POST LAB:
You should have found that the gain of the common base amplifier is high and
the input impedance is very low. What effect do you think the low in-put
impedance would have on most input signals to the amplifier?

m
er as
If it is too low, it can have an adverse loading effect on the previous stage and

co
possibly affecting the frequency response and output signal level of that stage.

eH w
But in most applications, common emitter and common collector amplifier

circuits generally have high input impedances.
rs e
ou urc
Even though the common base amplifier has a high gain, why do you think it is
not very popular for use as an audio amplifier?
o

A common-base amplifier has high voltage gain but no current gain. It's input

impedance is low and it's output impedance is high. ... The main problem with the

common-base configuration is cascading stages. If the stages are all common-

base the mismatch from the output of one to the input of the next cancels the

gain.

Considering that the impedance of most coaxial cables used to carry RF signals

The common base amplifier circuit is used, where the low input impedance is
required. The following are the applications of the common base amplifier circuit.
sh

It is used in moving coil microphones Preamplifiers. It is used in UHF and VHF RF

amplifiers.

CRITICAL ANALYSIS:
In this lab we implement common base amplifier. We verify by measuring the
input voltage and Output voltage of the transistor as well as calculate the total
gain of the transistor. After that we calculate the impedances of the implemented
circuit and that compared the calculated values.
For DC analysis we consider the capacitors as open i.e not considered. Thereby Ib
can be calculated using simple KVL & further can be calculated similarly. For AC
analysis the capacitors are considered short and the circuit is again redrawn. The
main point of concern are input, out impedance and the amplification factors. The
input impedance is usually calculated with the source. And output across the
output terminal. The amplification factor is generally the ratio of output by input

m
voltage. The common collector amplifier has quite large current gain, larger than

er as
any other transistor amplifier configuration.
