The Problem and Its Background

Introduction

The rapid rise of social media platforms in recent

years has revolutionized the way people communicate,
share information, and engage with one another. Social
media has become an integral part of everyday life,
particularly among the younger generation, including
students. While social media offers numerous benefits,
such as enhanced connectivity and access to a wealth of
information, concerns have been raised about its
potential impact on the academic performance of
students.

This research aims to investigate the influence of

social media on students’ academic performance,
examining both positive and negative effects.
Understanding this impact is crucial for educators,
parents, and policymakers to develop informed
strategies to harness the benefits of social media while
mitigating its adverse effects on students’ educational
outcomes.

This research aims to achieve the following objectives:

Assess the patterns and extent of social media usage
among students, including the frequency, duration, and
purposes of their engagement.

Examine the relationship between social media usage

and academic performance, considering factors such as
grades, study habits, time management, and
concentration.

Investigate the psychological impact of social media on

students, including self-esteem, stress levels, motivation,
and overall well-being.Explore the role of social media in
facilitating academic support, knowledge sharing, and
collaborative learning experiences among students.
Statement of the Problem

The problem to be addressed through this project is the

imapct of Social Media to academic performances of grade 10
students at BNHS school year 2022-2023

When we use too much social media there is a distraction

and dividend attention between social networking activities
and students academic work. Students who spend more time
on social media sites are likely to demonstrate poor academic
performances. This is because they spend more time chatting
online and making friends on social media instead of reading
books. Social Media also cause cyber bullying that leads to
depression, Fake news spreads rapidly. If you use it too much
you can not get enough sleep at night.

Specially, this study sought to answer the following:

1.How was the use of Social Media can affect the academic
performance of the respondents?
2.What are the negative imapct of social media on Grade 10
students?
3.How much time do students spend using social media?
Significance of the Study

The result of this study is significant to see the benefits and

effects to the students. This study will always be significant to
the following.

Student/s: Through the help with this study it can be shown

that what is the effect of social media to them as a students of
BNHS. And because of this, parents and teachers can think of a
good way to get the attention of students for better teaching.
Teacher/s: Through this study, teachers will be able to know
and aware of the percentage and effect of using social media in
the academic performances of their students. Teachers will
think an efficient way to catch up to their students and to
caught the attention.
Parent/s: Through this study the parents will know their
son/daughter who use social media has impact for their
children. Thus, they can think of a more effective way to make
their children’s studies successful.

Future Researcher/s: The outcome of the study is beneficial to

the future researchers. This study may be one of the basis that
a new theory in learning will use.
Scope and Delimitation of the
Study

Academic Performance of grade 10 students at Bunsuran
National High School. The respondents of the study were 38

Theoretical Framework
Relevant Theories
Medium Theory
Theory is made by Marshall McLuhan in year 1967. This is
well known with the statement “The medium is the message”
More cautiously, we could say that media create
communication spaces. McLuhan believed that people should
observe not only the media itself but “the ways in which each
new medium disrupts tradition and reshapes social life” He
believed that the social impact of the media was that they
became an extension of the human senses, and alter the social
world.

Media Dependency Theory

A systematic approach to the study of the effects of mass
media on audiences and of the interactions between media,
audiences, and social systems. It was introduced in outline by
the american communications researchers Sandra Ball-
Rokeach and Melvin Defluer in year 1976. This theory states
that the more dependent an individual is on the media for
having his or her needs fulfilled, the more important the media
will be to that person
Agenda Setting Theory

The agenda Setting Theory was formally developed by

McCombs and Shaw in year 1972 when they studied the US
Presedential Election of 1968. Agenda – Setting theory suggests
that media institutions shapes political debates by determining
what issues are must important and featuring them in news
broadcast

Review of Related Studies

This review examines the influence of social media on the

academic performance of students. It explores the positive and
negative effects of social media use and discusses various
studies conducted in this area. The analysis provides valuable
insights for students, educators, and policymakers to
understand the potential consequences of excessive social
media engagement on academic achievement.
Review of Related Literature

This study aims to shed more light on how social media

affects student achievement. As a result, the literature review
discusses pertinent studies that advance the goals of this study.
Be aware that some research studies addressing the topic are
very current. The majority of the cutting-edge features
provided by social media platforms like Facebook, Twitter, and
LinkedIn are not that old, and since the introduction of cutting-
edge features and platforms, the phenomenon of using these
media has grown. This is the most recent research finding
regarding the effect on student performance. The majority of
the chosen studies were released within the last four to five
years. Tess (2013) provides a very thorough literature review on
the significance

Conceptual Framework
We choose the social media as our independent variable
and dependent variable we have a students we got a
moderators here the Facebook and the other two is Time
appropriate and Health problems.
As we can see the social media is important and really involve
in our personal daily lives especially on the students like us.
we are just using in to make assignments and other task.. but
sadly students cannot notice the proper use of time they are
using gadgets even in class hour not paying attention to what
their teachers discussing as a result they got a poor grades
which can affect their academic performance.
Next Because of over used in social media they just suffering
from health problems, like lacking sleep, skipping meals etc.
That which can result in absences in school, procrastination
and also too much stress that will lead to depression and all of
these will have a great impact in their academic performance.

Hypothesis

Based on me and my classmate, social media has an effect

to academic performance. Students like us can easily be
addicted to social media site, and too much using of it can
affect childs studies. As we all knew, social media is a big
website with many fun things to do so many students
nowadays neglect their studies to interact with others and have
fun. But the more you use it, the more you are being devoted
to social media, and start ignoring your study
