Questions

1. Which are the works identified as the “fixed assets of our literature”, by Sujit Mukherjee
in his essay „Proposition‟. Discuss the reasons why he considers Ramayana and Mahabharata
as being important to Indian Literature.

2. Discuss the themes of madness and love, as found in Bhakti and Sufi poetry which you
have read in your course. Explain the importance of these ideas in the message that the poets
and singers wish to communicate.

3. Explain the common origins of Hindi and Urdu as explained by Amrit Rai in his
„Introduction: A Conspectus‟ in A House Divided . Elaborate on the argument, using any text
in that unit to illustrate the points made.

4. Dalit writing often highlights how Dalit lives are different from upper caste lives in almost
every aspect of daily life, be it the concept of childhood, the idea of education, or even the
idea of self. Do you agree? Discuss ANY TWO of these aspects (concept of childhood, the
idea of education, the idea of self) with reference to the prescribed text(s) of your choice.

5. Discuss EITHER A.K. Ramanujan‟s „A Flowering Tree: A Woman‟s Tale‟ OR Nabaneeta


Deb Sen‟s „A Woman‟s Retelling of the Rama-tale‟ as an example of a woman centered text.
Explain that the text highlights a woman‟s story with a focus on the experience and world
view of her own.

6. M.K. Naik makes an elaborate argument for considering Indian English literature “as the
youngest among Indian Literatures”. Do you agree ? Give your argument, using the examples
of Indian English writing prescribed in this course, to present your case.
