Course Objectives: -
The objective of this course is to provide the basic knowledge of computer and word processing software including MS Word, MS
Excel. This course will also help the students in applying and developing computer knowledge to commerce students to equip them with
computational skills using ICT tools.

Pre-requisites: The student must have basic knowledge of computer and its applications.

Course Level Outcome :-


CLO1: Student would be able to remember the basic concepts of computer and its application.
CLO2: Student would be able to understand and illustrate the data base languages and its processing, recent trends in Computing including E-commerce, green
computing, various software including word processing, spreadsheet and presentation.
CLO3: Learner would be able to develop the tools used in various software including word processing, spreadsheet and presentation.
CLO4: Student would be able to analyze and evaluate the practical knowledge of Computer applications with the help of word processing software.
CLO5: Students would be able to design various business model on e-commerce, green accounting.

Computer: An Introduction- Computer in Business, Elements of Computer System Set-up; Indian computing
Environment, components of a computer system, Generations of computer and computer languages; Software PC-
Software packages-An introduction, windows, Number systems and codes.
Module II – Word Processing Software & Networking
Descriptors/Topics 20%
Word processing: Meaning and role of word processing in creating of document, Editing, formatting and printing
document using tools such as spelling checks, Meaning of computer network; objectives/ needs for networking;
Applications of networking; Basic Network Terminology; Types of Networks; Data Communication Networking-
LAN& WANS. Network Topologies; Distributed Computing: Client Server Computing, Peer- to- peer Computing;
Wireless Networking; Securing Networks: firewall.

Module III – Spreadsheet and its Business Applications


Spreadsheet concepts, Managing worksheets; Formatting, conditional formatting, Entering data, Editing, and Printing 25%
and Protecting worksheets; Handling operators in formula, Project involving multiple spreadsheets, Organizing Charts
and graphs; Working with Multiple worksheets; controlling worksheet views, naming cells and cell ranges.
Spreadsheet functions: Mathematical, Statistical, Financial, Logical.

Module IV – Presentation Software, Data Base Language & its Processing


Descriptors/Topics 25%
Basics of presentations: Slides, Fonts, Drawing, Editing; Inserting: Tables, Images, texts, Symbols, hyperlinking,
Media; Design; Transition; Animation; and Slideshow. Creating Business Presentations using above facilities., Data
Base Language, dbase package, Basics of data processing; Data Hierarchy and Data file structure, Data files
organizations; Master and Transaction file.

Module V – Recent trends in Computing


Descriptors/Topics
Tools of business collaboration: emails, wikis, file sharing, screen sharing, web presenting, work scheduling; Grid 15%
Computing; Virtualization; Green Computing; E-Commerce: meaning, business models, Electronic Data Interchange
(EDI), Payment Gateways.
Pedagogy for Course Delivery:
The course is covered by adopting a blended teaching learning with the combination of lecture methods, PSDA and practical sessions on Computer
Applications based on Lab/ Practical exercises also including presentation by groups of students, self study sessions. Each student is required to do the back
ground reading from the specified chapters of the prescribed book before coming to class.

1. Project in Excel & its tools (Project): - Prepare a project in Excel to evaluate the performance of students result on the basis
of imaginary data.
2. Business presentation (Practical Assignment): - Creating a business presentation including tables, images, text, symbols,
hyperlinks etc.
3. Business model on e-commerce (Practical Assignment): - Prepare a business model on e-commerce.
4. Project on Grid & Green computing (Project): - Preparation of project on Grid & Green computing.
