Extreme value theorem: If a function f is continuous on a

closed and bounded set (compact set), then the function f

attains both a maximum and a minimum on the set.

NOTE: The extreme value theorem refers to only a

sufficient condition (not a necessary condition) for a
function to have a maximum. There might be the case in
which a function has a maximum and/or minimum if it is
not continuous or is not defined on a compact set.
