Informal Introductions
TIP #1: Introduce yourself by saying, “I’m + your name.” This is more common than, “My name
is + your name.”

TIP #2: Ask “What about you?” or “How about you?” to continue the conversation.

Situation 1: Meeting a neighbor while taking a walk

Vanessa: Oh, what a cute puppy. He looks so fluffy! I’m Vanessa. I live on Oak Street. I think I’ve
seen you walking your dog before.

Dan: You probably have. I’m Dan and this is Charlie. I live two streets down on Cypress Street.
I’ve gotta get back home to give Charlie water, it was nice meeting you!

Vanessa: You too, see you around!

Situation 2: Meeting a friend’s friend

Part 1: Direct Introduction

Vanessa: Hi, I’m Vanessa. How do you know Sarah?

Dan: Hi, Vanessa, I’m Dan. Sarah’s parents and my parents are longtime friends, we practically
grew up together. What about you?

Vanessa: Oh, we went to college together.

Part 2: Indirect Introduction

Vanessa: I’ve never had goat cheese and honey before. This is pretty good! I’m Vanessa, by the
way.

Dan: Hi Vanessa, I’m Dan. Yeah, the food is great! Sarah’s family owns a restaurant so they
really know good food.

Vanessa: That’s so interesting! How about you?

Formal Introductions
TIP #1: Keep your formal introduction short and clear.

TIP #2: In the office, give a firm handshake and look at the other person in the eye.

Situation 1: In the classroom

Part 1: To the whole class

Teacher: We’ll go around the room, everyone please introduce yourself and say your major and
where you are from.

Vanessa: Hi, I’m Vanessa. I’m a biology student from the US. Nice to meet everyone.

Part 2: To one student

Dan: Hi, you’re Vanessa, right? From the United States? I’m Dan, I’m a biology student, too. It’s
nice to meet you!

Vanessa: Hi, Dan! I’m happy to meet another biology major. You’re from Spain, right?

Situation 2: In the office

Vanessa: Hi, I’m Vanessa, and I’m going to be the new graphic designer.

Boss: Hi Vanessa, welcome to the team. We’re excited to have you here. My name is Dan and I
will be your supervisor, so if you have any questions, let me know. Come with me, and I’ll
introduce you to the rest of the team.
