FOLKTALE

 Definition

Folktale is a story originating in popular culture with no known author that is passed down from
generation to another orally.

 Social Function

- To teach about proper behavior


- To show what values are important to the community
- To amuse or entertain

 Generic Structure

1) Orientation
This part sets the scene: where and when the story happened and introduces the participant of
the story: who and what is involved in the story.
2) Complication
This part tells the beginning of the problems which leads to the crisis (climax) of the main
participants.
3) Resolution
Problem (the crisis) is resolved, either in a happy ending or in a sad (tragic) ending.
4) Re-orientation
This is a closing remark to the story and it is optional. It consists of a moral lesson.

 Language Features

1) Focus on specific and usually individually characters


2) Use past tense
3) Adverb of time, such as once upon a time, one day, a long time ago, in the end, etc.
4) Time conjunction, such as when, then, suddenly, after that, etc.
5) Action verbs; verbs that show action such as went, killed, left, made, run etc.
6) Direct speech; to make the story lively.
E.g Dayang Sumbi shouted out, “Can anybody help me to get my tool?”

Read the following text and fill in the blank spaces by using suitable word from the box!

SANGKURIANG

Dayang Sumbi was a (1)……………….. and kind hearted princess, but sometimes she was

very lazy. Her hobby was (2)………………….. cloth. One day, her weaving tool fell. Tumang, a

(3)……………… dog, came bring her tool back to her. As she had promised, she married him.

Tumang was actually a (4)………………. who had been cursed by a witch to become a dog. But

sometimes he could turn back to a normal man. Dayang Sumbi and Tumang got one son. His name
