PROBLEM SET III

(Date Due: November 13, 2018)

Problem 1. A vertical cylinder fitted with a frictionless piston contains 2 kg of wet

steam at 125 kPa and 15% quality. Heat is added at constant pressure while the piston
moves upward. This continues until the quality reaches 40%, at which point the piston
becomes stuck and cannot move any further. Heat continues to be added until the
pressure reaches 250 kPa.
a) Calculate the total heat added to the system.
b) Show the process in a P-V diagram.

Problem 2. An insulated cylindrical tank of 0.14 m3 volume is

divided into two equal parts by a frictionless piston as Water Air
shown in the figure below. The piston does not conduct heat.
Initially air is at 40 ˚C and the water is at 90 ˚C and 15%
quality. Heat is supplied to the water side by electrical
resistance coils until it exists as saturated vapor.
a) Calculate the final pressure.
b) Calculate the amount of heat transferred.

Problem 3. A fluid at 8 bar and 200 ˚C flows into a rigid tank of 1 m3 volume through a
10 cm internal diameter pipe at an average velocity of 3 m/s. The tank is initially
empty. After 30 s, the temperature in the tank is recorded as 200 ˚C.
a) Calculate the pressure in the tank if the fluid is steam.
b) Calculate the pressure in the tank if the fluid is air.

Problem 4. Air flowing at a mass flow rate of 1.2 kg/s is to be heated from 10 ˚C to 40
˚C in a heat exchanger. Steam enters the heat exchanger at 300 kPa and 250 ˚C, and
leaves at 300 kPa and 90% quality. Calculate the mass flow rate of steam.

Problem 5. Steam is first cooled by mixing with liquid water and then expanded in an
isentropic turbine as shown in the figure below. Calculate the power output of the
turbine.
Liquid water

5 MPa
5 MPa 20 ˚C
1000 ˚C 5 MPa
Steam Mixing 600 ˚C Isentropic
Chamber Turbine 𝑊̇𝑠
𝑚̇ = 10 kg/s

10 kPa
