Courses
This guide will help you to prepare to deliver an Official CompTIA Content
for A+ Core 1 and Core 2 course. It contains tips for planning and delivering
the course, plus requirements and setup instructions for delivering the lab
activities. Please take the time to familiarize yourself with the content of
the entire course, including its organization and instructional approaches.
You should review each of the activities and exercises so you can facilitate
them during the learning event.
Preparing to Teach
Official CompTIA Content is created around four core principles:
supporting the modern learning, focus on job roles and objectives, sound
instructional design, and integrating active learning.

Presentation Planning
Within the instructional design hierarchy, the course structure tries to
follow the exam objectives domain structure as far as possible, but some
objectives have been moved about so as to make the topics flow better
and to eliminate duplications. The course is designed to be as modular as
possible, so that you can use the content as flexibly as you wish.
Suggested timetables are available to download from the course website.
You will need to adjust these timings to suit your audience. With the latest
revision of the certification exams and corresponding exam objectives, a
significant amount of new content has been added to this edition of the
course. You might need to employ time-saving techniques:
■ Ask participants to pre-read some of the content as "homework" to
reduce class time spent on that topic.
■ Summarize a topic in overview, and then answer questions during a
later session when students have had a chance to study it in more
detail.
■ Reduce the number of activities you try to cover to focus on the topic
content. If you are using CompTIA Labs, students can attempt the
activities outside of class time. There are no dependencies between the
lab activities, so they do not have to be completed in sequence or at all.
■ Throughout the course, when software or applications are being
installed or updated that might take considerable time, consider having
students start the install or update, then present the related content.
You might also consider having the install or update begin before a
scheduled classroom break.
Other Tips
Here are some useful tips for presenting the Official CompTIA A+ Core 1 and
Core 2 course.
■ If you will have remote participants for your class, it is strongly
recommended that you position a camera directly above a work area
so that remote students can watch as you or other participants work
with the various hardware components throughout the course.
■ Software vendors mentioned in this course may at any time deploy
software updates digitally, resulting in changes that may not be
reflected dynamically in this course. Stay up to date with product
updates and be ready to adapt the material to any changes in the user
interface.

HOST and VM Equipment Requirements
The Official CompTIA® A+® Core 1 and Core 2 (Exams 220-1001 and 220-
1002) course contains a mix of suggested written/discussion activities and
Virtual Machine (VM)-based hands-on activities.
The activities should work the same on any Hyper-V platform that
can support Generation 2 and VM configuration version 8.0, but
they have been tested only on Windows 10 1803.
■ 200 GB free disk space. An SSD will deliver much better performance
than an HDD.
■ DVD-ROM drive.
You will need product ISOs and (where applicable) product keys/licenses
for the following x64 software:
■ CentOS 7 (x64). Note that a prebuilt VM is provided. You will only need
to provide an ISO if you want to demonstrate or run an attended
installation of Linux.
If you are using the same PCs for hardware hands-on activities, also refer
to Additional Hardware Requirements later in this guide.
Instructor HOST PC
You can configure the instructor PC in the same way as the student HOST
PCs so that you can demonstrate the activity steps. The following
additional items will be useful.
■ AnBY:

■ Packet capture software such as Wireshark will be useful when covering
the networking topics to show students examples of frames, packets,
segments, and application protocol headers. All the VMs will have
Wireshark installed, but you may also want to install it to the HOST.
The WORKBENCH activity steps follow Windows 10 (1803 build) but it may
be useful to have a mix of Windows 7 and Windows 8.1 machines to
provide the experience of different types of systems. You should also
install CPU-Z (www.cpuid.com/softwares/cpu-z.html) or make the installer
available to learners. A copy is provided with the setup files. You may also
want to provision examples of macOS computers or PCs running Linux or
Chrome OS.
It may be helpful to use machines with a mix of types (tower and all-in-
one), bus and storage technologies (CPU models, RAM types, bus types
(PCI, PCIe, storage devices/RAID), and BIOS MBR/UEFI GPT firmware so that
learners can get experience with a wide range of different setups.
Start the course with all cables and ports disconnected. Network adapters
should be set to obtain an address automatically. Provide learners with
note paper and pens.
Demonstration/Hands-on Equipment
The following items will be useful for demonstrations and for completing
hardware hands-on activities.
■ There are no specified activities that involve the removal of CPUs, but if
you do want to demonstrate this, you will also need thermal
compound.

■ Sample motherboards (ATX, micro-ATX, mini-ITX). © 2019 CompTIA, Inc.
■ A good mix of peripherals will also be useful. Try to supply different
kinds of keyboards and mice, different kinds of displays and cabling,
microphones and speakers, and webcams.
■ Cables to use as examples: USB connectors of all types, SATA, VGA, DVI,
HDMI, KVM. Some legacy cable types such as serial, parallel, PATA, and
SCSI have been restored to the exam in the 1001 edition, so you may
wish to source examples of these too.
■ Additional graphics adapter cards for learners to use for upgrades. You
can also get learners to remove a card from one PC and then give to
another learner to install. Optionally, additional display devices to allow
learners to configure multi-monitor settings.
Networking Equipment
The wireless network activity requires learners to connect their
WORKBENCH PC to a wireless access point. You can use dedicated or
multifunction appliances (or ideally a mixture of both). Provide as many
different appliances as possible to allow learners to work in smaller
groups. Each learner requires a UTP patch cable and a wireless adapter.
Optionally, provide cable termination and testing tools, though this type of
activity is best left to Network+.
IoT/Home Automation
The suggested home automation activity uses the following devices:
■ Smart bulb kit (Philips)—make sure you choose the correct bulb fitting
for the lamps you have.
Laptops
As laptop disassembly is an important part of the exam objectives, it is
suggested that you provide devices for the students to at least partially
disassemble. This lab is obviously optional depending on whether you have
suitable equipment to use for this purpose.
Try to use a range of models with different features (ports and other
expansion options, touchpad types, trackpoint, touchscreen, and
Kensington lock point).
Mobile Devices/Bluetooth
There are few specific activities for using smartphones and tablets, but it
will be useful to provide examples of these devices to demonstrate
yourself or to pass around. Learners may be willing to use their personal
devices to practice activities, such as establishing a Bluetooth connection.
■ USB and Lightning cables and display adapters, plus cables that do and
do not work with the device selection.
Printing Equipment
■ One printer for each group of learners (ideally one per pair). A mix of
different printer technologies (laser, inkjet, dot matrix, and direct

■ Faulty RJ-45 patch cable or USB cable to create connection issue.
Other
The following will also be useful to display or demonstrate to learners as
exhibits during various parts of the course:
The setup process for the VM-based activities involves the following
phases:
2) Import the VyOS and Linux VMs from the preconfigured images.
3) Install the Windows Server VMs using your setup media and configure
them by running the supplied scripts.
4) With the Windows Server VMs running, install the Windows desktop
VMs using your setup media and configure them by running the
supplied scripts
Some activities assume use of the web. If you do not want to allow Internet
access on the Hyper-V HOST PCs, use different PCs for those activities,
specify them as self-study activities, or omit them.

Students will also complete some activities on a Linux CentOS 7 desktop.
The virtual disk for this is supplied and the VM (LX1) will have been created
as part of the scripts you have run already. This VM is also attached to the
vLOCAL switch. The activities in A+ do not involve using Linux on the
network but you may wish to perform additional activities. It is set to use
DHCP. If MS1 is running, it will be allocated the reserved IP address
10.1.0.10. The principal user account is centos and the password is
