AN ANALYSIS OF SOLID WASTE LANDFILL SITES ON SURFACE WATER

QUALITY

INTRODUCTION

Water is a life’s matter and it is one of the most basic thing that of all us need.
We cannot live without it for more than a few days. And yet, most people take water
for granted. We waste water needlessly and don't realize that clean water is a very
limited resource.

A Landfill site is a large area of ground, normally lined, that is used for tipping
and disposal of waste material. As long as the rainfall is greater than the rate of water
evaporation, then the liquid level (leachate) within the landfill area will tend to rise.

Solid waste landfill sites are one of the causes of surface water pollution.
Landfill leachate has created significant environmental issues throughout the world.
Most of the developed countries have strict guidelines for the management of solid
waste landfills as opposed to the open waste dumps commonly used in developing
countries.

For example, In Sri Lanka, Water had been considered as an inexpensive

natural resource because of its abundance. However, in recent years, good quality
water has become a scarce resource mainly due to water pollution.

Municipal waste disposal through open dumpsites is a common practice among

developing countries such as Sri Lanka, and these dumpsites have been recognized
as one of the significant threats to both surface and ground waters.

Both surface water and ground water are very important for us because we
cannot live without it. Many people have been in trouble due to water pollution in their
area. For example, in Malaysia, states like Selangor often experience water shortage
problems and water pollution problems. And this has been happening for years.
Actually solid waste landfills are indeed necessary to control pollution problems but
should be done in the right way as it can cause bigger problems in future.

1
SEARCH STRATEGY

There are many effects or impacts of solid waste landfills on surface water
quality. I learned how to research on this topic by going through 4 steps to get all the
needed information from various sources. Starting with Part A, I recognised the
concept for the question which is ‘solid waste’ and ‘landfill’ and ‘surface water quality’
then come out with synonyms for those three words. The alternative words I came out
with for ‘solid waste’ are ‘trash’ and ‘rubbish’ and ‘rubble’ while the alternative words
for ‘landfill’ are ‘disposal site’ and ‘rubbish dump’ and ‘dumpsite’. And the last word is
‘surface water quality. I organize the words and came up with a search statement
which is Solid Waste AND Landfill AND Surface Water Quality and Solid Waste AND
(Landfill OR Rubbish Dump) AND Surface Water Quality.

Using the search statement from Part A, I proceeded to Part B. I searched for
materials through the Pendeta Discovery by accessing it through University of Malaya
library website (http://umlib.um.edu.my) and clicked on the Pendeta Discovery. I
managed to find one thesis, one academic exercise that are relevant to my topic. All
the materials can be found in the Central Library.

Proceeding on with Part C, we were assigned to search for eight records from
the online databases that have been subscribed by University of Malaya. The online
databases can be accessed by logging into the library portal with our membership
identification number and clicking on the list of databases given. The records I found
were journal articles from different databases such as Emerald, Academic Search
Complete, JSTOR Archive, Science Direct, and IOP science Journal.

Next was Part D, we were asked to search for 3 articles using the search
engine. Using the concept and search statement, I searched for articles on Google
and found three journal articles.

For the last part which is Part E, I collected all the records from Part A to D and
provided citations for each record. I checked my citations using the EndNote and
compiled all the records. I also wrote an introduction for my topic based on the
information I found from the records.

2
OBJECTIVE

a) Identify the function of solid waste landfills site.

b) Identify the impact of solid waste landfill site on surface water quality.
c) Identify efforts that can be made to maintain the quality of surface water.

3
Literature Review

“The two most important sources of water are ground and surface. The wide
range of water usage as a key resource in our daily activities goes through domestic,
agricultural, transportation, industrial and health care. Usually, in developing countries,
small households and small communities rely on ground water, while big communities
and urban areas depend on surface water such as rivers and lakes, which are mostly
treated at water treatment facilities. Contamination of these water sources would
render them unwholesome for consumption and may be costly and difficult to treat.”
(Amano et al., 2020)

According to Talalaj (2013) the contamination of surface waters is due mainly

to surface run-offs both from the landfill area and from adjacent land and to dust
precipitation during operation of the landfill. An additional source of contamination is
the process of eurotrophisation enriching surface water with organic substances.

“In order to prevent river’s pollution, it is of a great importance to control the

leachate quantity as well as its quality and aim to comply with international standards
on the discharge criteria into natural streams. The development of waste strategies
and waste management plans should be encouraged at local and central level. Waste
strategies in the future should focus on the development of the waste infrastructure
and the strengthening of the inter institutional cooperation in the waste sector.
Continuous improvement of human resources through education and awareness
rising in the universities and research institutions, towards preparing professionals in
the fields of environmental engineering should be a priority.” (Kusari, 2018)

Discussion/Conclusion

Today, the mass media plays an important role in shaping the way all
consumers think. Therefore, with the mass media exposure on the issue of pollution,
the general public will be careful in dealing with the problem of pollution. So far, the
most popular media outlets on the issue of pollution are magazines and newspapers.

People need to be more sensitive to the environment of their country so that

they can live in a more comfortable and peaceful environment. And it depends on
themselves whether they want to do it or not.

To conclude, water is one of the most important thing in life and all of us need
to take care of it. As human being we must be grateful for all the thing that we have.
And we need to work even harder to make the earth free from any kind of pollution.

We also all need to play a role in overcoming this pollution problem especially
the water pollution problem. All of us need to be more concern about our nature and
our environment. I hope our nature and the environment will be better in the future.
