The second phrase we'll look at is "the rest is history." We use this phrase when the speaker
leaves out the end of a story because it's obvious to the listener what happened. Mike
assumes that Joey knows what happened, and therefore, he uses this phrase, but from
Joey's reaction we know that Joey does not know. Here's another example: "The band's hit
record came out in the early nineties, and the rest is history." This means that people know
how the band is doing today.

Note that we commonly use contractions when speaking, as in the example from the
