CHAPTER 1

THE PROBLEM AND ITS BACKGROUND

Introduction

Social media allows students to communicate with other students in a way

that allows them to exchange information and ideas. However, using social

media can also cause a negative effect on students, along with the beneficial

outcome of it. Some negative effects of social media platforms include

distracting youth, disrupting their sleep, spreading rumors, creating unrealistic

views of other people's lives, and peer pressure.Nonetheless, the risks are

still related to how much the teens are able to overcome social media. This

research will focus on the several students who have become more reliant on

social media platforms such as Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, Instagram, and

Tiktok as the new academic year gets underway. As a result, the students at

Stand Alone Senior High School are going to be the participants to know their

perspectives in conducting this study.

The term "social media" refers to the connections that can be made

between groups of individuals known as "networks". In addition, people utilize

social media to communicate with other individuals who are physically located

in different locations from them. The development of social media has made it

much simpler and more accessible, as well as more convenient, than it was in

the past. The use of social media also allows for the expression of one's

feelings about other people or things. Because of this, people are fascinated
by the ways they can share their thoughts through social media, which is

usually used to connect with other people.

We are all impacted by technological development, but Millennials are the

most so. Students must genuinely comprehend the value of social media to

be able to pursue their own goals. More advanced technology is being

developed in modern times, and additionally, it gets better every day for us to

use as we see fit. As the Stand Alone Senior High School students who range

in age from 16 to 20 will be the subject of our investigation, we will use the

aforementioned study to obtain more precise and detailed answers. In

summary, the researcher will identify how social media and student

achievement are related to one another.

Based on Swar and Hameed, (2017) Social media refers to “the websites

and online tools that facilitate interactions between users by providing them

opportunities to share information, opinions, and interest”

Individuals use social media for many reasons, including entertainment,

communication, and searching for information. Notably, adolescents and

young adults are spending an increasing amount of time on online networking

sites, e-games, texting, and other social media Twenge and Campbell, (2019).

BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

Social media can be extremely addictive — we've all told ourselves that

we'll only check our notifications, only to find ourselves mindlessly scrolling for

hours. Students especially senior high school students are widely engaged in

using social media. Social media sites play a very important role in education.
Students can also exchange information and ideas by connecting with

different individuals using social media platforms.

According to (Bekalu et al., 2019)students tend to spend more time on

social media other than for educational purposes; this tends to cause

distraction from the learning environment, affecting their academic progress.

Social networks have had a major influence on students' performance in

recent years. These networks create many opportunities and threats for

students in various fields. Addiction to social networking and its impact on

student's academic performance caused the researcher to design and

conduct this study (Azizi et al.2019).

The purpose of this research is to determine how social media usage

affects senior high school student's academic performance at Stand Alone

Senior High School and we sought to examine the effect of social media use

on learning and distraction from learning activities.

THEORETICAL FRAMEWORK

The theoretical underpinning of this study on the Behaviourism Learning

Theory, This theory is founded by John B. Watson, some suggest that Watson

is credited as behavioral psychology's founder due to being "an attractive,

strong, scientifically accomplished, and forceful speaker and an engaging

writer" who was willing to share this behavioral approach when other

psychologists were less likely to speak up. Therefore, used this theory to

determine the effects of social media on student's academic performance in

humss students.
