin

Y. B., Sand M. S. B., 2019).

On the contrary, the study of Kitchakarn (2016) shows that students felt more

comfortable when social media was used as a learning tool in their course. It pointed out that

one of the reasons must have been the use of Facebook, which is the most popular social

networking site that people use in their daily lives. Results on this study found out that mostly
of the students use Facebook as communication for learning and a good place to learn

together. Similarly, on the study of Alenezi & Brinthaupt (2021), students recognize social

media as a helping tool as it easy to use enhancing their learning performance through

interaction with peers and faculty, collaborative learning and engagement.

Mao (2014) investigated the high school students’ affordances for social media, their

attitudes and beliefs about these new technologies, and related obstacles and issues in using

social media. According to this study, students believe that they could improve their learning

capabilities when using social media and also enjoy it for an assignment on their own

learning after school.

Sirakumar (2020) shows that social media plays an important role in the field of

education and students’ life as it is easier and convenient to access and provide information

and also communicate via social media. Also, with the use of social media, students can

watch educationally relevant videos or exchange information about what they have watched

or learned, and students also can discuss further online with the teachers. Similarly, the study

of Raut & Patil (2016) the strength of social media application is that they offer an assortment

of tools that learners can mix and match to best suit their individual learning styles and

increase their academic success.

Bateman, Bonn, Curtis, Shaw, & Simons (2016) reported four major advantages of

social media site usage to include enhancing relationships, motivating learning, availability of

personalized course materials and development of collaborative skills.

Based from the study of Dalvi-Esfahani, M. et al. (2021) reasons why people use

social media is because social media usage can give them self-confidence and mental stability

as it is possible for users to express themselves in a virtual environment to stay in touch and

connect with people who share interest, however some study found out that this excessive use

of social media can lead to social media addiction and some health problems (Dalamana, T.

et al., 2019).

Akram and Kumar (2017) Among positive effect, includes social media as a way of

socializing, sharing knowledge, updating oneself, learning on various sources, and a way of

sharing ideas.

Communication

Social media may provide individuals with a platform that overcomes barriers of

distance and time, allowing them to connect and reconnect with others and thereby expand

and strengthen their in-person networks and interactions.

While virtual interaction on social media doesn’t have the same psychological benefits

as face-to-face contact, there are still many positive ways in which it can help you stay

connected and support your wellbeing.

Social media enables another to communicate and stay up to date with family and

friends around the world, Find new friends and communities; network with other people who

share similar interests or ambitions, Join or promote worthwhile causes; raise awareness on

important issues and Seek or offer emotional support to others during tough times. (Lawrence

Robinson and Melinda Smith, 2020)

C. Disadvantages of social media

Distraction

Akram and Kumar (2017) enumerate some negative effects of social media in

education. The negative effect, it includes social media as a distraction, time wastage, and

reduce learning capabilities which results to a very poor grades perceived by students.

As explained by Manjur et al. (2021) on their study on the effects of social media

usage on learning, social interactions, and sleep duration among university students. Social

networking sites are widely used by university students. This study investigated the impact of

social media on academic performance. students were more likely to use such technologies to

have fun and pass time than for learning purposes. These habits substantially affect academic

performance, learning, and knowledge acquisition, Abbas et al. (2019). Moreover, the

students reported that social media use had affected their learning activities significantly.

Some of them felt more drawn toward social media than toward studies. Moreover, according

to the students going to bed between 11 pm and 12 am, by sleeping so late can affect their
participation in class. In addition to, Past studies have found that students who spend more

time on social media sites are likely to demonstrate poor academic performance. This is

because they spend time chatting online and making friends on social media sites instead of

reading books.

Akram & Kumar (2017) they found out that social media is greatly a waste of students’

time to as it does not help them in their learning activities because they are getting pulled in

to utilizing online networking locales not realizing the time that they've consume. Findings

on this study show that some students are not able to deliver their work in the specified time

frame as their time waste on unnecessary activities that greatly affect their academic perform.

Addiction

Akhtar (2013) revealed that immoderate usage of internet can result to addiction

among students, and it could lead to poor academic attainment. The author opined that net

addiction can cause reduction in time spent on studies, fundamental drop in grades, low

interest in extracurricular activities and loss of interest in lessons. Furthermore, net addiction

amongst adolescents has been related to psychological and intellectual problems which

include anxiety, despair, and loneliness.

This is because they remain in some sort of virtual world of the net. (Turel &

Toraman 2015) found in their study that as academic performance of students deemed

successfully increases, their internet addiction average decrease. This implies that, internet

addiction has an effect on the academic performance of students.

D. Coping with Social Media Addiction

According to Fleck and Johnson-Migalski (2015), though social media, at first, plays

the role of a stress-coping strategy, when individuals continue to see stressful conditions

(probably experienced and shared by others in media), they begin to develop stress through

the passage of time.

Time Management

Time management for students can be one of the most important and difficult skills to

learn during college years. Lucier (2013) argues that with so much going on, having

strong time management can sometimes seem impossible. However, there is time

management options that can help students take control of their life instead of getting

exhausted and behind in academics. Time management is aimed at managing the time you

spend doing things that help you achieve your goals and the things that you personally

prioritise and value (Oxford Brookes University, 2012).

Macan, Shahani, Dipboye and Phillips (2013) opine that one potential coping

strategy frequently offered by university counselling services is ‘time management’.

Lay and Schouwenburg (2013) examine the relation of time management to trait

procrastination and behaviour where time management was conceptualised in terms of setting

goals and priorities, the use of mechanics and the perceived control of time. Macan et al

(2013) observe that perceived control of time is the most predictive of time management

behaviour scale. They argue that students who perceived the necessity of time management

reported significantly greater evaluations of their performance, greater work and life

satisfaction, less role ambiguity, less role overload, and fewer job-induced and somatic
tensions. On this note, Mayo (2013) opines that prioritisation can help users to managing

time wisely and minimising effects.

Blurry Vision: Health Risk associated with excessive use of social media

“Digital eye strain–DES” (2) is a newer term, coined to include all aspects of eyesight

issues related to long hours of work in front of a digital screen.

Sheppard AL, Wolffsohn JS. Digital eye strain: prevalence, measurement and

amelioration. BMJ Open Ophthalmol. (2018)

A review of 38 studies of problematic internet use among students from the Southeast

Asia, a region with high reported prevalence of internet and gaming addiction, reported that

19% of the subjects experienced eye strain (Mahapatra A, Sharma P, Bhargava R.,2018)

Studies in South Korea demonstrated that time spent watching content on any digital

screen (Moon JH, Lee MY, Moon NJ., 2014)

and especially in a smartphone are risk factors for DES in adolescents. Using smartphones for

more than 2 h daily is associated with a higher incidence of multiple DES symptoms. Studies

on the impact of exposure time to digital screens on children demonstrate that the chances of

symptoms increase after 2–4 h of exposure.

Research has also confirmed that screens of digital devices may interfere with

children's' sleep due to blue light emission (Cheung CH, Bedford R, De Urabain IRS,

Karmiloff-Smith A, Smith TJ.,2017), which suppresses melatonin production negatively

affecting circadian rhythms and cognitive performance. This leads to a vicious circle of poor

sleep hygiene due to excessive use of screen-enabled devices that are augmented by the

circadian rhythm disruption (Touitou Y, Touitou D, Reinberg A.,2016). Most videogamers

indulge in large periods of play precisely during night time, since night playing can offer

longer uninterrupted duration of play and is conducive to game genres which need dedicated

time to organize multi-playing. Adolescents will have completed their study workload for the

following day or simply afford to spend all this night time because parental monitoring is

easier to avoid.

Hobbies as Stress Relief

Taking up new hobbies that don’t revolve around technology- especially with a group-

can help ease feelings of boredom and loneliness (Ricci, 2018). If your mind is busy, you

won’t feel a need to go on your phone. Remember, set an example for both you and others.

Researchers found that enjoyable activities performed during leisure time were

associated with lower blood pressure, total cortisol, waist circumference, and body mass

index, and perceptions of better physical function. Such activities were also correlated with

higher levels of positive psychosocial states and lower levels of depression and negative

effect. ( Elizabeth Scott, 2019).

CHAPTER III

METHODOLOGY

This chapter deals with the methods and procedures used by the researchers in this

study to answer the specific problems investigated. It provides a thorough explanation of the

study methodology used, the steps taken to collect the required data, and the analysis of the

study.

Research Design

According to Ming et. al, (2013) Phenomenological research is a qualitative research

approach that seeks to understand and describe the universal essence of a phenomenon. The

approach investigates the everyday experiences of human beings while suspending the

researchers' preconceived assumptions about the phenomenon.

In other words, phenomenological research studies lived experiences to gain deeper

insights into how people understand those experiences.

Researchers using phenomenological research design assume that people use a

universal structure or essence to make sense of their experience. They interpret the

participants' feelings, perceptions, and beliefs to clarify the essence of the phenomenon under

investigation. Phenomenological research design requires the researcher to bracket whatever

a priori assumption they have about the experience or phenomenon.

In this study, the researchers used phenomenology research design focused on

examining how extent to which the respondents used social media in terms of their

participation in a social network, the frequency with which their accounts were accessed

during the day, how long they have been using social media and how many hours they spend

their social media usage and activities. Additionally, it investigated the perceived results of

social media to the students’ academic achievement.

Thematic analysis is a method of analyzing qualitative data. It is usually applied to a

set of texts, such as an interview or transcripts. The researcher closely examines the data to

identify common themes topics, ideas and patterns of meaning that come up repeatedly.

There are various approaches to conducting thematic analysis, but the most common

form follows a six-step process: familiarization, coding, generating themes, reviewing

themes, defining, and naming themes, and writing up. Following this process can also help

you avoid confirmation bias when formulating your analysis.

common themes, ideas, and patterns of meaning that come up repeatedly.

Sampling

Purposive Sampling is a sampling technique where subjects are selected through the

criteria of using social media more than 4hrs a day and the convenient accessibility and

proximity to the researchers.

In this study, the researchers used purposive sampling because this allows us to gather

information much faster and more manageably. This sampling technique is affordable, easy

and the subjects are readily available. Using this, we chose certain participants in the junior

high school students of Agoo Kiddie Special School which is located in San Antonio, Agoo,

La Union, and make them part of our study. Those students who’s willing to take part in our

research are incorporated into our study. The researchers also considered the time and

location of taking the sample. Students who lived near places of Tubao and Agoo are areas

selected for our study. With this, it allows us to collect information more easily in the most

available time that we have, also with the tight budget that is used in conducting our research.

Data Gathering

This study used primary and secondary sources of data to provide credible evidence to

future researchers. Primary sources will usually be the main objects of the analysis. Examples

are interview transcripts, novels, films, historical documents, and official statistics.
Secondary sources are another type of data is anything that gives direct evidence about the

people, events, or phenomena that are being researched.

The researchers will personally provide the research instrument to the respondents.

They presented and discussed the Significance of the study and were able to accomplish

interviewing each of the respondents with no problems.

The interview was held at the respondent's chosen location for a more comfortable

environment and was able to answer the questions correctly and effectively.

The researchers were able to interview each of the 18 respondents at each of their

chosen locations.

After the interviews were all completed. The answers were encoded and themed to

their corresponding groups.

The data was used for analysis and interpretation for this study.

Data Triangulation

Data triangulation is an extremely valuable method for analysis because it allows for a

more complete, detailed, and accurate picture to be drawn from multiple data sources. The

triangulation involves Junior High Students, their guardians, and their teachers as this study’s

respondents.
The different data sources provide different perspectives and insights, which when

compared and incorporated together can provide a much more thorough picture of the overall

data. This allows for greater depth and insight into the data as a whole and can help to tease

out trends or patterns that might otherwise be missed in a single data source.

Research Instrument

The instrument used was a Semi-structured Interview in a face-to-face setting to gather

the needed data for the assessment and evaluation to determine the perceived effects of social

media on junior high school students at Agoo Kiddie Special School High School

Department.

In this way, the instrument is authorized to obtain reliable and valid responses from all

the respondents. Conducting a Semi-structured interview format uses a set of pre-defined

questions or a set of question categories but leaves room for open-ended follow-up questions

and conversations. This allows for a more natural conversation, while still ensuring that all

the important topics are answered with in-depth explanations.

The respondents are asked questions regarding this study's main topic and are given

free will to answer, follow up questions are asked at the end of every question depending on

the respondents' answer. The interview has questions that relate to the study and were

answered accordingly.

Data Analysis
Thematic analysis is one of the most commonly utilized methods of analysis in

qualitative research, Ashley Castleberry and Amanda Nolen (2018). This sort of analysis is

done when you want to break down your qualitative data into a lot easier way to process. It is

a methodology evaluation of your study to determine what data has similar themes, concepts,

subjects, and patterns against each other, Jenna Crosley (2021). The purpose of a thematic

analysis is to uncover the underlying meaning and purpose of your current study, analyzing

the data to know what your goals is and aims for this specific study. Thematic study is all

about exploring a deeper meaning to your research, to find and polish up your research

questions as you go along.

Thematic analysis is often used for qualitative studies for the reason, it is more

accessible especially for young researchers. It can easily analyze feedback from the

respondents of a study. It allows you a lot of pliability in interpreting the data, it also allows

you to approach larger data sets feasible by sorting them into broad themes, Caulfield (2019).

Thematic analysis gives assistance to researchers by helping them understand those features

of a phenomenon that participants talk about customarily or thoroughly, and the ways in

which those features of a phenomenon may be connected.

In relation to our study, “The Perceived Effects of Social Media on the Junior High

School Students of Agoo Kiddie Special School”, Thematic Analysis is necessary in

completing our study because what we are using is a qualitative type of research method that

requires thematic analysis for us, researchers, to have a deeper understanding of our topic and

to easily breakdown our qualitative data. Since our topic focuses on the effects of social

media on the students, thematic analysis allows us researchers to easily break down our
qualitative data in an easier process by exploring further the meaning of our research with the

qualitative data that has been given.

set of texts, such as an interview or transcripts. The researcher closely examines the data to

identify common themes, ideas, and patterns of meaning that come up repeatedly.

Conducting a thematic analysis commonly follows a six-step process:

1. Familiarization

This involves the researchers transcribing the audio, reading and re-reading interview

transcripts, taking initial notes, and generally looking through the data to get familiar.

2. Coding

The researcher will now code the data. Coding means highlighting sections of our text –

usually phrases or sentences – and coming up with shorthand labels or “codes” to describe

their content.
Based from the data gathered, the researchers formulate codes from the different responses
from the students, teachers and parents. The responses are arranged and classified from the
following codes given.

Table 1. Responses and Codes

Responses Codes
“Yes, from our generation or our century we use technology as a Learning tool
tool in teaching and learning, so it is important and essential to
use social media platforms like google, youtube for the students to
learn something not just in books or context books.”

“Yes, I consider social media as a learning tool because using of

social media po natatapos ko po yung mga assignments and
projects and deadlines ng mabilis.”

“Yes. We need to accept that we are already living in a internet

world, with all the data and files readily available online. I can
say social media is the perfect tool for me to learn new ideas and
things, I just need to be careful in believing things that is on
social media because of the proliferation of things.”

“Yes. Dahil tinutulungan tayo ng social media para maintindihan

yung lessons natin or mga iba pa.”

“Sometimes well Ms. Chloe Milo uses her phone, but it is not
frequent in those times she doesn’t use social media rather she
uses it for reading her notes or downloading pdf’s that I have sent
on schoology.”

“Nakakatulong po ito sa academics because of- sa advantage po

na mas madami po yung matututunan naming sa about sa
subjects po at sa topics.”

"Yes. Natutulungan sa pag-intindi ng mga topics or lessons.’

“In my opinion social media has a very great impacts on my

students because there are some activities that are related to my
lessons that they need to browse on their social media to survey
or to gather information that they can use in my subject.”

“Oo. Sa paggawa ng assignment or sa pagrereview, research.”

“As far I’ve known kezia’s using facebook as a tool and youtube
and google also in searching some words regarding our topic or
lesson.”
“In my subject social media is very useful because there are some
topics or lessons that are connected on the students using social
media, because social media can have them gather information
from it that they can use in my topic.”

“I believe its beneficial in this world parang full of technologies,

mas madami mag access ng mga information ng mga facts about
assignment.”

“I think they’re also a positive side of chloe using the social

media, sometimes I am just surprised that she is using some
terminologies that I know I haven’t thought her but I guess
because of her reading it on social media you know widen her
vocabularies. “

“Those impacts are positive because it helps them gather

information specially those who are very timely and irrelevant
and are connected to my topic.”

“Opo, kasi nakakakuha po tayu ng use of information sa social

media lalo na kapag kailangan po sa school, yung mga projects
na hindi po kayang sagutan pwede pong maka help yung social
media masagot po natin yung project natin.”

“If that social media is to be used for interaction and exchange of

ideas and learnings then it could be.”

“Learning tool din ang social media lalong lalo na kapag

kailangang mag search ng mga assignments o kayay activities
nakakatulong siya”

“Nakakatulong po ang paggamit ng social media kasi po doon po

ako nakakakuha ng information for your assignment or projects.”

“Oo. sa pagreresearch about sa mga pinag-aaralan namin.”

“Yes po, kasi nagagamit ko po siya pang school, pwede din po for
fornication po and it also helps you in school para for
educational, not just for playing games and for spending time on
online games po.”

Communication
“Yes, because it can help through group chats, they can share
knowledge about their projects, they can tell each other kasi hindi
naman sila magkakapitbahay magkakalayo sila, so yun yung
usage ng social media and siguro yung pagiging responsible
nalang using social media.”
“Yes certainly, one of my habits is that I’m always online and I’ve
always told my students, my advisory class or none, I’ve always
told them that they can contact me anytime as long as I’’m awake
so that makes it easier for them to message me or to inquire about
our lessons and for me to help them or even conduct some online
remedial classes for those who want. So yeah, it did help me a
lot.”

“Almost every day, I use social media to interact with my parents

and relatives.”

“Yes, because we are already in a modern world siguro alam

naman natin most of the kids are using social media siguro bihira
na lang nagyon yung bata na walang cellpone, laptop or walang
ipad so I think it also part of their social life to be able to use
various platforms of the socia media with this they are able to be
updated with what is happening around them at the same time it is
also a way or a tool with them to communicate with their friends
and relatives.”

“With the student’s use of social media, I have created a facebook

page for the student’s it’s close group actually. For which students
under my subjects are to post their performace task and their
other output in there that requires them to interact with netizen of
the social media. So yes, I observe this association between
students and the use of their social media in their academic
performance, However if that social media is not related in our
subject then don’t allow the use if that.”

“I do sometimes use social media for the students to explore and

as well experience further other learnings and, ofcourse an
exchange of ideas from other learners.”

“Ginagamit ko po ang social media for entertainment po and

para po ma-pass po yung time.”

“Yes frequently, every time na dumadating siya sa bahay

gumagamit na siya naglalaro.”
“nanonood lang po ako ng mga videos sa facebook and
Entertainment
nagchachat with friends.”

“Yes, most of the time during her free time she usually takes a
hold of her phone and browse her social media accounts in
Instagram and in facebook.”

“For me, I can see using social media as a learning tool in their Desciplined use of
academics as long as we teachers know to limit their use of social social media
media and guide them so that social media can be a learning
platform, and not an addictive application/s rather than the
students use.”

“Not necessarily na need, but we can certainly use social media

as another platform, we can-you can-we can always use it to our
advantage, just depends on HOW we can use social media. But I
don’t consider it as a need as of the world.”

‘With regards Alwyn and Denver's use of social media platform I

don't notice them during class but maybe during their free Time
since I don't stay during their free time in their classroom, So I
don't see them using any social media platforms.”

“No, because I can see that Chelsea is a very responsible child

and whenever I say or announced that you must keep your phone
cause your teachers are coming, Chelsea is one of the students
who definitely listen to her teachers.”

“Yes, because social media to ensure it could or break you

depending on how you use it. If you use social media responsibly,
then the outcome can be productive.”

“No, she has no self-discipline. She is not satisfied to her time or

day when she is not holding her gadget, chatting her friends and
watching tiktok or video clips.”

“Not actually totally disciplined kasi there are times when I ask,
he to do some household chores you know what is common word Undisciplined use of
nilang wait lang po, sandal lang po, tapusin ko lang po, I think social media
that’s already common. In the meantime, minsan di nila
namamalayan nakakarami na silang screen time.”

“If she neglects her study and commitments that’s the time, I
consider her to be undisciplined when using social media.”

“I guess so particularly not with chloe but in general for kids I Health Risks
guess it also affects their health especially when it comes to their
eyesight because the more screen time that you spend nakakalabo
ng mata so yun din siguro yung isang reason kaya bakit ngayon
pabata ang mga batang magkakaroon ng eyeglassebecause
masyado silang naho-hook sa paggamit ng computers mga
gadgets.”

“Yes, it cause harm to her health such as blurring of vision,

weakening her mind, especially when doing practical work, she
lack of energy and strategy.”

“Yes definitely because yung mata niya medyo lumalabo kasi

“For the past three grading periods her academic performance

has no evidence that it has been affected the only thing that has
been observed is that she procrastinates at times even she uses
social media she still manages to elevate her academic
performance.”

“Yes, what is observed is that before doing her school works or

assignments home she still uses cellphone, watching youtube
videos and listen to music at times she plays musical instruments
she really watches television.”

“Pag may assignment, di siya nakaka focus sa ginagawa niyang

assignment or activity lalo nap ag sa messenger madami nag me-

“Yes, by watching social media she enjoy it more than studying,

especially if about love stories and kdrama she forgotten that she
should do especially when reviewing, there is also a tendacy to
stay up late.”

“Yes, I can see the significant effects of those people, those

students of mine na spend their time or stay on their phones sa
online. Their grades are I mean- medyo napapalya-medyo
napapabayaan nila academics nila dahil sa mga social media and
whatever things na ginagawa nila.”

“I don't think so that social media can be considered as a

learning tool”

“Hindi lang nakakatulong lalong lalo na pag sa games

ginagamit.”

“Yes, pag po minsan naoover po sa paguuse, nawawalan ako sa

focus in finishing mga requirements or activities.”

“But if you let social media use you, then it will destroy you.”

“Lalong lalo na kapag may mga kalaro siya online doon sila
nagtatagal maglaro kaya nauubos yung time niya sa laro kesa
mag-aral sana.”

“No, I don’t think so but we need social media in learning.”

In the other hand I think theres also a disadvantage of that

because since she is quite hook of her social media account
nababawasan yung time niya mag review.”

“No, because there are books that can be used as study tools that
are more detailed and reliable than social media.”

“As a teacher, you can observe the students if they can’t stop
looking at their phones even during their class and whenever we
see those students some of them will keep their pones but
sometimes some of them are very hard-headed and they keep
using their phones and that is an indication that they are addicted Addiction
to social media that even the teachers they don’t already listen to
them, but rather they keep their eyes on their phone and their ears
closed from the voice of their teachers.”

“During or inside the classroom I notice Chelsea sometimes use

social media but does not use it during the class, rather during
her free time (approximately 1 hr and 30 mins)”

us, we need to balance the use of it so that students would not be
addicted to social media.”

“If that social media is not related in our subject, then don’t allow
the use of that.”

Among all the responses given, researchers accumulate 11 different codes in total.
The following codes are interpreted as follows:

a) Social media as a learning tool.

The responses are interpreted as students using social media applications for academic

purposes, like for researching new topics or lessons, downloading pdf lessons sent by their

teachers, etc.

b) Gathering Information using social media.

the following responses contain or are interpreted as social media is used for students

to gather information for their schoolwork’s and other academic requirements.

c) Communication.

The following responses are interpreted as social media being used for

communication purposes, whether it is for contacting relatives or are used to chat with other

players while playing online games.

d) Entertainment
The following responses are interpreted as students using social media for entertainment, like

for watching videos on YouTube, scrolling through TikTok, using to know the latest gossip,

etc.

e) Disciplined use of social media

The responses contained are interpreted as how the students are responsible or are

well disciplined whenever they are using social media. Like how they can manage their time

and how they often do not procrastinate when doing shores or their school activities.

f) Undisciplined use of social media.

The following responses are interpreted as how students use more than 4 hours on social

media, to the point that they neglect or procrastinate doing their chores and school activities.

Proper time management are not often followed.

g) Health Risk.

-The following responses contained are interpreted as to how having a screen time for

hours can greatly impact on a student's health negatively such as having ulcer, blurriness of

vision, lack of energy and etc. With students getting more and more hooked these days, they

are more likely to have such impacts to their body.

h) Distraction.

The responses contained are interpreted as a distraction or who are ‘Procrastinates’

when they are about to do household chores or school activities.

i) Addiction

The following response is interpreted to how a student becomes restless whenever they are

unable to use their phone to play or chat someone online and would sometimes become hot

headed in the process. They would spend more than 4 hours on social media alone.
j) Time Spent using social media at School.

The following responses contained are interpreted to how many hours each student uses on

social media and to how they use it (Facebook, Online Games, TikTok) at school.

k) Time Spent using social media at Home

The following responses contained are interpreted to how many hours each student uses on

social media and to how they use it (Facebook, Online Games, TikTok) at home.

l) Strategies for effective use of social media.

The following responses contained in this code are interpreted as to how students can

limit their social media usage and how if overused can affect their academic performance

greatly.

3. Generating themes

They will now identify the patterns among the coded data and will start combining the codes

into themes. And will come up with themes that are generally broader than codes.

From the given codes, there were two (2) sub themes obtained categorized as the

negative and positive effects of social media. These sub themes will be classified as the

effects of social media. This will be the central theme of this study.

 Effects of social media

The following codes are contained due to them being interpreted to have both positive and

negative effects to the students who use social media, moderately or immoderately.

 Usage of social media

The following codes are contained due to them being interpreted on how students use social

media, whether they are for school purposes (assignments, research, etc.) or whether they use

it for entertainment purposes (online games, scrolling for gossip, etc.).

 Time spent using social media

The following codes are contained to show the time spent of students on social media alone

and in what way they use it on their given time.

4. Reviewing themes

To make sure that our themes are useful and accurate representations of the data, the

researchers will have to return to the data set and compare the themes to make sure that no

further problems are made.

5. Defining and naming themes

This involves the researchers to formulate exactly what each theme means and to figure out

how it helps us understand the data. Naming themes involves coming up with a brief and

easily understandable name for each theme.

6. Writing up

Finally, like all academic texts, writing up a thematic analysis requires an introduction to

establish our research question, aims and approach. The researchers will describe how often

the themes come up and what they mean, including examples from the data as evidence.

By Following this process, the steps will result in a thematic map:

some activities that are related to my lessons that they need to browse on their social media
to survey or to gather information that they can use in my subject.
Those impacts are positive because it helps them gather information specially. Those who are
very timely and irrelevant and are connected to my topic.”
-Teacher 1
“As far as I’ve known shes using facebook as a tool and youtube and google also in
searching some words regarding our topic or lesson.”
-Teacher 2

time or stay on their phones sa online. their grades are medyo napapabayaan nila academics
nila dahil sa- sa mga social media and whatever things na ginagawa nila.”
-Teacher 3
“With the student’s use of social media, I have created a Facebook page for the students it's

power us, we need to balance the use of it so that students would not be addicted to social
media.”
-Teacher 1
“Yes, from our generation or our century we use technology as a tool in teaching and
learning, so it is important and essential to use social media platforms like google, youtube
for the students to learn something not just in books or context books.”
-Teacher 2
“Not necessarily na need, But we can certainly use social media as another platform. we can
always use it uhh to our advantage, just depends on HOW we use social media. But I don't
consider it as a need as of the world.”

the contents however if that social media is to be used for interaction and exchange of ideas
and learnings then it could be. So it is a two way process and a two way consideration on my
part as a teacher because I do sometimes use social media for the students to explore and as
well experience further other learnings and, ofcourse an exchange of ideas from other
learners.”
-Teacher 4
“For me, I can see using social media as a learning tool in their academics as long as we
teachers know to limit their use of social media and guide them so that social media can be a
learning platform, and not an addictive application/s rather that the students use.”
