This course module will introduce you on the theoretical, historical, legal, and
sociological foundations that form the basis for the Special and Inclusive education.
Discussed also here in the module the lessons about the child development theories and
learners with additional needs. Thus, this module will be of great help to you especially you
are now on the stage of practicing your future career.

At the completion of this module, you are able to:

 Identify laws, policies, models, theories, and philosophies that form the basis for
special education practice.
 Distinguish the typical and atypical development and characteristics of learners with
exceptionalities.
 Design a learning plan in the context of learners with special education needs.
 Appreciate uniqueness and diversity among all learners most especially students with
additional needs, difficulties and disabilities.

UNDERSTANDING DIVERSITY

Objectives :

At the end of the lesson you should be able to:


 Discuss the meaning and significance of diversity;
 Explain Loden’s Wheel of Diversity; and
 Create a poster that demonstrates the impact and importance of acknowledging,
respecting, and tolerating diversity.

Introduction

Welcome to Chapter 1! In this chapter, you will have a better understanding


and knowledge of what is diversity. It is important to know this so that we will
recognize and accept diversity especially in our respective classrooms. Loden’s
Wheel of Diversity would be a help in understanding of what is diversity.

Activity :

Pick a classmate you do not fully know. Take turns discussing different
things/qualities about each other. Complete the Venn diagram below by listing the
things/qualities that make you different (list in the outer circles) and those that make
you two similar (inner circle). Count the number of things that make you the same
and make you different from each other.
