Overview

Description
In this lab, we will create a more complex edge router configuration on the
ERX using virtual routers in addition to the default virtual router. These
virtual routers will communicate using a combination of IP, IS-IS, FR, and
ATM.

Objectives
After completing this lab, you will be able to do the following:
• Configure the Fast Ethernet Interface on the SRP with IP
• Configure a Loopback Interface with IP
• Create a virtual router
• Configure a T3/E1 Controller
• Configure a Fractional T1/E1 subchannel/Channel group
• Configure a serial interface on a Fractional T1/E1 subchannel/channel
group with PPP and IP
• Configure the ERX to use IS-IS
• Configure a ATM interface with IP
• Use the show commands to troubleshoot and verify the configuration

ERX Configuration using
Virtual Routers
IP, IS-IS, PPP and ATM Lab 4

Initial ERX Configuration

Getting Started

1. Cable the ERX using the physical network map noting the slot numbers
on the map.

2. If you or your lab partner do not need practice performing the initial
ERX configuration (Fast Ethernet, Loopback Interface, Telnet, ERX
Hostname), configure the ERX to boot using the start.cnf file
specifying the once option and reload the ERX. Then skip to section
Configuring VR1/VR2 with IP/IS-IS/PPP.

3. If you or your lab partner need practice performing the initial ERX
configuration, reload the ERX using factory defaults.

Configuring the Fast Ethernet, Loopback Interface, Telnet, and Hostname for
the Default Router
Using the information on the physical network map, perform the following
steps:
1. Review the factory default configuration file.
2. Enter configuration terminal mode on the ERX.
3. Configure the Fast Ethernet Interface on the SRP.
4. Configure the Management Fast Ethernet for IP using the address and
subnet mask found on the network map.
5. Exit configuration mode.
6. Verify that you can ping the other ERX on the Ethernet.
7. Review the configuration file.
8. Enter configuration terminal mode.
9. Configure the Loopback 1 interface on the ERX using the IP address
and subnet mask found on the network map.
10. Exit the interface configuration mode.
11. Configure the ERX for Telnet using the line vty command. Specify no
login to disable Telnet passwords.
12. Exit the line configuration mode.
13. Configure the ERX hostname.
14. Exit configuration mode.

4-6 Rev 3.2 ERX Circuit Aggregation Configuration Basics

Lab 4 Initial ERX Configuration

Configuring the ERX Primary, Secondary, and Tertiary Timing Sources

1. Determine the default factory settings for the ERX timing sources:

♦ Primary Timing Source? ______________________________________

♦ Secondary Timing Source? ____________________________________

♦ Tertiary Timing Source? ______________________________________

♦ Which timing source is currently being used? ___________________

2. Configure the ERX’s primary timing source to be the external BITS

clock connected to T1 Port A on the SRP.
In our lab environment, we do not have a BITS clock connected to T1
Port A, , so this source will appear as having an ERROR condition and
will not be used

3. Configure the ERX’s secondary timing source to be the external BITS

clock connected to T1 Port B on the SRP.
Again, in our lab environment, we do not have a BITS clock connected
to T1 Port B, so this source will appear as having an ERROR condition
and will not be used.

4. Configure the ERX’s tertiary timing source to be the internal SC

Oscillator on the SRP.

5. Exit configuration mode.

6. Review the chassis timing parameters on the ERX.

7. NOTE: All lines (CT3, E1, POS, etc.) will have their clock source
configured for internal chassis and will derive clock based on the
parameters configured above.

Configuring VR1/VR2 with IP/IS-IS/PPP

Configuring a New Virtual Router

Using the network map as a reference, create a new virtual router, VR1 or
VR2. Remember that layer 1 and layer 2 configuration information is box-
wide, but layer 3 information (IP Interfaces, IP routing tables, etc.) is
specific to a virtual router. In this lab while we are still learning, we will
configure all layers in the specific virtual router.
1. Enter configuration terminal mode.
2. Create the new virtual router. Remember that virtual router names
can not be abbreviated.
3. Configure the Loopback interfaces in the new virtual router using the
IP addresses and subnet masks found on the network map.

4. Exit from the interface branch of the configuration tree.

Configuring PPP

1. Configure the CT3/E1 controller.

2. Configure the clock source and no shutdown.
3. Configure the T1/E1 and assign the appropriate timeslots to
subchannel or channel group 1.
4. Exit from the controller branch of the configuration tree.
5. Configure the serial interface or HDLC channel for the Fractional
T1/E1 just configured.
6. Configure PPP as the encapsulation method on the serial interface.
7. Assign the IP address and subnet mask to the PPP interface.

4-8 Rev 3.2 ERX Circuit Aggregation Configuration Basics

Lab 4 Configuring VR1/VR2 with IP/IS-IS/PPP

Verifying PPP
We will verify the configuration a step at a time to become familiar with
the ERX in stages.

1. Exit configuration mode.

2. Verify that the IP interface is operational using ping.

3. Verify that frames are being transmitted and received on the physical
interface.

4. Determine if the controller ifOperStatus is Up.

5. Verify that frames are being transmitted and received on the PPP
Interface.

6. Verify that frames are being transmitted and received on the IP

interface.

7. Examine the IP routing table.

♦ What routes are listed in the VR1 or VR2 IP routing table?_______

_____________________________________________________________

8. Do not continue until the link is operational.

For Training Purposes Only Rev 3.2 4-9

ERX Configuration using
Virtual Routers
IP, IS-IS, PPP and ATM Lab 4

Configuring IS-IS
Configure IS-IS on the VR1 or VR2 virtual router.

1. Enter configuration terminal mode.

2. Enable IS-IS in the VR1 or VR2 virtual router using the virtual router
name as the tag name.

3. Configure the router’s Network Entity Title (NET) using the net
command. This command configures the router’s Area ID, System ID,
and Selector. This address could be up to 20 bytes in length. In this
lab, we are using a 1 byte Area ID for simplicity.

4. Configure the two loopback interfaces as passive interfaces. With a

passive interface, the IP address of the interface is advertised by IS-IS
but no IS-IS packets are sent or received on the interface.

5. Configure IS-IS on the WAN interface using the area tag configured
above.

6. Exit configuration mode.

4-10 Rev 3.2 ERX Circuit Aggregation Configuration Basics

Lab 4 Configuring VR1/VR2 with IP/IS-IS/PPP

Verifying IS-IS
Verify that IS-IS is operating properly between VR1 and VR2.

1. Verify that a CLNS neighbor adjacency has been formed.

2. Verify that IS-IS is propagating routes correctly.

♦ What additional route should be listed in the VR1 or VR2’s IP

routing table?

_____________________________________________________________

♦ What IP routes should NOT be listed in VR1 or VR2’s IP routing

table?

_____________________________________________________________

_____________________________________________________________

3. Verify that the Loopback interfaces on the peer ERX are reachable.

4. Review the IS-IS link state database, specifying the detail option.

♦ What is used as the LSPID in the IS-IS link state database? The
router’s NET or the router’s host alias?

_____________________________________________________________

5. Use the show host command to obtain a mapping of router NET’s to

host aliases.

6. Review the configuration file, including the default values.

7. Save the running configuration file as isis.cnf.

Verifying the ATM PVC

1. Exit configuration mode.

2. Verify that the ATM PVC is operational using ping.

3. Verify that frames are being transmitted and received on the ATM VC.

4. Determine the state of the ATM VC.

5. Verify that frames are being transmitted and received on the IP

interface.

Configuring IS-IS on VR3 and VR4

Configure IS-IS on the VR3 or VR4 virtual router.

1. Enter configuration terminal mode.

2. Enable IS-IS in the VR3 or VR4 virtual router using the virtual router
name as the tag name.

3. Configure the router’s Network Entity Title (NET) using the net
command. This command configures the router’s Area ID, System ID,
and Selector. This address could be up to 20 bytes in length. In this
lab, we are using a 1 byte Area ID for simplicity.

4. In the previous configuration, we configured the two loopback

interfaces as passive interfaces. Passive Interfaces are considered
Internal IS-IS routes. In this configuration, we are going to
redistribute our directly connected networks into IS-IS. These routes
will be viewed differently by IS-IS.

5. Configure IS-IS on the ATM PVC using the area tag configured above.

6. Exit configuration mode.

♦ What IP routes should NOT be listed in VR3 or VR4’s IP routing

table?

_____________________________________________________________

_____________________________________________________________

♦ In the routing table, what is different about the peer’s Loopback

networks learned via IS-IS? What is the route type?

_____________________________________________________________

_____________________________________________________________

3. Verify that the Loopback interfaces on the peer ERX are reachable.

4. Review the IS-IS link state database, specifying the detail option.

♦ How are the loopback interface networks different with this

configuration?

_____________________________________________________________

Completing the configuration

1. Configure the last ATM PVC between VR1 and VR4 using aal5snap
encapsulation
2. . Assign the IP address and subnet mask to the PVC.

3. Configure IS-IS on this new ATM PVC.

4. Verify that all routes are being advertised by IS-IS and are reachable
from all virtual routers.

Extra Credit – Changing IS-IS Router Types

1. Currently, all routers are configured as Level-1-2 routers.

♦ Which routers must be configured as Level 2 routers?

_____________________________________________________________

♦ Which routers could be configured as Level 1 routers?

_____________________________________________________________

2. Configure VR2 and VR3 as Level-1 only routers using the global IS-IS
parameter is-type.

3. Examine the IP routing table on VR2 and VR3.

♦ Are any Level-2 routes listed? _________________________________

♦ What route has been added to the routing table? ________________

_____________________________________________________________

♦ Is the entire network still reachable using ping?_________________

♦ What routes are NOT being advertised via IS-IS? _______________

_____________________________________________________________

Hint: By default, a Level 1 router does not advertise external

routes. Additional configuration would be required to advertise
external routes by a Level 1 router.
