AIM:

To determine:

 The acceleration g of gravity using a compound pendulum.

APPRATUS:
 Compound bar pendulum.
 A stop watch
 A graph paper

THEORY:
The compound pendulum, which is also known as the physical pendulum, is
an extension of the simple pendulum. It is any rigid body that is pivoted so
that it can oscillate freely.
For e.g. – bar pendulum

We know, the time period of a pendulum is given by,

Thus, we can calculate g using,

PROCEDURE:
 Suspend the pendulum in the first hole by choosing the length 5 cm on
the length slider.

 Click on the lower end of the pendulum, drag it to one side through a small
angle and release it. The pendulum will begin to oscillate from side to side.

 Repeat the process by suspending the pendulum from the remaining holes by
choosing the corresponding lengths on the length slider.

 Draw a graph by plotting distance d along the X-axis and time period T along
the Y-axis. (A spreadsheet like Excel can be very helpful here.)

 Calculate the average value of  l/T2 for the various choices of l, and then
calculate g.

OBSERVATION TABLE:

GRAPH:
CALCULATIONS:

From the graph above at, T = 1.5 sec.,

A = 10 cm, B = 35 cm, C = 65.5 cm, D = 89 cm.

Thus,
AC = 55.5 cm BD = 54 cm

Therefore, g (theoretically) = 9.73 m/s2

RESULT:

Average acceleration of gravity, g= 4π2(l/T2) = 9.73 m/s2

CONCLUSION:

Thus, the acceleration due to gravity is calculated in the following experiment,

using the concept of damping of oscillation in a compound pendulum due to
gravity.
