ANSWER QUESTION 1

1. What are the motivational approaches applied by Tesco?

The theory of motivation that being used by the Tesco company is Herzberg’s Two-factor
Theory. It is also called as the motivator-hygiene theory. There are two categories of job factors
which is hygiene factors, the dissatisfiers, and motivation factors, the satisfiers. Hygiene factors
are job factors that are related to job-context. For example, the environment in which the job is
being performed. Motivator factors are factors that are related to job-content. For example, the
feelings attached to the job itself.

Employees who have motivation have greater concentration and will make fewer mistakes.
They will show loyalty to the company. While employees who did not have motivation will be the
opposite, they will feel dissatisfaction with their role in the work environment. This can change
and give a negative effect on both quality and efficiency on how employees carry out their jobs.
Based on the case study, Tesco considers that the business depends on two groups of people
which are customers and staff. Tesco supports its staff through flexible working hours, reduce
rate health benefits, discounted gym memberships, competitive salaries, and company share
options. These can be seen that company support their employees through Herzberg’s two-
factor theory, hygiene factors which are company policies and fringe benefits. One of the
advantages of Herzberg's Theory is the company can focus on the problem of employees. An
employee-friendly environment can happen because the company cares about its employees'
problems by making sure to reduce which factors dissatisfy employees at the workplace. Next,
money is treated secondarily. Herzberg’s theory measures employee satisfaction through other
important factors like job security, working conditions, interpersonal relations, and more rather
than only focusing on salary. Next, emphasis on motivation from within. This theory ensure
motivation coming from internal factors within the employees rather than external factors.

The next hygiene factor motivational approaches that were applied by the Tesco is interpersonal
relation. Interpersonal relations are the relationship of the employees with their peers, superiors
and subordinates should be proper and acceptable. Good relationships between fellow
employees, superiors and subordinates can increase the motivation of an employee because
they can work well together and help each other. This will help the company to achieve its vision
and mission more easily when all employees have a good relationship with each other. From
the case study, Tesco establishing trust and respect among employees in order to increase their
motivational level. With the motivation given, Tesco employees able to work well together as a
group and thus be able to achieve the goals set by the company. When employees respect
each other, they will be able to perform group tasks more productively. Not only that, they can
also share opinions more openly thus helping the organization to produce more quality and
attractive products and services.

Next, according to Herzberg, hygiene factors can’t be regarded as motivators because it is the
factors that related to job-content. Motivational factors lead to positive satisfaction. Employees
was inspired from these factors to achieve superior performance. The motivator factors are
including responsibilities and achievements. For responsibilities, the employees are responsible
for the work or task they do. The work or task should be given by the managers. Based on the
case study, Tesco’s employees are responsible to help sustain the market by working through
flexible working hour and work to encourages motivation through training. This also could help
the employees to have their chance to increase their leadership skills and improve their working
skills. Furthermore, each employee can build themselves through feedback that they received
from the customers that was provided from the managers. By encouraging self-assessment and
gives a continuous training, it helps them to achieve their full potential while working as the
employee. Last but not least, for the next factor which is achievements, this depends on the job,
employees must have a sense of achievement. Tesco’s employees need to stay motivated to
achieved their goals. To receive a good feedback from the customers, the employees need to
be work as a team and ensure individuals and team goals to be achieved. This helps them to
focus on customers’ needs by treating them fairly.

employees.

In a company, maintaining good relations between employees and the organization is very

dissatisfaction between them. There are many advantages to applying the relationship approach
between organizations and employees.

The first advantage is the organization and its employees must understand each other to
facilitate the work carried out. For example, Tesco supports a balance of employee life and
competitive wages. This can prove that management takes care of the welfare of its employees
and they also easily communicate with its employees while working. In addition, Tesco also
provides the benefit of discounted prices of goods to its employees if they want to buy goods
and this can help employees be more happy to work in the same organization.

management and employees, they can discuss it professionally. communication between the
organization and the employees is very important because they need to give support to each
other if the employees has a problem, the management needs to know and try to help its
employees. Just like Tesco, they give trust to its employees and provide a good convenience
such as teaching how to communicate with customers properly because it is one of the
responsibilities of the organization to its employees.

need to have loving nature. Tesco provides work through flexible working hours by setting the
time that employees should work so that they do not feel tired as quickly such as during breaks.
Besides, sometimes the organization needs to give bonuses to its employees because this can
give them the motivation to keep working and can strengthen the good relationship between
them other than going down to the field to see the condition of its officers or say hello.

efficient in doing their jobs. Thus can help the organization achieve the set goals and further
improve the quality of products and services. Motivational approach that can be used to
increase employee motivation is to provide bonuses, flexible working hours, and provide good
facilities for employees. With this, employees will be more motivated to do their jobs and will be
more diligent. Good relationships between employees, superiors and subordinates are also
important in motivating them. This is because employees can submit ideas without shyness and
fear when their relationships with colleagues and superiors are good. This will help the
organization in generating more interesting and creative ideas thus further improving the quality
and productivity of an organization. Training and development is also important to increase
employee motivation. Managers need to provide adequate training to employees to improve
their job skills and leadership skills. With the skills acquired, they can work more effectively and
efficiently thus fostering a sense of responsibility in being independent in themselves.
