THE EFFECT OF SOCIAL MEDIA TO THE BEHAVIOR AMONG JUNIOR HIGH

SCHOOL STUDENT IN NEW ILANG ACHIEVERS ACADEMY

CHAPTER 1

Introduction

Social media for students serves as a double-edged sword, offering both benefits

and drawbacks. On the positive side, it facilitates communication, collaboration, and

information-sharing among peers. Platforms like Facebook and Instagram allow

students to connect, exchange ideas, and create virtual communities. However,

excessive use can lead to distractions, impacting academic performance. Additionally,

the pressure to conform to online norms may contribute to stress and mental health

issues. Striking a balance is crucial; leveraging social media for educational purposes

while managing screen time helps students stay informed, engaged, and socially

connected without compromising their overall well-being and academic focus. For

students, social media is a two-edged sword with advantages and disadvantages.

Positively, it makes peer-to-peer communication, cooperation, and information sharing

easier.
In USA, there are 4.54 billion Internet users, and 3.8 billion people use social

media all around the world (We are social, 2020). For a recent report, Anderson and

Jiang (2019) revealed that almost every adolescent (13-17 years old) living in the USA

had their own smartphone and internet access (95%) while 89% of them used Internet

either several times or constantly (45%) during a day. For instance, in order to attend

social activities, students must cut off their time to study, read, and do homework. More

specifically, today, due to the attractive nature of most social media tools, students

prefer to devote much more time to any media instead of academic activities (Lau,

2017).

Meanwhile in the Philippines in social media has become integral to people’s

lives; revolutionizing communication and providing opportunities to learn about societal

trends and issues. This study aimed to examine the influence of social media on the

academic performance of junior high school students in Marawi City, Lanao Del Sur,

Philippines during the 2022-2023 academic year. It employed a descriptive-correlational

research approach to explore the impact of social media usage on academic

socialization, entertainment, and informative aspects and its association with academic

performance. The study used simple random sampling to select junior high school

students from the target school. The findings indicated that students utilized social

media for various purposes, including conducting research, problem-solving, peer

interaction, curriculum understanding, and collaborative learning. Participants agreed

that social media positively influenced their academic, socialization, entertainment, and

informative experiences. However, no significant correlation was found between social

media usage and academic performance. As a result, educators encourage the

responsible use of social media in students’ learning processes. At the same time,

school administrators should support teachers in integrating social media into their

instructional approaches and classroom activities.
