What I Have Learned

Directions: Write an essay about how gas diffusion affects your day to day life. If
possible, cite examples and explain its connection to your day to day life.

Diffusion is a type of mixing in which molecules are dispersed. It is the net migration of
molecules or atoms from a high-concentration region to a low-concentration zone, and it is a
direct impact of the substance's kinetic energy of random motion. Because the kinetic energy of
random motion varies depending on the substance, the rate of diffusion varies as well. During the
diffusion phase, the mixture will become equally dispersed within the containment vessel, with a
homogeneous concentration of substance.

In our daily lives, we are constantly exposed to diffusion. Gas diffusion of oxygen and
carbon dioxide gases occurs during breathing. A higher concentration of oxygen in the
atmosphere diffuses into our upper and lower respiratory systems, whereas a lower concentration
of oxygen diffuses into our upper and lower respiratory systems. During inhaling, this
phenomenon occurs. During exhalation, our alveoli have a larger concentration of oxygen, which
diffuses outside the system and into the atmosphere. Diffusion is critical for the movement of
chemicals in the body, such as oxygen into the blood and carbon dioxide out of the blood into the
air in the lungs, or glucose from the blood to the cells. It's the same reason that helium-filled
party balloons gradually deflate after a few days. The helium in the balloon diffuses into the
surroundings. When a barrier, such as a membrane, separates the high and low concentrations,
diffusion occurs.
