Succession planning at the highest levels is always a challenge. Boards of directors

of some of India's largest companies have been found lacking on several occasions.
They either procrastinate or wait until the last minute. Alternatively, a powerful
chairman or CEO may end up dictating the institution's direction, frequently to the
institution's harm.

That's why the seamless changeover at Wipro, as they followed the succession
planning. Wipro's chairman, Azim Premji, was uneasy about bringing his son Rishad
into the firm about 2006. Wipro had earned a reputation for being a well-run
company, and Premji was concerned that bringing in his son might tarnish that
image.

Over the last 12 years, Rishad has been consciously groomed by his father to take
on the mantle of a pragmatic owner of one of the country’s most respected
institutions. No one will grudge him the new role of executive chairman. Rishad has
earned his spurs both through his leadership role at Nasscom and in guiding Wipro’s
strategy.
Anyone who has interacted with him will know that he is a chip off the old block. By
all accounts, Rishad is deeply aware of the need to meld and retain many of the old
values and the legacy that helped build Wipro. At the same time, he’s been open to
progressive new ideas that ensure that the company moves to the next level.

Wipro followed the family business philanthropy, Premji has chosen to devote all his
attention to philanthropy. And unlike some of his peers, he has shown the ability to
walk away from the company that he built and not portray himself as indispensable.
Not only has he created space for his son to learn the ropes, by all accounts, he’s
also steadfastly avoided remote controlling every aspect of this crucial transition.
Azim Premji Endowment Fund owns 13.6 percent of the promoter holding in Wipro
and has the right to receive money earned from promoter shares, the report said.
Azim Premji Endowment Fund is an entity set up by Premji to carry out his
philanthropic activities.

Software major Wipro's Chairman Rishad Premji  on Thursday said social media

platforms have integrated the world like never before and should be allowed to
practice ''Responsive Self-Governance'' to tackle the menace of hate and
misinformation.

Premji said technological developments on the digital and social media represent an
incredibly powerful opportunity for betterment and the issues arising through its
misuse need to be addressed immediately.

Technology, particularly digital and social media, have integrated the world as never
before. They've fostered human connections and solidarity across distances and
barriers. And this is incredibly powerful. At times, they have been a channel for
consolidation and fomenting of hate and misinformation.
