Your manager carries the final respon-
sibility for health, safety and environment
at your workplace.
HSE network
The HSE Department is a central
supportive unit. For information, advice,
training and other general questions,
please visit www.kuleuven.be/hse
or mail to vgm@kuleuven.be.

Your HSE network is a local team of staff
trained by the HSE Department and
headed by an HSE network coordinator.
This latter acts as a local point of contact
and mediates the information flow to and
from the HSE Department, the staff of the
organizational entity and the hierarchic line
(management).
You can also contact your HSE con-
sultant, who focusses on a central level
on follow-up and guidance throughout all
the HSE aspects within your unit.

Go to “HSE & Spaces”, open the appli-
cation “My HSE” and select “My HSE

HSE APPLICATIONS
Your HSE file
This individual file provides an overview
of any risks associated to your work
activities, along with the preventative
measures proposed to avoid them
(medical follow-up, personal protective
equipment, training, instructions).

The health compass summarizes a variety
of information that helps you maintain
a healthy lifestyle. The following pages
highlight a few specific topics.

To optimize the arrangement of your
workplace, the HSE Department provides:
• Tips customized to specific situations
(office, lab, lifting loads).
• Info on devices to aid dynamic working
(sit-stand-furniture).
• The possibility to request individual advice unacceptable behavior.

Your HSE orientation
The university attaches great impor-
tance to providing the right kind of
guidance for her staff regarding health,
safety and environment. All members of
staff are therefore supposed to receive
a customized introduction and orienta-
tion - with information adapted to their
(risk) activities, place of employment
and duration of their stay.
For various employee statuses, the
HSE orientation is supported by an
automated ‘orientation flow’. This
process is initiated as soon as the
HSE file for a new member of staff is
created.

Psychosocial wellbeing
KU Leuven wishes to provide a working
environment where every member of
staff can feel comfortable and finds room
to develop. Which is why the university
invests in preventing psychosocial risks
and has set up a wide support network
for staff who have questions regarding
psychosocial wellbeing.

Health surveillance
IDEWE is employed by KU Leuven as
external service for prevention. They
organize our staff’s health surveillance and
formulate recommendations regarding
pregnancy and breastfeeding.
• If you have certain risks associated with
your activities (cfr. included in your HSE
file), medical follow-up may be required.
If so, you will be invited automatically.
• You can, of course, also ask for a
spontaneous consultation.

EMERGENCIES, INCIDENTS & ACCIDENTS
What do I do in case of emergency?
In the event of an incident or emer-
gency, fast and efficient assistance is of
the essence. Therefore, for any urgent
intervention, always dial the internal
emergency number of your campus:

What to do during evacuation alarm?
1. Leave the building intervention of the emergency ser-
via the (emergency) exit.
2. Go to the nearest
assembly point.
3. The First Intervention team
supports the evacuation.
4. Wait for further instructions.
Waste
Waste at KU Leuven is sorted per waste
fraction as much as possible. Which
fractions and where to collect them may
vary per campus. More info is available
from your HSE network coordinator or the
HSE Department.

Reporting problems
If you detect an HSE problem that cannot
be solved locally, report it to your manager
or HSE network (coordinator) as soon as
possible.
How do I respond to an accident?
Contact your First Aid team
for immediate care.
In the event of a more serious injury that
requires medical assistance, it’s best to
register a work accident.

Call the internal emergency number
• for any incident that requires the
vices, such as fire- or smoke deve-
lopment, bomb threat or explosion,
serious work accident, lab accident,
flood, fighting, burglary ...

• in the event of an evacuation of a

as ventilation failure, power outage,
elevator blockage ...
