1. Consider an incompressible fluid laminarly flowing
in a tube with circular cross section, inclined at an angle β to the vertical. The fluid flows upward due to pressure difference created by the pump. End effects may be neglected since the tube length L is relatively long compared to the tube radius R. According to this information:
a. Using a differential shell momentum balance, find the
velocity profile for a Newtonian fluid. Obtain the expressions for maximum and average velocity. b. Determine the velocity distribution using both equation of continuity and equation of motion.
2. A Newtonian fluid is in laminar flow in a narrow slit formed by two parallel walls a distance 2B apart. It is understood that B<<W, so that edge effects are not important.
a. Make a differential momentum balance and obtain expressions
for the momentum-flux and velocity distributions. b. What is the ratio of average velocity to the maximum velocity for this flow? c. Allowing the wall at x=B to move in the positive z direction at a steady speed νo ; obtain i) the shear stress distribution, ii) the velocity distribution.
3. A Newtonian fluid flows upward between two parallel plates a
distance 2B apart. While the left plate is moving downward at a constant velocity vo, the right plate is moving upward with 3vo. If the flow of the fluid is obtained only by the movement of these two plates, make necessary assumptions and obtain the velocity profile under steady conditions.
