F or most job seekers, the tension and anxiety of the interviewing process is made even worse by
the idea of negotiating for the right salary. As a result, many job seekers choose to focus only on
preparing for the general interviewing process and put off any preparations for salary negotiations.
Without any preparation, the job seekers are caught off-guard when the hiring manager raises
questions related to salary. Various studies show that job seekers who walk to interviews without
preparing for the salary negotiation process tend to undervalue themselves or accept the first figure
offered by the hiring manager. Failure to effectively negotiate your salary will lead you to miss out on
huge sums of money in salary over the course of your career.
To avoid undervaluing yourself, it is good to prepare for salary negotiations as you get ready for an
interview. Luckily, you don’t need to be an expert negotiator. With some little planning and preparation,
you can successfully negotiate with your hiring manager to give you the salary you deserve. To help
you prepare adequately for your salary negotiation, we have created a checklist that you can use to
ensure you miss nothing in your preparation.
The checklist contains six sections. The first section entails researching the average salary range in
the market for the position to ensure that you negotiate from an informed position. The second section
involves determining your worth, which will help back your salary request. The third section involves
considering requirements of the position that might warrant you to ask for a higher pay. In the fourth
section, you come up with your expected salary range. Section five involves considering other benefits
that might complement the actual salary that comes the position. Finally, section six involves crafting an
elevator pitch which you will use to sell yourself and convince the hiring manager why you are worth
the salary you are requesting.
