3. ITTF World Ranking Principles

2020 World Ranking Regulation

3.6. The amount of points allocated for each player or pair in an event is determined by
the World Ranking type of the event, the year when the event took place, the age
category and the result, according to the point tables at clause 9 of this regulation,
with the following considerations:

3.6.1. For events with both Teams and Singles competitions, singles win points in
team matches count together with the points from the singles result as a sum
for the following event types and age categories:

• Olympic Games
• Continental Games
• All Junior and Cadet events

3.6.2. Continental Team Championships points for Senior age category count
separately from Continental Singles Championships, with a maximum of 8
singles wins in team matches and including qualification stages matches if
existing.

3.6.3. Continental Championships, Continental Team Championships and Continental

Cup events points are and will be allocated differently for each Continent,
having a correspondence between the regulation and the organizer naming for
rounds or results. The decision will be taken and communicated by the World
Ranking Group, if deemed necessary, based on the effective playing system
with the goal of avoiding continental advantages/disadvantages.

3.6.4. For singles events, any seeded player having a bye in the first round and losing
in the second round shall be awarded the points corresponding to the loser of
the first round.

3.6.5. For events with points allocated for round-robin matches, players progressing
to the knock-out stage shall not receive round-robin matches points but only
points allocated for the final position or the round where they lose.

3.6.6. Players or pairs participating in an event and not obtaining any points shall
receive the Participation points.

3.6.7. Points shall be awarded to players or pairs playing at least one match in the
event, except for Participation points under the conditions of point 4.6.

3.7. Each of the ranking lists enumerated in point 1.3 is calculated by ordering the
players, pairs and teams based on their ranking points, which are calculated in the
following way:

3.7.1. Singles, Doubles and Mixed Doubles: the total amount of points for each
player or pair is obtained summing up the points from their best non-expired
results. Depending on the age category:

• Senior: best 8 results + T2 Diamond events

• Under 21: best 6 results
• Junior: best 5 results

Last updated: 15th September 2020 Page 7

2020 World Ranking Regulation

• Cadet: best 5 results

3.7.1.1. The following restrictions apply when selecting the best results:

3.7.1.1.1. Maximum 3 events of type T2 Diamond shall be added to the

best player results for Senior

3.7.1.1.2. Maximum one event of type Multi-Sport Games shall be counted

in the best player results.

3.7.1.1.3. Maximum one event from the following event types shall be
counted in the best player results:

• Continental Championships
• Continental Team Championships
• Continental Cup

3.7.1.1.4. All the player or pair penalties, according to section 4, are

included in their best results, replacing the lowest points results.

3.7.2. Teams: the total amount of points for each National Association is calculated
summing all the points achieved on a virtual simulation that opposes all the
teams in a round-robin basis.

Each virtual team match between two teams awards:

• Winner: 2 ranking points

• Loser: 0 ranking points
• Tie: 1 ranking point for each team

The winner and loser or tie condition of each virtual team match is determined
using the following playing system:

• A vs X
• B vs Y
• C vs Z
• A vs Y
• B vs X

Where A, B, C (Team M) and X, Y, Z (Team N) are the top 3 players of M and

N National Associations according to the Singles World Ranking list calculated
as described in point 3.7.1. Players must be eligible for World Title events to
be considered for the simulation. National Associations with 1 or 2 eligible
players shall have their virtual team completed with 0 ranking points players.

Each of the virtual singles matches is evaluated comparing the Singles World
Ranking points of the two players. Given players A and X:

• A has more ranking points than X: team M gets one point

• A has fewer ranking points than X: team N gets one point

Last updated: 15th September 2020 Page 8

2020 World Ranking Regulation

• A and X have the same ranking points: no points for either team

3.8. When the ITTF World Ranking is used for qualification or seeding purposes, the
following rules apply regarding ordering and tiebreaking depending on the event
kind:

3.8.1. Singles:

• Players are ordered comparing their ranking points, with any special
seeding modification according to point 5.
• If any players are tied, they are ordered comparing the previous month
ranking position.
• If any players are still tied, the position on the month before is compared
and so on until the tie is broken.
• If any players are still tied, the Competition Manager and/or Competition
Director shall decide based on fairness and equality principles depending on
the event characteristics.

3.8.2. Doubles and Mixed Doubles:

• Pairs are ordered based on the highest number of ranking points between
the Doubles Pairs ranking and the sum of the players’ Doubles Individuals
ranking. Pairs with 0 points either way are positioned after the rest and
ordered based on the sum of singles ranking points.
• If any pairs are tied, the previous month points are compared.
• If any pairs are still tied, the sum of the singles ranking points of the players
is used to order them.
• If any pairs are still tied, the Competition Manager and/or Competition
Director shall decide based on fairness and equality principles depending on
the event characteristics.

3.8.3. Teams:

• Teams are ordered based on their ranking points.

• If any teams are tied, they are ordered based on the ranking points
achieved only in the matches involving the tied teams.
• If any teams are tied, they are ordered based on the singles points average
in the matches involving the tied teams.
• If any teams are still tied, they are ordered based on the total amount of
points won in the virtual singles matches composing each of the virtual
team matches against all the teams in the complete simulation.
• If any teams are still tied, the Competition Manager and/or Competition
Director shall decide based on fairness and equality principles depending on
the event characteristics.

4. Incidents and penalties

Last updated: 15th September 2020 Page 9

2020 World Ranking Regulation

4.1. A penalty is a player or pair result in an ITTF organized event, valid for 12
consecutive ranking lists, awarding 0 points and being always considered as one of
the best player or pair results as of point 3.7.1.1.3, unless revoked according to the
conditions enumerated in point 4.4.

4.2. Penalties are determined by the World Ranking Manager and/or World Ranking
Group based on the report filed by the Competition Manager on site and the medical
reports or any other proof provided by the players if any of the conditions in point
4.3 are met. The decision shall be made interpreting the regulation if needed,
applying fairness and equality principles.

4.3. Penalties are given for the following reasons:

4.3.1. Official cancellation from an event sent by the National Association or coach
for a player or after the cancellation deadline, except when:

4.3.1.1. A penalty has already been given for the same player or pair for the
same reason 7 days or less before.

4.3.1.2. In non-invitational events, when a medical report that justifies the

player absence is provided and the player does not compete at any other
event at the same time.

4.3.1.3. In invitational events, when there are more than 7 days between the
cancellation deadline and the start of the competition, and there is a
possibility to replace the player with a reserve player or pair.

4.3.1.4. In invitational events, when a medical report that justifies the player
absence is provided 3 or more days before the start of the event and
the player does not compete at other event at the same time.

4.3.2. A player or pair does not show up at an event, except when a medical report
that justifies the player absence is provided and the player does not compete
at any other event.

4.3.3. A player or pair withdraws during an event, except when the player or a player
in a pair is injured or sick and unable to compete.

4.3.4. A doubles pair withdraws during an event because of an injury or sickness, but
the injured or sick player plays upcoming matches in other events at the same
competition. Penalty is applied to the doubles pair.

4.3.5. Any other reason if the World Ranking Manager and/or World Ranking Group
decides it is sanctionable after evaluating the Competition Manager report and
applying fairness and equality principles.

4.4. Penalties shall be revoked if one of these conditions are met:

Last updated: 15th September 2020 Page 10

2020 World Ranking Regulation

4.4.1. The penalty was given in an event of type World Tour or World Tour Platinum
and the player or pair competes in 5 or more World Tour or World Tour Platinum
events after the event where the penalty was given.

4.4.2. The penalty was given in an event of type different from World Tour or World
Tour Platinum, in Senior or Under 21 age categories, and the player or pair
competes in 6 or more events of type World Tour, World Tour Platinum,
Challenge or Challenge Plus after the event where the penalty was given.

4.4.3. The penalty was given in a Junior or Cadet age category event and the player
competes in 3 or more events of type World Junior Circuit Golden, World Junior
Circuit Premium or World Junior Circuit Regular after the event where the
penalty was given.

4.5. In cases when a player or pair is given a penalty for a certain event, having played
at least one match in it and having achieved ranking points, the points shall be
retained as an extra result apart from the penalty.

4.6. Participation points are given to a player or pair if any of these conditions are met:

4.6.1. Player or pair is on site but gets injured or sick before the start of the event,
and it is not the second or more consecutive event being present and not
playing any match. In case of a pair, the non-injured player must show up in
the call area or at the Competition Manager desk before any match where they
are walking-over.

4.6.2. A player or pair gets injured or sick in an event after playing at least one match
in one of the other sub-events where the player or pair is competing. In case
of a pair, the non-injured player must show up in the call area or at the
Competition Manager desk before any doubles match where they are walking-
over.

5. Seeding protection

5.1. Seeding protection is the right of the players to keep, for a limited period, a certain
amount of ranking points, which shall be used for seeding in ITTF World Ranking
included events.

5.2. Seeding protection may be requested by the National Association of a player if all
these conditions are fulfilled:

5.2.1. The player is injured, sick, pregnant or under any other circumstances that
prevent him/her from competing in table tennis events.

5.2.2. The player is not able to compete in any table tennis event, including leagues
or exhibitions, for a minimum of 6 months.

Last updated: 15th September 2020 Page 11

2020 World Ranking Regulation

5.3. Seeding protection must be requested, within 6 months after the last event where
the player competed, by filling out and sending the form present at
https://ittf.com/rankings/ to rankings@ittf.com.

5.4. The seeding protection duration, that is, the number of events or period when
special seeding is applied to a player with seeding protection, is determined by the
duration of the player absence applying the following rules:

5.4.1. Between 6 and 12 months: 3 singles and doubles events or up to 6 months

after the start date of the first event where the player competes after the
absence, whichever occurs first.

5.4.2. Between 12 months and 18 months: 5 singles and doubles events or up to 9

months after the start date of the first event where the player competes after
the absence, which occurs first.

5.4.3. More than 18 months: seeding protection is expired and special seeding shall
not be applied.

5.5. Re-injury Protection. The National Association of a player who has returned to
competition and gets injured again may request a freeze of the seeding protection
for the remaining events and time at the moment of the injury. To be eligible for
the freeze, the player must be out of competition for a minimum of 3 months. Upon
the player’s return to competition he/she shall have the same number of events
and period remaining as were available when the freeze went into effect. A
maximum of 2 freezes are allowed during the seeding protection period.

6. Special Seeding for non-Senior events

6.1. Under 21, Junior and Cadet players may get special seeding positions for Youth
Olympic Games, World Junior Table Tennis Championships or other major non-
Senior ITTF World Ranking events, if the player fulfills the following conditions
depending on the age category of the event:

6.1.1. Under 21: the player has 3 or less non-expired results valid for the Under 21
Singles ranking and player is ranked in top 40 of the Senior Singles ranking.

ranking and the player is ranked in the top 30 of the Junior or Under 21 Singles
ranking, or in the top 100 of the Senior Singles ranking.

6.2. The National Association of a player who fulfills the conditions of point 6.1 must fill
out and send the corresponding form, which can be found at
https://ittf.com/rankings/ to rankings@ittf.com, not later than 31 days before the

start of the event or the entry deadline for the event where the special seeding is
desired.

6.3. Special seeding for players fulfilling the conditions of point 6.1 can be applied by
the World Ranking Group, if deemed necessary, with the purpose of ensuring a fair
seeding at an event, regardless if a request was received from their National
Association.

6.4. The special seeding points, if assigned to a player in an event, are calculated in the
following way depending on the number of non-expired results that the player has
for the age category of the event:

6.4.1. No results: 75% of the sum of the ranking points from the best 5 results in
higher age categories.

6.4.2. 1 result: Ranking points in the Singles ranking list of the age category of the
event + 75% of the sum of the ranking points from the best 4 results in higher
age categories.

6.4.3. 2 results: Ranking points in the Singles ranking list of the age category of the
event + 75% of the sum of the ranking points from the best 3 results in higher
age categories.

6.4.4. 3 results: Ranking points in the Singles ranking list of the age category of the
event + 75% of the sum of the ranking points from the best 2 results in higher
age categories.

7. Retiring from the international Table Tennis competitions

7.1. The National Association of any player wishing to officially retire from international
Table Tennis competitions must submit a signed request to rankings@ittf.com. Once
