INTRODUCTION

In the modern era of linking, the effect of social media on learning is becoming important.
The world is getting smaller, and social media and other forms of technology are changing the
way we receive instruction. If used properly, social media and education can support one
another. Students' access to new educational opportunities is rapidly expanding because of
internet platforms. There are many beneficial effects of technologies and social media. College
students are one of the benefactors of this kind of medium, especially for learning materials and
for gathering information. According to a survey conducted by the Educause Center for
Applied Research [ECAR] in 2012 of students in higher education, more students are accepting
the use of mobile computing devices (cellphones, smartphones, and tablets) in HEIs.
Approximately 67% of the students who participated in the survey agreed that social media and
mobile devices have a significant impact on their academic success and career development.

However, the same has certain drawbacks. There is a clear connection between university
students' use of social media and their academic success. However, the less positive aspects of
technological development have led to problems like the loss of real life values, particularly
among students who make up the majority of users interacting on social networking sites.
Online social networking sites put a strong emphasis on creating and reflecting social bonds
between people who have similar hobbies or interests. With so many social networking sites
available online, students may be tempted to put off doing their homework and reading in favor
of conversing with friends online. Students are now heavily addicted to the current online
craze, which includes Facebook, Twitter, etc. Nowadays, the majority of kids and students have
Facebook profiles. The explanation why the majority of them struggle in school might not be
implausible. While many people may be eager to point the finger at bad teachers, if they have
not heard about the Facebook craze, they may have to think even harder (Oche & Aminu
2010).

MAIN BODY

MENTAL

A person's excessive use of social media can have terrible consequences, starting with
anxiety and ending in depression. According to (Pantic et al., 2012), there is a correlation
between adolescent depression and Facebook use. These findings were replicated by Rosen et
al. (2013), who found that people who spent the majority of their time online and managing
their image on social networking sites had substantial depression symptoms. In a similar vein,
Lou et al. (2012) claimed that students who use Facebook frequently report feeling more
lonely. Additionally, it has been discovered that using social media worsens psycho-social
issues like self-esteem and adjustment (Kalpidou et al., 2011). According to Davila's (2012)
research, young people with severe depression symptoms had less pleasant and more harmful
social connections. Kraut et al. (1998) and Shah & Grant (2002) report evidence of an inverse
relationship between depression and internet use, and they further opine that different social
activities like gaming and talking reduce the risk of depression.

According to Dennon (2022), social media is frequently used by people to cope with stress
and other challenges. The foundation of group therapy, which has long been used by groups like
Alcoholics Anonymous, is hearing other people's stories. Instead of going to a meeting,
someone might just search for #sober on social media to get motivation and support.Instagram
and TikTok are some platforms that emerging adults use to better understand their mental
health and self-diagnose. Through social media, many young people learn to identify the signs
of depression, anxiety, eating disorders, and other mental health illnesses. However, experts are
warning that social media cannot substitute professional counseling or therapy in the treatment
of severe mental illnesses. Poorer overall outcomes for mental health are associated with
excessive or unhealthy use.

SOCIAL

Technology has aided civilization in a variety of ways, the most notable of which are health
care, education, and communication. It has also changed the way people enjoy themselves,
participate in politics, and work. Society and technology are inextricably linked. In our daily
lives, we use and rely on technology, and our technical necessities and demands continue to
increase. To travel, communicate, learn, do business, and live comfortably, humans rely on
technology. On the other side, technology has made us anxious. Its misuse has poisoned the
environment and presented a significant threat to our lives and civilization. This needs the
effective application of technology.

On the impact of technological advances and contemporary comforts on the quality of life in
modern society, there are two points of view. While some say that technological advancements
have improved people’s lives, others contend that they have had a negative impact.
While technological advancements have both benefits and drawbacks, I contend that the
benefits exceed the drawbacks, and so technological growth is good for modern civilization.

EMOTIONAL

Teenagers constantly use social media and stay in touch, and they may encounter peer
pressure, being mistreated, and rejected.

A construct was examined by Schneider, Zwillich, Bindl, Hopp, Reich, and Vorderer
(2017).
called "cyber-ostracism," the experience of being ignored or excluded online. This construct is
now a danger to human needs like self-worth and a sense of belonging. No one should ever be
alone or isolated because the purpose of social media is to connect people. They discovered
that cyber-ostracism had a significant impact about identity, worth, and a purposeful life. They
also discovered that online rejection had a significant impact on mood. The second study
examined a connection between using social media and they discovered that cyber-ostracism
on social media has a detrimental impact on emotional well-being. Researchers have found that
cyber-ostracism has an effect on emotional well-being. Researchers contend that their research
demonstrates how exclusion might endager needs and emotional states.

The study by Koutamanis, Vossen, and Valkenburg (2015) investigates the relationship
between adolescent social and emotional development with social media. They think that
Negative comments on social media are likely to happen, which could have detrimental
consequences on since peer acceptability and social acceptance are essential for teenage social
development, the growth of a teenager's self-concept. A small percentage of teenagers receive
the majority of their internet profiles receive critical comments, and their self-esteem is
attacked. Koutamanis et al. (2015) conducted a survey of 785 teenagers to determine how
frequently they experienced unpleasant online peer evaluation. They discovered that teenagers
with a riskier internet behavior negative feedback was more likely to be given to behaviors.
They also discovered a gender difference. Age was associated with higher online social
exploration, which led to more detrimental behaviors. No correlation between age and harmful
online self-presentation, such as uploading images while smoking or drinking.

According to Koutamanis et al. (2015), their study contributes to the expanding collection of
knowledge and findings about internet usage and unfavorable comments, while stressing that
it's crucial to concentrate on the behavior and other personal factors that may result in
unfavorable feedback during adolescence. Victimization and unfavorable comments are only
two examples of the detrimental effects that social emotional development in adolescents might
be impacted by social media.

NO PRESENCE OF TECHNOLOGY

The interactive web is made possible by social media platforms because they encourage user
participation. Creating material to participate in, comment on, and share with their social
network and other users and the general public who have access to content in text, video,
picture, and audio formats PowerPoint and PDF (Cohen, 2011). Social media can be thought of
as the tools, services, and peers with similar interests can connect more easily through
communication. The use of social media in the classroom is growing rapidly and is likely to
have implications for practice and provision of education, particularly in terms of interacting

with students or with their coworkers to view news and show up on their walls. (Patel,
Management of Social Media, 2016).

We can no longer disregard social media in today's world. We use it nearly always to make
an announcement, to describe our activities, to view the schedule that our lecturers have
created, etc. The majority of schools use social media to find materials for teaching and
learning. Technology can enhance learning processes and make them more efficient. However,
there is still a gap between educators' hopes for participatory learning through technology is
largely used for teaching by educators due to the realities of our profession. Prensky (2002)
Utilizing social media has implications for students, teachers, and Education is a process of
learning. Social media is connected to other online sources to assist them in obtaining
education (Pitler, Hubbell, & Malennoski, 2007).This imparts knowledge process went
smoothly. Social networking sites and in-person interactions are used in education. Despite the
fact that teachers' roles need to be clarified, engagement might help learners feel more included
to receive adequate support in order to create effective digital pedagogies
(White. Garry, 2012)

SELF-ESTEEM

According to Christian College (2019), Likes don't necessarily make you happier.
While receiving "likes" on social media posts may provide a fleeting high, research show that
they don't actually increase happiness. According to a 2017 British Psychological Society
study, getting likes did not improve people's self-esteem or uplift depressed moods.

While a lot of the content shared on social media appears to be harmless, it's important to
keep in mind that not everyone shares content with the best of intentions. Social media posts
can serve as excellent material for online bullies, trolls, and, worst of all, pedophiles. There
should be great caution. Your child's posts could potentially end up in the hands of the wrong
people. For instance, if you share a revealing photo in a hurry and an employer searches for it,
you might later regret it. Secondary students at ACC are given instruction on how to use social
media and technology responsibly in an effort to keep our students safe online. It's crucial that
parents set a good example for their children in their own homes. Lablante (2022) stated that,
when there is no longer any effort put forward because of a perceived difference between
oneself and another. The person will feel bad feelings, remorse, and less pride and self-esteem
if they believe they are inferior.

Social comparisons have an impact on our behavior as well as our psychological health.
Comparing oneself to others at a restaurant supper, though, may not have the same impact as
doing it online, such as on Facebook. On social media, it is simpler than in real life to create an
interesting existence or inflate specific aspects of things. Many experts have speculated that the
emergence of social media, which enables us to share information where we always present in
our best light, may have amplified inaccurate comparisons. Research demonstrates that people
socially compare themselves more when they spend more time on Facebook and Instagram.
Among other things, this social comparison is associated with higher levels of social anxiety
and worse levels of self-esteem.

ACTIVENESS

Some students struggle in school, but it's not because they're dim or don't grasp what they're
being taught. But since we already have a social media addiction.

One of the most difficult habits to break is the addiction. This type of student finds it
challenging to read and study their textbooks, complete their homework, and complete other
important schoolwork. Adverse Exposure, social media is a hub for many activities both
positive and negative. This exposes students to unsuitable material, which results in harmful
habits and other terrible vices.Through social media, some children receive unfavorable
exposure that has an impact on their personality, interpersonal interactions, and academic
achievement.

CONCLUSION

One of the greatest blessings of our day is social media and technology, which has both
benefits and drawbacks depending on how you use it.

Does that imply that as a student, you shouldn't use social media as well as technology?
Obviously not. However, as a student, you should successfully utilize it to your benefit rather
than disadvantage.

You are already using technology to your detriment and it is bad to you both now and in the
future if you fall into any of the categories of the above list of negative impacts of social media
as well as technology.

RECOMMENDATION

Our analysis of the topic leads us to the following recommendations:

1. Students should be aware that their use of technology and social media is their responsibility.
Therefore, actions may have repercussions.
2. Parents should provide instruction regarding how their kids utilized these sites and
technologies.
3. Future Researchers: Due to the limitations of this paper, we are unable to guarantee that we
will have complete information on our topic. Instead, we will advise further research on the
subjects that we were unable to address in this paper.

ABSTRACT

According to Einstein, technology is obviously exceeding humanity. Social media and

technology are both vital today. Technology may provide for things like travel,
communication, shopping, and entertainment. We can make sure that's not the only thing we
can accomplish with the aid of machines as technology develops further. Technology might be
on its rosier side, but it can also be on its gloomier side. The purpose of this study is to
determine how technology and social media platforms affect students' academic performance.
Additionally, we will leverage the findings from earlier research to enlighten and provide
direction for our study. This paper may possibly be used as a source of information in the
future.
