QurꜤānic Principles for Engaging the Dhikr


َْ ً َ ْ َ ٓ َ ْ َ َ ُ َّ َ َ َّ ُ َ َ َّ َ ُ َ
‫﴾ َّما ل ُهم بِهِ م ِْن عِل ٍم َولا لآبَائ ِ ِه ْم كبُ َرت كل َِمة تخ ُر ُج م ِْن‬18:4﴿ ‫ّلل َول ًدا‬ ‫وينذِر ٱلذِين قالوا ٱتخذ ٱ‬
ً َ ‫َ ْ َ َٰ ْ َ ُ ُ َ ا‬
‫ الكهف‬- ﴾18:5﴿ ‫أفوهِ ِهم إِن يقولون إَِّل ك ِذبا‬

Warning those who claim that Allahh has taken an intermediary as a son (18:4)
They have no knowledge about him (īssā), and neither did their forefathers.
Conceited is that word that comes out of their mouths. Everything they say is
but lies (18:5)
ْ َ ْ ُ ُّ َ ْ ُ َ َٰ َ ْ َ َ ُ ْ ُ ْ ْ ْ َ َ َ ُ َ َ َ ْ َ َ
ُ ْ َ ْ ٓ َ ْ ْ َ َٰ َ
َ‫ك ُف ُل َم ْريَ َم َوما‬ ‫ب نوحِيهِ إِليك وما كنت لدي ِهم إِذ يلقون أقلمهم أيهم ي‬ ِ ‫ذل ِك مِن أنباءِ ٱلغي‬
َ َْ ْ َ َ ُ
‫ آل عمران‬- ﴾3:44﴿ ‫نت ل َدي ْ ِه ْم إِذ يخ َت ِص ُمون‬ ‫ك‬

That (i.e., the story of Maryam and Ɛīssā and Zakariya and Yaḥya recounted in this
sūrah) is an account of the truth that is (currently) beyond disclosure (to
anyone at the time of the revelation of this sūrah), and that we enjoin (as
guidance in your prophetic career) upon you (Muḥammad)… (3:44)

ُ َ ْ ُ َ ْ َ ُ َ َ َّ َّ َ ُ َّ َّ َ ْ َ َ َ ْ ُ َ َ ْ َ ُ َ َ َٰ َ ‫ا‬
َٰ
‫ آل‬- ﴾3:62﴿ ‫إِن هذا لهو ٱلقصص ٱْلق وما مِن إِل ٍه إِلا ٱّلل وِإن ٱّلل لهو ٱلع ِزيز ٱلحكِيم‬

‫عمران‬

These are the true stories, and there is no deity other than Allahh, and Allahh
is the mighty, the source of discernment.
َ ُ ُ ْ َ ََ ْ ََُْ َ َ َ ٓ َ َ َ َ َ ْ ُ َ َّ َ َ ُ َ َ ْ ُ ُ َّ َ ْ َ َ ْ َ َ
َٰ َ
‫ولئِن أتيت ٱلذِين أوتوا ٱلكِتب بِك ِل ءاي ٍة ما تبِعوا ق ِبلتك وما أنت بِتاب ِ ٍع ق ِبلتهم وما بعضهم بِتاب ِ ٍع‬
َ‫لظلمي‬ َٰ ‫ۢ َ ْ َ َ ٓ َ َ َ ْ ْ ا َ ً ا َ ا‬ ُ َ َٓ ْ َ َ ْ َ‫ا‬ ََ َْ ََْ
ِِ ‫ٱ‬ ‫ن‬ ‫م‬ ‫ل‬ ‫ا‬‫ذ‬‫إ‬ ‫ك‬
ِ ِ ِ ِ ِ ‫ن‬‫إ‬ ‫م‬ ‫ل‬ ‫ع‬ ‫ل‬ ‫ٱ‬ ‫ِن‬ ‫م‬ ‫ك‬ ‫ء‬ ‫ا‬‫ج‬ ‫ا‬‫م‬ ‫د‬
ِ ‫ع‬ ‫ب‬ ‫ِن‬
‫م‬ ‫م‬ ‫ه‬ ‫ء‬‫ا‬‫و‬ ‫ه‬ ‫أ‬ ‫ت‬‫ع‬ ‫ب‬‫ت‬‫ٱ‬ ‫ن‬ ِ ِ ‫ق ِبلة بع ٍض ول‬
‫ئ‬
‫) – البقرة‬2:145(

…And if you follow their fancy after what has come to you of the
evidence-based knowledge, then you are certainly among the
transgressors!

Aya 19:1 – 19:15 from Sūrah Maryam

Kāf. Hā. Yā. Ɛayn. Sohd ﴾19:1﴿ ‫هيع ٓص‬ ٓ ‫ٓك‬


َ َ َ َْ ْ
Mentioning the mercy of your lord towards his ‫ت َربِك عبْ َدهُ َزك ِر َّيا‬ ِ ‫ذِك ُر َرحم‬
wayfarer Zakaryia,
﴾19:2﴿
َ ً َ ُ َّ َ َٰ َ َ ْ
When he called out to his lord, in a veiled ﴾19:3﴿ ‫اء خ ِف ًّيا‬ ‫إِذ نادى ربه ن ِد‬
supplication.
ْ ْ َ َ َ َ
He said: “The majority (of my community) have ‫ب إِنِى َوه َن ٱل َعظ ُم مِنِى‬
ِ ‫قال ر‬
weakened me, and the head is ablaze with hoariness ُ َ ْ َ َ ً ْ َ ُ ْ َّ َ َ َ ْ َ
(i.e., shock at what I have seen from the community), ‫وٱشتعل ٱلرأس شيبا ولم أكن‬
َ َ َ َٓ ُ
and in my calling upon you, my lord, I have not been ﴾19:4﴿ ‫ب ش ِق ًّيا‬ ِ ‫بِدعائِك ر‬
disconnected from you.
ٓ ْ ُ ْ
“And I am afraid, after me, of those who appoint ‫ت ٱل َم َوَٰل ِ َى مِن َو َراءِى‬ ‫َوِإنِى خِف‬
themselves as patrons over others, and my
‫ب لِى مِن‬ْ ‫َو َكانَت ٱ ْم َرأَتى ع َاق ًِرا َف َه‬
subordinate woman has been pinned down, and thus ِ ِ
َ َّ
grant me from your knowledge (someone who could ﴾19:5﴿ ‫ل ُدنك َول ًِّيا‬
be) a protégé,
َ ‫ث م ِْن َءال َي ْع ُق‬ ُ ََ ُ َ
“Who would inherit me and inherit from the ‫وب‬ ِ ‫ي ِرثنِى وي ِر‬
followers of YaƐqūb. And, my lord, make him
﴾19:6﴿ ‫ض ًّيا‬ ِ ‫ب َر‬ َ ُْ َ ْ َ
someone who pleases you!” ِ ‫وٱجعله ر‬
َُ ُ َّ ٓ َ َ
“O Zakaryia! We give you the glad tidings of a ‫ي َٰ َزك ِر َّيا إِنا نبَ ِش ُر َك بِغل َٰ ٍم ٱ ْس ُم ُهۥ‬
ُ َ َّ ْ َ َ ْ َ
‫يح َي َٰى ل ْم نج َعل ل ُهۥ مِن قبْل َس ِم ًّيا‬
‘Ghulām’ (a young man), whose name is ‘Yahya’ (to
live on)!” We have never before given to anyone else
his elevation. ﴾19:7﴿
َ َ َ ُ ُ ُ َّ َ َ ‫قَ َال‬
He said: “My lord! How would I have a ‘Ghulām’ (a ِ ‫ب أن َٰى يَكون لِى غل َٰ ٌم َوكان‬
‫ت‬ ِ ‫ر‬
young man) while my subordinate woman has been ْ
َ‫ت م َِن ٱلكِبر‬ ُ ‫ٱ ْم َرأَتى عَاق ًِرا َو َق ْد بَل ْغ‬
َ
pinned down, and after I have reached an escalation ِ ِ
of excessive arrogance from the elders.” ﴾19:8﴿ ‫ِعت ِ ًّيا‬

َ َ ُ َ َ َ َ َ َ َ َ
He (Allahh) said: “That is (exactly) how!” Your lord ‫قال كذَٰل ِك قال َر ُّبك ه َو عَل َّى هي ِ ٌن‬
َ ُ َ َ ُ َ َ َْ َ َ
‫َوق ْد خلق ُتك مِن قبْل َول ْم تك شيْ ًـا‬
said: “It is easy for me, and I had created you before,
while you were yet to be willed into existence!”
﴾19:9﴿
َ َ َ ً ْ ‫قَ َال َرب ٱ‬
He said: “My lord! Designate a sign for me!” He said: ‫ج َعل ل ِ ٓى َءايَة قال َء َاي ُتك‬ ِ
“Your sign is to remain silent for three straight َ
ًّ‫ث ل َيال َسويا‬َ َٰ َ َ َّ َ َ ُ َّ َ
َ
nights!” ِ ٍ ‫ألا تكل ِم ٱلناس ثل‬

َْ ْ َ َْ ََ َ َ َ َ
And thus, he came out against his community, out of ‫اب‬ ِ ‫فخرج عل َٰى قو ِمهِۦ مِن ٱل ِمحر‬
(or from) the tabernacle! ْ ُ ُ َ َ ْ َْ َ ََْ
ً‫ك َرة‬
And then, he (Allahh) enjoined upon them to submit ‫فأوحى إِلي ِهم أن سبِحوا ب‬
to the way (in prayer), mornings and evenings. ﴾19:11﴿ ‫َو َعشِ ًّيا‬
َ ُ َ َٰ َ ْ ُ َٰ َ ْ َ َٰ َ
“O Yahya! Take the message of the scripture firmly!” ‫ب بِق َّو ٍة َو َءاتيْ َنَٰ ُه‬ ‫ييحيى خ ِذ ٱلكِت‬
ْ ْ
﴾19:12﴿ ‫ٱلحُك َم َصب ِ ًّيا‬
And we gave him the opportunity to learn the
linguistic discernment as a young boy,
َ َ َ َ َّ َّ ً
And a melodic weeping in reciting scripture (like the ‫َو َح َنانا مِن ل ُدنا َو َزك َٰو ًة َوكان ت ِق ًّيا‬
bleats of a mother she-camel calling for her calf)
﴾19:13﴿
from our knowledge, and purification, and he was
disciplined,
ُ َ ْ َ َ ْ َ َٰ َ ًّ َ َ
And constancy of faith through his two parents, and ‫ارا َع ِص ًّيا‬
ً ‫كن َج َّب‬ ‫وبرا بِول ِديهِ ولم ي‬
he was not overbearing nor disobedient,
﴾19:14﴿
And exclusivity is given to him on the day he was ُ ‫َو َس َل َٰ ٌم َعلَيْهِ يَ ْو َم ُول َِد َويَ ْو َم َي ُم‬
‫وت‬
ُ
﴾19:15﴿ ‫َويَ ْو َم ُيبْ َعث َح ًّيا‬
born, on the day he dies, and on the day he is raised
to life!

‫‪Six Key Abrahamic Locution Expressions‬‬

‫ال َع ْ‬
‫ظم‪From Lissan Al-3arab: It means the majority of a people :‬‬

‫الموالي‪َ :‬مولَى ‪Means “Patron” or “Benefactor” or “Superior” – Plural of‬‬


‫ُ‬ ‫َّ‬ ‫َ‬ ‫ْ‬ ‫َ‬ ‫َٰ‬ ‫َ َ َ َّ ْ َ ْ َ ُ ٓ َ َّ َّ َ َ ْ َ َٰ ُ ْ ْ َ ْ َ ْ َ‬
‫صير ﴿‪ - ﴾8:40‬الأنفال‬ ‫وِإن تولوا فٱعلموا أن ٱّلل مولىكم ن ِعم ٱلمولى ون ِعم ٱلن ِ‬ ‫‪-‬‬
‫ْ‬ ‫َّ ُ َ َ ُ َ ْ ْ َ‬ ‫َْ‬
‫ير ﴿‪ - ﴾22:78‬الأنفال‬ ‫ص ُ‬‫ص ُموا ب ِٱّللِ ه َو م ْولىَٰك ْم فن ِع َم ٱل َم ْول َٰى َون ِع َم ٱ َّلن ِ‬
‫َوٱعت ِ‬ ‫‪-‬‬

‫نص ُرون ﴿‪ - ﴾44:41‬الدخان‬ ‫يوم لا يغنِى مولى عن مولى شيـا ولا هم ي‬ ‫‪-‬‬
‫ْ‬ ‫ُ‬ ‫َ َٰ َ َ َّ َّ َ َ ْ َ َّ َ َ َ ُ َ َ َّ ْ َ َٰ َ َ َ ْ َ َٰ َ‬
‫ذل ِك بِأن ٱّلل مولى ٱلذِين ءامنوا وأن ٱلكفِرِين لا مولى لهم ﴿‪ - ﴾47:11‬محمد‬ ‫‪-‬‬
‫سب َ‬ ‫ْ ََ َ ْ ْ ُ َ ْ ُ ْ َ‬ ‫َ‬ ‫ُ ُّ َ َّ‬
‫ين ﴿‪ - ﴾6:62‬الانعام‬ ‫ث َّم ُرد ٓوا إِلى ٱّللِ َم ْولى َٰ ُه ُم ٱلحَ ِق ألا ل ُه ٱلحُك ُم َوه َو أس َرع ٱلحَٰ ِِ‬ ‫‪-‬‬
‫َ ُ َْ َ‬ ‫َ َّ َ ْ‬ ‫ْ‬ ‫َ‬ ‫َّ ٓ َ ْ َ َ ْ ُّ َ َّ‬ ‫ُ َ َ ُ ُ ُّ َ ْ‬
‫ت َو ُرد ٓوا إِلى ٱّللِ َم ْولى َٰ ُه ُم ٱلحَ ِق َوضل عن ُهم َّما كانوا َيفت ُرون ﴿‪- ﴾10:30‬‬ ‫ه َنال ِك تبْلوا كل نف ٍس ما أسلف‬ ‫‪-‬‬
‫يونس‬
‫ير ﴿‪ - ﴾22:13‬هود‬ ‫ض ُّر ُه ٓۥ أَقْ َر ُب مِن َّن ْفعِهِۦ لَبئْ َس ٱل ْ َم ْول َ َٰى َولَبئْ َس ٱل ْ َعشِ ُ‬
‫َ ْ ُ ََ َ‬
‫‪ -‬يدعوا لمن‬
‫ِ‬ ‫ِ‬
‫ْ‬ ‫ْ‬ ‫َ َ ُ‬ ‫ْ‬
‫ُ ْ ْ َ ٌ َ َ َ َّ َ َ َ ُ َ َ َٰ ُ‬ ‫َ ْ َ ْ َ ُ‬
‫ص ُ‬
‫ير‬ ‫ار ه َِى م ْولىَٰك ْم َوبِئ َس ٱل َم ِ‬
‫ك ُم ٱ َّلن ُ‬ ‫‪ -‬فٱل َي ْو َم لا يُؤخذ مِنكم ف ِدية ولا مِن ٱلذِين كفروا مأوى‬
‫﴿‪ - ﴾57:15‬الحديد‬

‫سم َّياً‪:‬‬
‫َ‬
‫س َم َو ‪which means to rise up, or to elevate‬‬
‫من َ‬ ‫‪-‬‬
‫‪and has nothing to do with giving someone else the same name.‬‬ ‫‪-‬‬
‫ي‬
‫س َم َ‬
‫‪َ is not an Arabic root‬‬ ‫‪-‬‬
‫‪Some books of Tafseer recognized this problem and said that it‬‬ ‫‪-‬‬
‫”‪must mean “someone like him‬‬

‫عاقر‪Fixed down, Pinned down :‬‬


‫‪َ -‬ف َع َق ُروا ٱ َّلناقَ َة َو َع َت ْوا َع ْن أَ ْمر َربه ْم َو َقالُوا َي َٰ َصَٰل ُِح ٱئْت ِ َنا ب َما تَعِ ُدنَا ٓ إن ُك َ‬
‫نت م َِن ٱل ْ ُم ْر َسل َ‬
‫ِين‬ ‫ِ‬ ‫ِ‬ ‫ِ ِِ‬
‫﴿‪ - ﴾7:77‬الأعراف‬
‫َ ُ ْ َ َ َٰ َ َ َ َّ َ َٰ َ َ ْ ٌ َ ْ ُ َ ْ ُ‬ ‫وها َف َق َال َت َم َّت ُ‬
‫َََُ َ‬
‫وب ﴿‪ - ﴾11:65‬هود‬
‫ٍ‬ ‫ذ‬ ‫ك‬ ‫م‬ ‫ر‬ ‫ي‬‫غ‬ ‫د‬ ‫ع‬ ‫و‬ ‫ِك‬ ‫ل‬ ‫ذ‬ ‫م‬

‫‪ -‬فعقروها فأصبحوا ن ِدمِين ﴿‪ - ﴾26:157‬الشعراء‬
‫َ‬ ‫َ‬ ‫َ‬ ‫َ َ َّ ُ ُ َ َ َ َ‬
‫وه ف َعق ُروها ف َد ْم َد َم َعليْ ِه ْم َر ُّب ُهم بِذۢنب ِ ِه ْم ف َس َّوى َٰ َها ﴿‪ - ﴾91:14‬الشمس‬ ‫‪ -‬فكذب‬

‫عقيم‪This is the word used in the Quran for “barren” or “infertile” :‬‬
‫ِيم قَد ٌ‬
‫ِير ﴿‪ - ﴾42:50‬الشورى‬ ‫يما إِنَّ ُهۥ َعل ٌ‬ ‫‪ -‬أَ ْو يُ َزو ُج ُه ْم ُذ ْك َرانًا َو َِإنَٰ ًثا َويَ ْ‬
‫ج َع ُل َمن ي َ َشا ٓ ُء َع ِق ً‬
‫ِ‬
‫َ‬ ‫ٌ‬ ‫ُ‬ ‫َ‬ ‫ْ‬ ‫َ َّ َ َ َّ ْ َ ْ َ َ َ َ َ‬ ‫ُ‬ ‫َ‬
‫َْ ُ‬ ‫ََََْ‬
‫ٌ‬
‫ت ٱمرأتهۥ فِى صر ٍة فصكت وجهها وقالت عجوز ع ِقيم ﴿‪ - ﴾51:29‬الذاريات‬ ‫‪ -‬فأقبل ِ‬

‫عت َّياً‪:‬‬
‫‪ -‬تعريف و معنى عتى فى قاموس لسان العرب‪From Lissan Al-3arab .‬‬
‫ً ْ ْ‬ ‫ُ ً‬ ‫َ‬
‫وجاو َز الحَ َّد ‪Excessively Conceited & Arrogant‬‬ ‫َ‬ ‫اس َتكبَ َر‬‫‪ -‬ع َتا َي ْع ُتو ع ُتوا و ِعتِيا ‪:‬‬
‫الع ُت ُّو‪ :‬التجبُّر والتكبُّر‪Oppression and Conceit and arrogance .‬‬ ‫ُ‬ ‫‪-‬‬
‫َ‬ ‫ُ‬ ‫ُ ُ‬ ‫َ‬ ‫ُّ ُ‬
‫الم َت َم ِرد الذي لا يقبل موعِظة‪Excessively .‬‬ ‫الدخو ِل فى الفساد‬ ‫‪ -‬والعاتى‪ :‬الشديد‬
‫‪rebellious & Corrupt who does not accept advice‬‬
‫عبد َعتا َ‬ ‫العبد ٌ‬ ‫ُ‬ ‫ْ‬
‫وطغى‬ ‫‪ -‬وفى الحديث‪ :‬بِئ َس‬

‫َب َّرا ً بوالديه‬


ُ ‫وه إنَّ ُهۥ ُه َو ٱلْبَ ُّر ٱ َّلرح‬
‫ الطور‬- ﴾52:28﴿ ‫ِيم‬ ُ ُ ْ َ َُْ َّ ُ َّ
ِ ‫ إِنا كنا مِن قبل ندع‬-
- We used to supplicate to him. He is the source of constancy, the merciful.
َّ َ ْ ُّ َ ْ ُ َ َ ُ ٓ َ َ َٰ َ َ َّ َ َ َ َ ْ ُ ْ َ َ ْ َْ ْ ُ َ َ َ َّ َّ
﴾98:6﴿ ِ‫ب وٱلمش ِرك ِين فِى نارِ جهنم خلِدِين فِيها أولئِك هم شر ٱلب ِرية‬ َٰ
ِ ‫ إِن ٱلذِين كفروا مِن أه ِل ٱلكِت‬-
‫ البينة‬-
- Indeed those who rejected from among the cohorts of the Kitaab, and those
who associate with Allahh, (are) in the fire (i.e., the man-made illumination) of
Jahannam. In it they are in their stupor. Those are the worst of those
associated with the source of constancy (i.e., Allahh)
ْ َ ُ َ َ ُ َٰ َ َٰ َّ ُ َ ُ َ َ َ َّ َّ
‫ البينة‬- ﴾98:7﴿ ِ‫ت أولئِك ه ْم خيْ ُر ٱلبَ ِر َّية‬ِ ‫امنوا َوع ِملوا ٱلصل ِح‬ ‫ إِن ٱلذِين ء‬-
َْ ُ َ َ
ْ َ ُ َّ ‫َ ْ َ ْ ْ َ َٰ ُ َ َٰ َ َ ٓ َ ً َّ َى‬ َْ َ ‫ َج َزآ ُؤ ُه ْم ع‬-
ُ َٰ‫ِند َربه ْم َج َّن‬
‫ّلل عن ُه ْم َو َرضوا عن ُه‬ ِ ‫ت َع ْد ٍن تجرِى مِن تحت ِها ٱلأنهر خلِدِين فِيها أبدا ر‬
‫ض ٱ‬ ِِ
َ َ َ
‫ البينة‬- ﴾98:8﴿ ‫ذَٰل ِك ل َِم ْن خ ِش َى َر َّب ُهۥ‬
- Indeed those who believe and toil on the scripture in accordance with the
divine lexicon: Those are the best of those associated with the source of
constancy (i.e., Allahh). Their recompense from their lord are persistent
‘Jannaat’ beneath which ‘rivers flow’. In it they stay in their stupor
permanently. Allahh is pleased with them, and they are pleased with him. That
(recompense) is for whoever is observant of his lord!

Aya 31:12 – 31:34 from Sūrah Luqmān (Sūrah 31)


َّ ُ ْ َ َ ْ ْ ُْ َ ََ
And we have allowed Luqmān the ‘Ḥikmah’ (the instruments of
‫َولق ْد َءاتيْ َنا لق َم َٰ َن ٱلحِك َمة أ ِن ٱشك ْر ِّللِ َو َمن‬
ُ ْ َ َّ َ ُ ْ َ
extracting evidence), that you should direct yourself to
َ َّ ‫ك َف َر فَإ َّن ٱ‬
‫ّلل‬
َ
‫سهِۦ َو َمن‬
ْ
ِ ‫يشك ْر فإِن َما يشك ُر ل َِنف‬
communicate with Allahh alone, for whoever does so, he does
ِ
ٌ ‫َغن ٌّى َحم‬
so for his own benefit, but whoever rejects, then (know) that
Allahh is not in need (of anything, including such ﴾31:12﴿ ‫ِيد‬ ِ
communication), (and Allahh is) praisweworthy.
ْ ُْ َ َ ُ ُ ُْ َ َ ْ
And when Luqmān said to his son, as he instructed him: “O my
‫َوِإذ قال لق َم َٰ ُن ل ِٱبْنِهِۦ َوه َو يَعِظ ُهۥ ي َٰ ُب َن َّى لا تش ِرك‬
ٌ ‫لش ْر َك لَ ُظلْ ٌم َعظ‬
son! Do not associate with Allahh! Associating with Allahh is a
َّ َّ
prevalent transgression!” ﴾31:13﴿ ‫ِيم‬ ِ ‫ب ِٱّللِ إِن ٱ‬
ْ َ ْ ُ َََْ ْ
And we have advised the directly guidable man to mind his
‫نس َن ب ِ َوَٰل َِديْهِ حملت ُه أ ُّم ُهۥ َوه ًنا عَل َٰى َوه ٍن‬َٰ َ ‫َو َو َّصيْ َنا ٱل ِإ‬
َ َ ُ ْ َ َْ َ ُ َ
parents - His mother carries him in a state of weakness despite
weakness, and his separation after two years – that “you ‫امي ِن أ ِن ٱشك ْر لِى َول َِوَٰل َِديْك إِل َّى‬ ‫َوف ِصَٰل ُهۥ فِى ع‬
should direct yourself in communication to me and to your
ُ ‫ص‬ ْ
parents. To me shall be the eventual destination! ﴾31:14﴿ ‫ير‬ ِ ‫ٱل َم‬
َ َ َ َْ َ َ ْ ُ َ َ َ َ َ َ َٰ َ
“And if they (your parents) press you to associate with me that
‫َوِإن جهداك على أن تش ِرك بِى ما ليس لك بِهِۦ‬
ُ ََ ْ
of which you have no evidence-based knowledge, then do not
ً ْ
obey them! But still, keep company with them in this world in ‫عِل ٌم فلا ت ِط ْع ُه َما َو َصاحِبْ ُه َما ف ِى ٱ ُّلدن َيا َم ْع ُروفا‬
ُ ْ َ َ َّ ُ َ َ َ َ ْ َ َ َ ْ َّ َ
accordance with the (divinely prescribed) norms, and follow
the way of those who return to me. Then to me you will (all) ‫ج ُعك ْم‬ ِ ‫وٱتبِع سبِيل من أناب إِل َّى ثم إِل َّى مر‬
َ ُ َ ُ ُ َ ُ ُ ََُ
﴾31:15﴿ ‫نت ْم ت ْع َملون‬
return for resuming your mission, and then I will inform you in
accordance with what you have been toiling (on the ‫فأنبِئكم بِما ك‬
scripture).”
ُ َ َ َ َ َ ْ ُ َ ٓ َّ َ
(Luqmān continued:) “O my son! If anything of the weight of a
‫ي َٰ ُب َن َّى إِن َها إِن تك مِثقال َح َّب ٍة م ِْن خ ْرد ٍل ف َتكن‬
mustard seed, and even if it were in the way of (those whose
َ‫ت بها‬ َْ َْْ ْ َ ِ َٰ ‫لس َم َٰ َو‬ َّ ‫خ َرة أَ ْو فى ٱ‬ْ َ
cores are impenetrable like) a boulder or in the way of the
ِ ِ ‫ت أو فِى ٱلأر ِض يأ‬ ِ ٍ ‫فِى ص‬
ٌ ‫يف َخب‬ ٌ َ َ َّ َّ ُ َّ
layers of understanding with the scripture, (know that) Allah
will bring it forth. Surely Allah is most subtle, all-aware. ﴾31:16﴿ ‫ير‬ ِ ‫ٱّلل إِن ٱّلل ل ِط‬
ْ ْ ْ َ َ َّ ‫َي َٰ ُب َن َّى أَق ِم ٱ‬
“O my son! Establish ‘Salaat’ and enjoin using the (divinely
‫وف َوٱن َه َع ِن‬ ْ
ِ ‫لصل َٰوة َوأ ُم ْر ب ِٱل َمع ُر‬ ِ
prescribed) norms, and admonish against the abominable, and
َ َ َّ َ َ ٓ َ َ ُْ
be patient despite that which inflicts you. Indeed, that is ‫صب ِ ْر عَل َٰى َما أ َصابَك إِن ذَٰل ِك م ِْن َع ْز ِم‬ ْ ‫نكر َوٱ‬
ِ ‫ٱلم‬
ُ ‫ٱل ْ ُأ‬
among the (many) firm commands to deal with (your) affairs.
﴾31:17﴿ ‫ور‬ ِ ‫م‬
َْ ْ َ َ َّ ‫َولَا تُ َصع ِْر َخ َّد َك ل‬
“And do not turn your cheek (upward,) in disrespect (or
‫اس َولا ت ْم ِش فِى ٱلأر ِض‬ ِ ‫ِلن‬
ُ َ َ ْ ُ َّ ُ ُّ ُ َ َ َّ َّ ً َ َ
flippancy) toward people, and do not walk about, expounding
on the (interpretation of the) scripture, boastfully claiming ﴾31:18﴿ ‫ور‬ ٍ ‫ال ف‬
‫خ‬ ٍ ‫مرحا إِن ٱّلل لا يحِب كل مخت‬
superiority (over them). Indeed, Allahh’s love is not extended
to any such boastful arrogant person!
َّ َ ْ ُ ْ َ ْ ْ
“And have a purpose in your actions, and lower your voice.
‫ص ْد فِى َمشيِك َوٱغضض مِن َص ْوت ِك إِن‬ِ ‫َوٱق‬
Indeed, the most abominable of voice is the (group) braying of
ْ ُ ْ َ َ َ ْ َْ َ َ َ
the donkeys.” ﴾31:19﴿ ‫ت ٱلحَ ِمير‬ ِ َٰ ‫أنكر ٱلأصو‬
‫ت لصو‬

َِٰ ‫لس َم َٰ َو‬


َّ ‫كم َّما فى ٱ‬ ُ َ َ َّ َ َ َّ َّ َ ْ َ َ ْ َ َ
Have you not (yet) realized that Allahh made subservient to
‫ت َو َما‬ ِ ‫ألم تروا أن ٱّلل سخر ل‬
ً َ َ َ ً َ َٰ َ ُ َ َ ْ ُ ْ َ َ َ َ ْ َ َ ْ َ ْ
you all that is in the heavens and the earth, and that he
lavished his favors upon you, exposed and concealed. And (yet) ‫فِى ٱلأر ِض وأسبغ عليكم ن ِعمهۥ ظ ِهرة وباطِنة‬
َ ْ َ َّ ُ َ ُ َ
‫جَٰدِل فِى ٱّللِ بِغيْ ِر عِل ٍم َولا‬
among people are some who argue about the way of Allahh,
without evidence-based knowledge, and without direct ‫اس من ي‬ ِ ‫َوم َِن ٱ َّلن‬
guidance, and without an illuminating scripture.
﴾31:20﴿ ‫ِير‬ ‫ن‬‫م‬ُّ ‫ُه ًدى َولَا ك َِتَٰب‬
ٍ ٍ
َّ َ ْ ُ َ َّ َ َ
َ ‫ِيل ل َ ُه ُم ٱتَّب ُعوا َما أ‬
ٓ َ َ َ
And when they are told: “Follow what Allahh has made
‫ّلل قالوا بَل نتب ِ ُع َما‬ ُ ‫نزل ٱ‬
ِ ‫وِإذا ق‬
accessible!”, they say: “Nay! We follow only that which we
ُ َّ َ َ َ ٓ َ ٓ َ َ َ
have found our forefathers following!” What if Shayṭān was ‫َو َج ْدنا َعليْهِ َءابَا َءنا أ َول ْو كان ٱلشيْ َطَٰ ُن يَ ْد ُعوه ْم‬
inviting them to the punishment of the increasing fomentation
َّ َ َ َ
(away from divine guidance)? ﴾31:21﴿ ‫ِير‬ ِ ‫اب ٱلسع‬ ِ ‫إِل َٰى عذ‬
ََ ْ ُ ُ َّ َ ْ ‫َو َمن ي ُ ْسل ِْم َو‬
And whoever surrenders his orientation exclusively towards
‫ج َه ُه ٓۥ إِلى ٱّللِ َوه َو محس ٌِن فق ِد‬
ُ ‫ك بٱل ْ ُع ْر َوة ِ ٱل ْ ُوثْ َق َٰى َوِإلَى ٱ َّّللِ َعَٰق َِب ُة ٱل ْ ُأ‬
Allahh while seeking insight, he has certainly grasped the
َ َ َْْ
firmest grip. And with Allah rests the outcome of all affairs. ‫ور‬
ِ ‫م‬ ِ ‫ٱستمس‬
﴾31:22﴿
َ
ْ َ َ ُُٓ ُ َ ُ ْ ْ َ َ َ َََ ََ
But whoever rejects, let not his rejection sadden you. To us
‫ج ُع ُه ْم‬ ِ ‫ومن كفر فلا يحزنك كفرهۥ إِليْنا مر‬
ٌ َ َ َّ َّ ٓ ُ َ َ ُ ُ َ ُ َ
shall be their return for resuming their mission, and we shall
ُ ُّ ِ ‫ِيم ب َذ‬
ِ‫ات ٱلصدور‬ ِ ‫فننبِئهم بِما ع ِملوا إِن ٱّلل عل‬
inform them in accordance with how they toiled. Indeed,
Allahh teaches (or instructs directly to your nafs) based on that
which is forwarded. ﴾31:23﴿
َ َ َ َٰ َ ْ ُ ُّ َ ْ َ َّ ُ ً َ ْ ُ ُ َ ُ
We shall delay them for a little while, and then we shall entrap
‫ِيظ‬ٍ ‫اب غل‬ ٍ ‫نمت ِعهم قل ِيلا ثم نضطرهم إِلى عذ‬
them into a harsh punishment.
﴾31:24﴿
َّ‫ت َوٱل ْ َأ ْر َض ل َ َي ُقولُن‬ َ َ َّ َ َ َ َّ َْ َ
And if you ask them ‘who created the layers of understanding
ِ َٰ ‫َولئِن َسألتهم من خلق ٱلسمَٰو‬
ْ ُ َ
with the scripture’, they say: “Allahh!” Say: “Praise is due to
َ َ َ ُ َ ْ َ ْ َّ ْ ُ ُ َّ
Allahh!” Nay, but most of them do not possess evidence-based ‫ّلل ق ِل ٱلحَ ْم ُد ِّللِ بَل أكث ُره ْم لا َي ْعل ُمون‬ ‫ٱ‬
knowledge.
﴾31:25﴿
ْ
َ ُ َ َّ َّ َ ْ َ َّ ‫ِ َّّللِ َما فى ٱ‬
To Allahh belongs the layers of understanding with the
‫ّلل ه َو ٱلغنِ ُّى‬ ‫ت َوٱلأ ْر ِض إِن ٱ‬ ِ َٰ ‫لسم َٰ َو‬ ِ
ُ ‫ٱلْحَم‬
scripture. Indeed Aallahh is the one without needs (for any of
it), the praiseworthy! ﴾31:26﴿ ‫يد‬ ِ
ْ َ
ْ ‫ج َرة أقْ َل َٰ ٌم َوٱل َب‬ َ َ َ ْ َ
َّ َ
And if all the argumentative groups (would argue) about the
‫ح ُر َي ُم ُّدهُۥ‬ ْ
ٍ ‫َول ْو أن َما فِى ٱلأر ِض مِن ش‬
َّ َّ ُ َٰ َ َ ْ َ َ َّ ُ ْ َ ُ َ ْ َ
scripture (,writing as if they) were pens, and if the sea (of
confusion they create) supplies it (as if it were ink for their ‫ت ٱّللِ إِن‬ ‫ِم ۢن َب ْع ِده ِۦ سبعة أبح ٍر ما نفِدت كل ِم‬
ٌ ‫ّلل َعز‬ َ َّ ‫ٱ‬
pens), (and even if) beyond the first sea, (there were) seven
﴾31:27﴿ ‫ِيم‬ ٌ ‫يز َحك‬
seas, still Allahh’s words (or accepted supplications) are not ِ
exhausted. Indeed Allahh is unassailable, a supreme source of
linguistic discernment.
َّ ْ َ َّ ُ ُ َ ُ ُ ْ َ
Your creation and your revivification are not but like those of a
‫َّما خلقك ْم َولا َب ْعثك ْم إِلا ك َنف ٍس َوَٰح َِدةٍ إِن‬
single ‘Nafs’. Indeed, Allahh is provider of hearing, provider of
acuity. ﴾31:28﴿ ‫ير‬ ٌ ‫ص‬ ِ َ‫يع ب‬ َ َّ ‫ٱ‬
ٌ ‫ّلل َس ِم‬

Have you not observed that Allahh fits the night into the َ ‫ّلل يُول ُِج ٱلَّيْ َل فى ٱ َّلن َهار َويُول ُِج ٱ َّلن َه‬
‫ار‬ َ َّ ‫َأل َ ْم تَ َر أَ َّن ٱ‬
ِ ِ
daylight, and fits the daylight into the night, and that he made ََ َ ٓ ْ َ ٌّ ُ َ َ ْ َ َ ْ َّ َّ َّ
subservient the sun (i.e., the messengers) and the moon (i.e., ‫فِى ٱليْ ِل َو َسخ َر ٱلشمس وٱلقم َر كل يجرِى إِلى أج ٍل‬
ٌ ‫ون َخب‬ َ ُ َ ْ َ َ َ َّ َّ َ َ ًّ َ ُّ
the prophets): Each flowing toawards an explicit term, and that
Allahh is fully aware of all that you toil (in the scripture). ﴾31:29﴿ ‫ير‬ ِ ‫مسمى وأن ٱّلل بِما تعمل‬
ُ َ َّ َ ْ ُ َ َّ َّ َ َ َ
That is so because Allahh is the truth, and because what they
ِ‫ّلل ه َو ٱلحَ ُّق َوأن َما يَ ْد ُعون مِن دونِه‬ ‫ذَٰل ِك بِأن ٱ‬
َ ْ َ ْ َ ُ َ َّ َّ َ َ ُ َٰ َ ْ
call upon between him and them is untenable, and because
ُ ‫كب‬
Allahh is the exalted, the source of correct knowledge. ﴾31:30﴿ ‫ير‬ ِ ‫ٱلب ِطل وأن ٱّلل هو ٱلعل ِ ُّى ٱل‬
َّ َ ْ ‫حر بن‬ ْ ‫ك َتجْرى فى ٱل ْ َب‬ َ ْ ُ ْ َّ َ َ َ ْ َ َ
Have you not observed that the ‘Full-k’ flow in the sea by the
ِ‫ت ٱّلل‬ ِ ‫م‬ ‫ِع‬ ِ ِ ِ ِ ‫ألم تر أن ٱلفل‬
ُ
favor of Allahh so that he exposes to you of his signs. Indeed in
َ َ َ َّ َ َ ْ ُ َ ُ
this are signs for every persistently patient person, persistently ‫ت ل ِك ِل‬ ٍ َٰ ‫ل ِي ِريكم مِن ءايَٰتِهِ ٓۦ إِن فِى ذَٰل ِك لآي‬
communicating with Allahh.
ُ َ َّ َ
﴾31:31﴿ ‫ور‬ ٍ ‫ار ش‬ ‫ك‬ ٍ ‫صب‬
َُ َ ْ ُ َ َّ ُ َ َ َ ُّ َ ٌ ْ َّ ُ َ َ َ َ
And if waves like canopies hamper them they supplicate to
‫ّلل مخل ِِصين له‬ ‫وِإذا غشِيهم موج كٱلظل ِل دعوا ٱ‬
َ ْ ُّ ْ َ َ ْ َ َّ َ َ َ َ
Allahh, (promising to persist) with sincere allegiance, but when
he saved the to (the stability of) land, then only some of them ‫ص ٌد َو َما‬ ِ ‫ِين فل َّما نجى َٰ ُه ْم إِلى ٱلب ِر ف ِمن ُهم مقت‬ ‫ٱلد‬
ُ َ َّ َ ُّ ُ َّ ٓ َ َٰ َ ُ َ ْ َ
seek purpose in their actions. But none repudiates our signs
except those who are perfidious and habitual rejecters. ﴾31:32﴿ ‫ور‬ ٍ ‫ار كف‬ ٍ ‫يجحد أَـِبيت ِنا إِلا كل خت‬
ْ َ َّ ً ْ َ ْ َ ْ َ ْ ُ َّ َ ُ َّ ُ َّ َ ُّ َ َ
O people, be disciplined in dealing with the scripture from your
‫يأيها ٱلناس ٱتقوا ربكم وٱخشوا يوما لا يج ِزى‬
ٌ ُ ‫َوال ٌِد َعن َول َ ِده ِۦ َولَا َم ْول‬
Lord, and beware a day when no father shall ransom his
progeny, nor anyone ever born shall ransom his father. Indeed, ‫از َعن َوال ِ ِده ِۦ‬ َ ‫ود ُه َو‬
‫ج‬
ٍ
َ‫ك ُم ٱلْحَ َي َٰو ُة ٱ ُّلدنْيا‬ ُ َّ َّ ُ َ َ َ ٌّ َ َّ َ ْ َ َّ ً ْ َ
Allahh's promise is true. So, let not the nearer life beguile you,
nor let the deluder delude you about Allah. ‫شيـا إِن وعد ٱّللِ حق فلا تغرن‬
ُ ‫كم بٱ َّّللِ ٱل ْ َغ ُر‬ ُ َّ َّ ُ َ َ َ
﴾31:33﴿ ‫ور‬ ِ ‫ولا يغرن‬
َ َ َْ ُ َ َّ ‫ِندهُۥ عِلْ ُم ٱ‬ َ َّ ‫إ َّن ٱ‬
Indeed, Allahh alone determines the knowledge of ‘SāƐāh’; and
‫اعةِ َويُن ِزل ٱلغيْث َويَ ْعل ُم‬ َ ‫لس‬ َ ‫ّلل ع‬
ِ
he sends down the succor; and he provides evidence-based
ْ َ َّ ٌ َ َ ْ َ َ ْ
knowledge of what is in the wombs, while no ‘Nafs’ knows ‫ِب‬ ُ ‫كس‬ ‫ام َو َما ت ْدرِى نفس ماذا ت‬ ِ ‫َما فِى ٱلأ ْر َح‬
َ‫وت إ َّن ٱ َّّلل‬ ُ ‫َغ ًدا َو َما تَ ْدرى َن ْف ٌس بأَى أَ ْرض َت ُم‬
what it will reap tomorrow, and no ‘Nafs’ knows in what land it
will die. Indeed, Allahh provides the evidence-based ِ ٍ ِ ِ ِ
knowledge, and is all aware.
﴾31:34﴿ ۢ‫ير‬ ٌ ‫ِيم َخب‬ ٌ ‫َعل‬

‫ّلل مِائة عَا ٍم ث َّم َب َعث ُهۥ‬ ‫أ ْو كٱلذِى َم َّر عَل َٰى ق ْريَ ٍة َوه َِى خاوِيَة عَل َٰى ُع ُروش َِها قال أن َٰى يُ ْح ِىۦ هَٰ ِذه ِ ٱّلل بعد موت ِها فأماته ٱ‬
‫نظرْ‬ ‫َ َ َ ْ َ ْ َ َ َ َ ْ ُ َ ْ ً َ ْ َ ْ َ َ ْ َ َ َ َّ ْ َ َ َ َ َ ُ ْ َ َٰ َ َ َ َ َ َ َ َ ْ َ َ َ َّ ْ َ ُ‬
‫قال كم لبِثت قال لبِثت يوما أو بعض يو ٍم قال بل لبِثت مِائة عا ٍم فٱنظر إِلى طعامِك وشرابِك لم يتسنه وٱ‬
‫َ ُ ْ َ ْ َ َ ْ َ ُ ُ َ ُ َّ َ ْ ُ َ َ ْ ً َ َ َّ َ َ َّ َ َ ُ َ َ َ ْ َ ََّ‬ ‫ك َءايَ ًة ل َّ‬ ‫َ َٰ ِ َ َ َ َ ْ َ َ َ‬
‫نشزها ثم نكسوها لحما فلما تبين لهۥ قال أعل ُم أن‬ ‫ام كيف ن ِ‬ ‫اس وٱنظر إِلى ٱلعِظ ِ‬ ‫ِلن ِ‬ ‫إِلى حمارِك ول ِنجعل‬
‫ِير ﴿‪ - ﴾2:259‬البقرة‬ ‫ّلل عَل َ َٰى ُكل َش ْى ٍء قَد ٌ‬
‫ٱ َّ َ‬
‫ِ‬
‫ًّ‬ ‫َ َ ْ َ ً َّ َ َ َ َ ْ ً َّ ْ‬ ‫ج َعل َ ُه ٓۥ َءايَ ًة ل َّ‬
‫قَ َال َك َذَٰل ِك قَ َال َر ُّبك ُه َو عَل َ َّى َهي ٌن َول َِن ْ‬
‫ضيا ﴿‪ - ﴾19:21‬مريم‬ ‫اس ورحمة مِنا وكان أمرا مق ِ‬ ‫ِلن ِ‬ ‫ِ‬ ‫ِ‬ ‫ِ‬

‫̄‪A Few Challenges to Traditional Story of Ɛīssa‬‬


‫صبيا ً‬
‫ْ ْ‬ ‫َ‬ ‫َ َٰ َ ْ َ َٰ ُ ْ َ َٰ َ ُ‬
‫ب بِق َّو ٍة َو َءاتيْ َنَٰ ُه ٱلحُك َم َصب ِ ًّيا ﴿‪ - ﴾19:12‬مريم‬ ‫‪ -‬ييحيى خ ِذ ٱلكِت‬
‫ْ‬ ‫َ َ‬ ‫ََ َ َ ْ َ َ ُ َ َ ُ َ‬
‫ارت إِليْهِ قالوا كيْف نكل ُِم َمن كان فِى ٱل َم ْه ِد َصب ِ ًّيا ﴿‪ - ﴾19:29‬مريم‬ ‫‪ -‬فأ ش‬

‫وليس الذكر كاألنثى‬


‫َّ َ َ ْ ُ َ‬ ‫َ َ ْ ُ َ ٓ ُ َ َ َّ ُ َ ْ َ ُ َ َ َ َ ْ َ‬ ‫َ َ َّ َ َ َ ْ َ َ َ ْ َ‬
‫ت َوليْ َس ٱلذك ُر كٱلأنث َٰى َوِإنِى َس َّميْ ُت َها َم ْريَ َم‬ ‫ب إِنِى وضعتها أنث َٰى وٱّلل أعلم بِما وضع‬ ‫‪ -‬فلما وضعتها قالت ر ِ‬
‫َ ٓ ُ ُ َ َ َ ُ َّ َ َ َ َّ‬
‫ع ْمران‬
‫جي ِم ﴿‪ - ﴾3:36‬آل ِ‬ ‫ِ‬
‫لشيْ َطَٰن ٱ َّ‬
‫لر‬ ‫ِ‬ ‫وِإنِى أعِيذها بِك وذرِيتها مِن ٱ‬

‫ذريتها‬

‫اصطفاك وط َّهرك واصطفاك‬


‫ك عَل َ َٰى ن َِسآ ِء ٱل ْ َعَٰلَم َ‬ ‫ْ َ‬ ‫َ ْ َ َ ْ َ َ َ ُ َ َٰ َ ْ َ ُ َّ َّ َ ْ َ‬
‫ع ْمران‬
‫ين ﴿‪ - ﴾3:42‬آل ِ‬ ‫ِ‬ ‫ك َو َط َّه َركِ َوٱص َطفى َٰ ِ‬
‫ّلل ٱص َطفى َٰ ِ‬ ‫ت ٱلملئِكة يمريم إِن ٱ‬ ‫‪ -‬وِإذ قال ِ‬
