Overview
Description
In this lab, we will create a more complex edge router configuration on the
ERX using virtual routers in addition to the default virtual router. These
virtual routers will communicate using a combination of IP, IS-IS, FR, and
ATM.
Objectives
After completing this lab, you will be able to do the following:
• Configure the Fast Ethernet Interface on the SRP with IP
• Configure a Loopback Interface with IP
• Create a virtual router
• Configure a T3/E1 Controller
• Configure a Fractional T1/E1 subchannel/Channel group
• Configure a serial interface on a Fractional T1/E1 subchannel/channel
group with PPP and IP
• Configure the ERX to use IS-IS
• Configure a ATM interface with IP
• Use the show commands to troubleshoot and verify the configuration

Getting Started
1. Cable the ERX using the physical network map noting the slot numbers
on the map.
2. If you or your lab partner do not need practice performing the initial
ERX configuration (Fast Ethernet, Loopback Interface, Telnet, ERX
Hostname), configure the ERX to boot using the start.cnf file
specifying the once option and reload the ERX. Then skip to section
Configuring VR1/VR2 with IP/IS-IS/PPP.
3. If you or your lab partner need practice performing the initial ERX
configuration, reload the ERX using factory defaults.
Configuring the Fast Ethernet, Loopback Interface, Telnet, and Hostname for
the Default Router
Using the information on the physical network map, perform the following
steps:
1. Review the factory default configuration file.
2. Enter configuration terminal mode on the ERX.
3. Configure the Fast Ethernet Interface on the SRP.
4. Configure the Management Fast Ethernet for IP using the address and
subnet mask found on the network map.
5. Exit configuration mode.
6. Verify that you can ping the other ERX on the Ethernet.
7. Review the configuration file.
8. Enter configuration terminal mode.
9. Configure the Loopback 1 interface on the ERX using the IP address
and subnet mask found on the network map.
10. Exit the interface configuration mode.
11. Configure the ERX for Telnet using the line vty command. Specify no
login to disable Telnet passwords.
12. Exit the line configuration mode.
13. Configure the ERX hostname.
14. Exit configuration mode.
1. Determine the default factory settings for the ERX timing sources:
7. NOTE: All lines (CT3, E1, POS, etc.) will have their clock source
configured for internal chassis and will derive clock based on the
parameters configured above.
Configuring PPP
Verifying PPP
We will verify the configuration a step at a time to become familiar with
the ERX in stages.
3. Verify that frames are being transmitted and received on the physical
interface.
5. Verify that frames are being transmitted and received on the PPP
Interface.

Configuring IS-IS
Configure IS-IS on the VR1 or VR2 virtual router.
2. Enable IS-IS in the VR1 or VR2 virtual router using the virtual router
name as the tag name.
3. Configure the router’s Network Entity Title (NET) using the net
command. This command configures the router’s Area ID, System ID,
and Selector. This address could be up to 20 bytes in length. In this
lab, we are using a 1 byte Area ID for simplicity.
5. Configure IS-IS on the WAN interface using the area tag configured
above.
Verifying IS-IS
Verify that IS-IS is operating properly between VR1 and VR2.

_____________________________________________________________
_____________________________________________________________
3. Verify that the Loopback interfaces on the peer ERX are reachable.
4. Review the IS-IS link state database, specifying the detail option.
♦ What is used as the LSPID in the IS-IS link state database? The
router’s NET or the router’s host alias?
_____________________________________________________________
3. Configure the Loopback interfaces in the new virtual router using the
IP addresses and subnet masks found on the network map.
3. Verify that frames are being transmitted and received on the ATM VC.
2. Enable IS-IS in the VR3 or VR4 virtual router using the virtual router
name as the tag name.
3. Configure the router’s Network Entity Title (NET) using the net
command. This command configures the router’s Area ID, System ID,
and Selector. This address could be up to 20 bytes in length. In this
lab, we are using a 1 byte Area ID for simplicity.
5. Configure IS-IS on the ATM PVC using the area tag configured above.

3. Verify that the Loopback interfaces on the peer ERX are reachable.
4. Review the IS-IS link state database, specifying the detail option.
_____________________________________________________________
1. Configure the last ATM PVC between VR1 and VR4 using aal5snap
encapsulation
2. . Assign the IP address and subnet mask to the PVC.
4. Verify that all routes are being advertised by IS-IS and are reachable
from all virtual routers.

2. Configure VR2 and VR3 as Level-1 only routers using the global IS-IS
parameter is-type.
