Name:

Use the information in the lesson to answer the questions in Part One, then use the Doppler Effect Activity to
complete Part Two.
You may use the lesson, your notes, and the activity, but all answers must be in your own words.

Part One: Wave Facts (15 points)

1. (3pts) What type of waves can only travel through a medium?

mechanical waves can only travel through a medium

2. (3pts) What is pitch?

Sound quality characterized as low or high, allowing us to detect a sound's frequency level.

3. (3pts) What is the relationship between amplitude and volume?

Volume rises with amplitude and likewise. So the volume depends on the amplitude.

4. (3pts) How does the type of medium affect a sound wave?

The quicker the sound, the more stiff or less compressible the medium. The slower the speed of sound, the
higher the density of the medium.

5. (3pts) Describe the relationship between frequency and wavelength.

The relationship between frequency and wavelength is inverse. The wavelength of the wave with the highest
frequency is the shortest.

Part Two: Doppler Effect Activity (45 points)

In this activity, you will examine sound waves as they are emitted from a moving source. Predict what will
happen to the sound waves when the sound source is in motion.

1. Record your prediction (hypothesis) as an “if then” statement.

(For example: If the independent variable does this, then the dependent variable will do _____.)

(5pts) If the sound source gets closer to the observer, then the sound will get louder.
2. Select the boy icon. Select the lowest pitch by selecting the bottom music note located to the bottom right of
the lab activity. Select the GO button.
(8pts) What happened to the pitch of the sound as the sound source moved past the observer? Record
your observations.

As the object making the sound comes closer a higher pitch is heard after the object passes the pitch
goes down and quieter

3. Select the reset button on the lab activity. Select the boy icon. Select the middle note located in the bottom
right of the lab activity. Select the GO button.
(8pts) What happened to the pitch of the sound as the sound source moved past the observer? Record
your observations.

As the object making the sound comes closer a higher pitch is heard

4. Select the reset button on the lab activity. Select the boy icon. Select the highest note located in the bottom
right of the lab activity. Select the GO button.
(8pts) What happened to the pitch of the sound as the sound source moved past the observer? Record
your observations.

As the object making the sound comes closer a higher pitch is heard

5. (8pts) Why did the boy (the observer) hear the pitch of the sound change? What does this tell us about the
frequency of the sound? Support your conclusion based on results from the experiment and your knowledge
of sound waves.

Due to the Doppler effect. When a source of a wave is moving relative to an observer, this
phenomenon happens. The perceived frequency of the sound changes in this condition, as seen by the
observer. The apparent frequency is calculated as follows: This effect happens with sound waves, for
example, when we hear the sound of a car on a regular basis. There are two scenarios that might
occur: We notice an increase in the frequency of the sound as the car approaches us. We notice a drop
in the frequency of the sound as the car moves away from us.

6. (8pts) Describe at least two ways that your understanding of the Doppler effect could be applied to everyday
life.

1. Police use a device called a police radar gun to check the speed of cars that are coming toward
them. It sends out electromagnetic waves to do this. When the frequency of a signal that is
reflected changes, it tells us about the speed of the object from which it came,

2. Whenever I see a green traffic light ahead while driving very quickly, I need to be aware that
my speed could have changed the light's wavelengths. I think it might be a red light, so I
should slow down.
