Part A Essay Questions

Answer two (2) of three (3) questions. Each question is worth 15 marks.

Each answer should be 1.5-2 pages or more typed in length.

Question 1.
Imagine that you are responsible for negotiating a valuable business contract with a
foreign company.
Outline the five stages of the negotiation process, and explain how each stage of the
negotiation process might be approached differently by negotiators from different
countries. Give examples to support your explanation.

Question 2.
Hofstede conducted research into value dimensions, which help us to understand
the differences between cultures and therefore behaviour of people from different
cultures.
Describe the following value dimensions, and give specific examples of how they
may influence the behaviour of employees or managers in the workplace.
(5 marks each, total 15 marks)

a) Power distance
b) Uncertainty avoidance
c) Individualism and collectivism

Question 3.
Imagine that you are responsible for managing expatriates within a multinational
company.
Discuss the importance of cross-cultural training for expatriate success, and describe
the training techniques that may be used to assist an expatriate adjust to an
overseas assignment. Give examples to support your answer.

Part B Short Answer Questions

Answer any four (4) of six (6) questions. Each question is worth 5 marks.

Answers to each question to be approximately 0.5-1.0 page typed or more in


length.

Question 1.
Imagine that you are offered an expatriate position to Australia. Explain which
approach to compensation (balance-sheet approach or localisation approach) you
would prefer to receive. Explain the reasons for your choice.

Question 2.
The risk of terrorism has increased in many places around the world. Discuss how
international businesses and managers can try to reduce the risk or the effects of
terrorism on their business and employees. Give examples to explain your answer.

Question 3.
Explain the difference between high-context and low-context cultures. Give some
examples of how people from high-context and low-context cultures may
communicate differently.

Question 4.
Imagine that you are responsible for advising your company on how to develop a
successful cross-border alliance. Explain how a company can improve the likelihood
of a successful cross-border alliance. Give examples to explain your answer.

Question 5.
An international assignment is a good way for a manager to develop their skills and
gain experience. Discuss the different types of skills and knowledge a manager can
gain while working overseas on an expatriate assignment. Give examples to explain
your answer.

Question 6.
Describe the concept of a ‘global mind-set’, and explain why a global leader should
have a global mind-set.
