UNIT 8B

What would
you have done
if you hadn’t
studied at
ESPOL?
If I hadn’t studied at ESPOL, I would
have (done…, studied…, traveled…)
Third Conditional
• We use the third conditional to talk about imagined past
events or states and their consequences IN AN UNREAL
PAST:
STRUCTURE
• IF clause: IF + past perfect
• Main clause: would have + past participle

• If I’d arrived five minutes earlier, I ‘d have seen the

robbery (but I arrived after the robbery, so I didn’t see it).
• Be careful with ‘d. It’s short for had in the if clause but would in the main
clause

• If I’d known earlier, I’d have told you.

• We can use past perfect continuous in the if clause. We can also use might
or could in the main clause:

• If I hadn’t been wearing a helmet, I might have been very badly hurt. (But I
was wearing a helmet, so I wasn’t hurt.)

This is pronounced: /ʃʊdəv/
