The Benefits of Music

The invention of music dates back to thousands of years ago. Its role in culture is no
less important than other cultural activities such as eating. Why is music important
to us?

First, music can stimulate our sensory system. Different rhythms, textures, melodies
and keys can give us various sensations. For example, a piece of music in the key of
F can bring us joy while music in minor keys can echo the hidden worries and
sadness deep in our hearts.

Second, playing musical instruments can help strengthen our motor skills and
coordination between the brain and parts of our body. For example, playing piano
with both hands can improve coordination between both sides of the brain and
between brain and the hands.

Third, playing musical instruments in groups can help improve communication

skills and social skills. This is particularly important in the area of music therapy, a
kind of therapy with the use of music for people with special needs, such as
children with poor communication skills. Evidence has shown that playing musical
instruments in groups can motivate them to speak and interact with one another.

Music has always been treated as unnecessary. However, if you make music part of
your life, you will surely enjoy the sensations and the magic of it.

Read Lillian's diary entry carefully and choose the best answers to Questions 34-39.

Saturday, 15th June Cloudy

Today I attended a workshop on music therapy at the city hall. The workshop was
conducted by a music therapist, Mr. Lee. Mr. Lee gave us a lecture to introduce to us the
basic concepts of the therapy. Then he demonstrated to us how to conduct a music
therapy session to children.

Music therapy is simply using music to heal. Clients of music therapy include
children with poor communication or motor or social skills, people who have a stroke,
and the elderly with physical disabilities. Music therapists guide clients to play musical
instruments individually or in groups, and ask them to listen to different programmed
music.

He then invited four children aged four to six to do a demonstration. Cute and
attentive, the children followed Mr. Lee’s instructions carefully and started singing and
playing instruments in groups. Mr Lee tied a wrist bell to the right arm of one of the
boys. The boy could not regain the full mobility of his right arm after a car accident.
When the boy played the bell and heard the bell ring, his face glowed and started to
giggle. His mother said that playing musical instrument helped regain his son’s
confidence and encouraged him to move his right arm more often.

I am surprised to see such benefits that playing music can bring. I would like to
learn more about the topic. I hope that I will become a music therapist one day.
