CHAPTER I

BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

Introduction:

Millions of people from different age range are using vape, but not everyone is

aware of its effects. The very first vape was originally made smokeless and uses chemical

juices to be an alternative for the tobacco. The history of electronic cigarette also known

as e-cigarette dated back from early 1960’s. A rugby player from Australia names Herbert

A. Gilbert had proposed his idea in creating the e-cigarette, but it didn’t sell, only when it

was popularized in the year between 2006 and 2007. People tend to involve themselves to

health risk vices because they also lack knowledge about the bad effects of e-cigarette.

Another reason is that they also lack guidance from their parents, and most of all, the peer

pressure that pushes them to try the e-cigarette.

Researchers from Greece like Konstantinos Farsalinos shared his knowledge

about the effects when using e-cigarette, like the changes of blood pressure (BP) and

heart rate (HR) due to the trigger of sympathetic nervous system. It also develops

hypertension and risk from cardiovascular disease. It can always harm our lungs; the

smoke can formulate bacteria like staphylococcus aureus that causes pneumonia that can

kill people. You will also experience dehydration, like dry mouth, skin, and eyes that

leads to itchiness. It can also trigger allergies because of the juices they put inside the

e-cigarette; we do not know what those chemicals yield. The most harmful effect is the

addiction, because with that, it can bring danger to our health.

1
Even though vape is not good to our health, it is not yet proven to be really a good

alternative to cigarettes. The word vape came from the word Vapor. Technically speaking,

it is an electronic device used by individuals that vaporizes a flavored liquid that users

inhale and exhale. In the late 1990, vape is nicotine free and it is mostly used at the

casino where only rich people can afford because of its expensive price. Unlike today,

vape are sold at lower price and has high nicotine content wherein poor people can afford

it.

In this study, we will identify the physical, mental, and emotional effects of vape.

According to study, the long term effects of vape are not concluded yet but one thing is

for sure, its effect would be worse.

Researchers said that a typical vaping session had a similar impact on stiffness of

the aorta, the main artery in the heart. “The stiffer the balloon is the more difficult for the

heart to pump.” It is the most powerful biomake we have for estimating cardiovascular

risk.

Another information is that one of the common reasons for using e-cigarette is the

smokers who are trying to quit or reduce the consuming of cigarette per day. However,

there are few randomized controlled trials on the effect of e-cigarette on smoking

abstinence reduction. With this in mind, the research would likely to have a deeper study

on the ill-effects of vape to human.

2
Statement of the Problem

The problem of the study is: what are factors that greatly affect an individual to

use vape or e-cigarette.

Specific Questions: The study also sought answers to the following questions.

1.) Profile of the respondents.

1.1. Age range (12 and up)

1.2. Gender (Male and Female)

2.) Who are the targets of the study?

2.1. E-cigarette Smokers

2.2. Tobacco Smokers

3.) What are the minor effects of using e-cigarette?

3.1. Dry skin

3.2. Dry mouth

3.3. Rash / Burning sensation on face

3.4. Itchiness

3.5. Puffy / Dry Eyes

3.6. Minor Nose Bleed

4.) What are the major effects of using e-cigarette?

3
4.1. Can harm the lungs.

4.2. Can cause heart disease

4.3. Can cause cancer

5.) What are the factors that affect teenagers to try e-cigarette?

5.1. Curiosity

5.2. Peer

Significance of the Study

The researchers found out that most of the teenagers experiencing different effects

of vape based on our conducted survey. The importance of our study is to help people to

be knowledgeable of the darker side effects of vape if all of the e-cigarette users continue

to use vape. We also want to familiarize the public that e-cigarette is not a good

substitute compare to the traditional cigarette and it will not help to quit addiction

because e-cigarette is also highly addictive.

Scope and Delimitation

Our study is about the effects of vape to all of the e-cigarette users whether in

physical, emotional and mental aspect. We use an applied approach in a form of case

study research. The survey conducted in barangays, malls, and in vape stations where

there are e-cigarette users. The respondents that we chose are all teenagers ages 11 to 25.

We gathered our data by choosing some reliable studies, information as well as

questionnaires that are all validated and connected in our study.

Chapter II

THEORETICAL FRAMEWORK

Review of Related Theory

Maslow stated that people are motivated to achieve certain needs that some needs

for take precedence over others. One of the most needed is for our physical survival. Here

are Maslow Hierarchy of Needs.

1. The Biological and Physiological needs including air, food, drink, shelter, warmth,

sex, sleep. The safety needs are protection from elements, security, order, law, stability

and freedom. Humans can last for a month without eating but only last for a week

without drinking. Oxygen is very essential to humans, without it, we will die. Warmth,

clothing gives us warmth the way we need it, as it serves as a protection to our body.

Shelter, it is the safest place where we can stay. Biological and Physiological needs are

sex and sleep, Sex is for reproduction and sleep is when we are tired and we need to rest.

2. Love and belongingness needs are friendship, intimacy, acceptance, receiving and

giving affection and love. Afflicting, being part of a group. It is normal to feel love and

belongingness, a feeling of intimacy, acceptance, receiving, and even giving.

3. Esteem, human always need respect. Esteem shows the human desire that needs to be

accepted and valued by another, especially those people with low self-esteem; they need

5
lots of attention or fame to make their selves confident. Depression can be a reason of a

person to have a higher level of low self-esteem.

4. Self-Actualization needs realizing personal potential, self-fulfillment, seeking

personal growth and self-experiences. It is considered as a vital part in one’s life

especially in times of difficulties and problems. In other words, this realization means

finding one’s true identity. That’s why other people lead in doing bad deeds or bad habits

because they are in the stage of identity crisis or they don’t know who they are as a

whole.

This theory by Maslow will greatly reflect all the e-cigarette smokers of why they

tried to be addicted in this electronic device. Those five hierarchy of needs are some of

the factors that show how the environment and the people around them affect them in

different aspects.

Review of Related Literature

According to Herbert A. Gilbert in his article, he stated that vape or e cigarette

invented by Hon Lik in 2003 by his own company and it came in the market in China and

even in abroad in 2004. China popularized vape and become a trend all over the world.

How E Cigarette work?E-cigarette is composed of a small lithium battery

powered by an atomizer which heats up a liquid solution and with that solution it will

turn into vapor which is inhaled and exhaled by vape smokers.

(HerbertA.Gilbert,gizmondo.com)

6
There is always a side effect in any substance introduced to our body. The

e-liquids and vaping have no difference. However, it is hard to write down what would be

the side effects of the liquid or whether everything that we experienced is actually from

vaping.

Glantz, Stanton 2016 said that flavorings used in e-cigarette are not yet known if

it may affect people’s health specifically the respiratory system. These flavoring agents

add addictive qualities to nicotine and it’s widely variety of flavors makes the youth

involved in vaping or pushes them to do vaping, youth are interested to do vaping

because they can pick or choose the flavor that they want and it is the start of the

addiction. (Glantz, Stanton 2016)

Cases of Injury of Using Vape

There is an incident of explosion of vapes when they are charging it. While

incidences of fire spreading, the main reasons would be the faulty batteries and negligent

use of e-cigarette, and the other is exploding in the users hands, pockets and even in

mouth. Results will be bonus and topical injuries. There was a case in Scotland, a man

died because of massive explosion from triggered by changing e-cigarette that was near

from an oxygen machine. Recalling that oxygen has a dangerous flammable property, it is

completely cause by the incompatible charger to power up the e-cigarette device. It is

difficult to fault a product like e-cigarette for being so rarely dangerous when they are

designed to displace one of the already proven most dangerous products on the market.

7
480,000 cases of deaths a year in the United States because of Smoking Regular cigarette

and about 7,500 residential home fires started by cigarettes each year.

Nicotine and Anxiety.Just like the relationship of Nicotine in stress, Nicotine’s

relationship to anxiety is just the same. Anxiety is a withdrawal symptom that probably

effects within hours of a person’s last use of e cigarettes. For heavy smokers, this can

happen much earlier.

Everyone has an idea that using vape/e cigarette can lead to the brain and also to

the heart. This, together with frequent coughing, can cause a person to hyperventilate.

“Hyperventilation” is a common effect of panic attacks and other symptom of

anxiety. It includes rapid heartbeat, chest pains, shortness of breath, and lightheadedness.

These symptoms can. In return, create even greater feelings of anxiety. As a result, they

may lead to the development of a panic disorder.

Review of Related Studies

McNeill A. Brose, 2013 stated that while many people are experiencing different

side effect in e-cigarettes, here are the different side effects that may happen while using

vape which can probably attributed to whole or part of vaping such as Dryness of skin

and mouth, Rash / Burning sensation on face, Itchiness of skin, Puffy / Dry eyes and

Minor nose bleed.

Minor effects of E-cigarette

8
Eye expert Dr. Nigel Best said that vaping could be bad for their vision. He added

that chemical in some e-cigarette can irritate the eyes, nose, and throat because studies

have shown that e-cigarette can have partially 5 to 15 times more formaldehyde than the

traditional cigarette. It also contains propylene glycol, which can cause eye and

respiratory irritation and affect the nervous system and spleen.

Dr. Best, said that e-cigarette research is still in the early stages and the long term

effects are yet to be established, there are early indications that some types can cause

irritation in the form of dry eyes. Smokers are already up to four times more likely to

age-related macular degeneration (AMD). Dr. Best also stated that AMD affects around

200,000 people in the UK alone and smokers are more likely to suffer from this eyes

condition than non-smokers.

Nose bleed, some people just prefer the taste of flavored e-cigarettes whether you

smoke using vape or cigarette, it’s common to exhale out the inhaled smoke. But did you

know? When smokers abuse the use of vape, it may cause damage to their nostrils that

leads to bleeding nose.

“Picking bits of flesh from my nostrils, you know when you touch an open

wound and it burns? That’s what it felt like there was a really strong burning sensation

inside my nose”

William Keller 2014 stated that the main chemical that’s causing this is propylene

glycol, a dehydrating chemical that can suck the moisture out of the sensitive skin inside

your nostrils

9
Individuals who use vape claimed that the vapor they exhale have badly dried out

their noses, causing sudden nose bleed.

Effects of Vape in Lungs

Vaping can harm our lungs. Chemicals in e-cigarettes can damage lung tissue and

can cause inflammation. This damage can lessen the ability of the lungs to avoid germs

and other harmful substances, new studies shows.

Doctor Mitch Zeller (2016) is the one who directs the center for Tobacco Products

in Silver Spring said that “I can say definitively, that nicotine is dangerous to the

development of teenage train”. No youth, no children, should be using any tobacco or

nicotine – containing products, it includes e-cigarettes.As time goes by and they continue

to use vape, there are many things which can challenge us. First, is in study, it will never

be easy for them to learn once they use vape daily because it has side effect and it can

damage most of the time our internal organs such as the lungs. It will never be easy for us

to communicate with other people because the smell of the vape will stick in their mouth

that can cause bad breath. Because of that, people will avoid you. One more thing is

family problem. Most of the parents don’t like their son or daughter to use or even try

vape. That’s why it would be a big problem once you disobey what your parents want

you to do. Your physical appearance in other people will change too once you continue to

use vape. People will start to think that you’re an addict, a blacksheep in the family, and a

criminal even if you’re not. That’s all you will get once you try to use vape. Now, are you

going to use or even try vaping?

10
(Chris Riotta, Is Vaping Bad for You? Here are the negative health effects of

smoking from a vape)

E-cigarette does not burn tobacco like the normal cigarettes. E-cigarette burns

nothing; instead they make the flavored liquid into vapor. The liquid always contain

nicotine. It is highly addictive which is found in a substance of tobacco. Our lungs will be

destroyed because of smoking and also the other pollutants.

E-cigarette can cause users some changes in immune genes. Another is that,

e-cigarette users also prove suppression of several additional immune genes. Implying

broader proven effects of respiratory mucosal immune responses compared to cigarette

smoke. “This study, presented at the 2016 American Association for the advancement of

sciences conference in Washington D.C.”

Irina Petrache suspect that e-cigarette have to do something with solvents and

other potentially toxic materials. These chemicals are present in the flavored liquids that

are inhaled through e-cigarette in University of North Carolina, scientist exposed human

lung cells to 13 flavorings. Exposures lasted either 30minutes. Five of the flavoring (hot

cinnamon candies, banana pudding, cola, vanilla and menthol) affected the cells. They

concluded that the treated cells can no longer reproduce at normal rates and according to

them in high dose intake of these flavorings can even kill the cells of the lungs.

Effects of Flavoring

The vape liquid contain solvents for flavorings to dissolve while the e-cigarette is

commonly used for solvent to transform into something dangerous. Carbonyls (2014) a

11
study showed that it contain formaldehyde and other compounds known as suspected of

causing cancer.

Many studies are available about the effect of this in our health. It is divided into

three chemical, clinical and toxicological studies. In studies of chemicals, the liquids had

been analyzed for their ingredients. But mostly, only toxicants known from cigarette

smoke have been investigated. In clinical trials, all the users are examined after the short

term usage of e-cigarettes with regard to respiratory function and also the response in the

cardiovascular system. A long term studies includes possible improvements of clinically

evident illness. In toxicological studies, scientist combine the exposure of people’s

human embryonic stem cells, human pulmonary fibroblast and also neuronal stem cells to

liquids of e-cigarette and also the exposure of fibroblast and cardiomyoblast to extract

e-cigarette vapor. It is really harmless thing which can change our lives especially when

the effects started to come in your body.

According to the study of Cameron’s team as little as 30 to 60 milligrams of

nicotine can kill an adult and mere 10mg may kill a child. It its new study, they showed

that a small vial of e-cigarette liquid can contain 100mg of nicotine. If a child or adult

consumed too much vial, they could die, the team concluded. (January 2014 | Issue of

Tobacco Control)

James Pankow (2014) stated that e-cigarette liquid flavoring agents has several

chemicals such as benzaldehyde can irritate the lungs. They published their findings

online on April 15 in Tobacco control. As of January 2014, it states that there were 7,764

of new flavors continue to grow at a rate of roughly 240 a month.

12
According to new date from the latest annual National Youth Tobacco surveys, it

stated that teens have been moving away from smoking cigarettes transferring to

e-cigarette. And in new survey showed in April 16, 2014 e-cigarette had become the most

commonly used tobacco product by middle and high school students.

The striking increased in one study done by Zeller. “He states that the use of

e-cigarette in high school is one that the government must look into, because nicotine is a

substance that can lead the students to addiction. Besides the risks of addiction, there are

also health risks as vape fluids can be toxic to lungs.”

Formaldehyde, a human carcinogen contained in smoke of cigarette, also found in

vapor of e-cigarette. Researchers saide-cigarette sales inflated in the US and many

believed that vaping would replace tobacco smoking and a panacea for the rarely 100,000

lung cancer deaths caused by conventional cigarettes But according to an analysis

published in the New England Journal of Medicine, exposure to formaldehyde from

e-cigs could be 5 to 15 times higher than smoke from tobacco "There are toxins and some

are nor in e-cigs than in regular cigarettes. And if you are vaping, you should not use it at

a high-voltage setting", said James F. Pankow and his college's found out that vaping

3mg of e-liquid at a high voltage can produce 14mg of hidden formaldehyde. And

researchers estimated a tobacco smoker would get 0.15mg of formaldehyde per stick or

3mg in a 20-pack. Pankow told NBC news that those numbers "may be conservative".

Pankow said that they are not saying that e-cigs are more dangerous than cigarettes. And

he added they are just only looking at one chemical. There are more than 6,000 chemicals

in tobacco smoke, so it's hard to say that formaldehyde is the main source of

13
cigarette-related cancers. A lot of people are assuming that e-cigs are safe and fine after

using far an year but Pankow said that hazards of e-cigs will be seen after a long term use

that range in 10 to 15 years.

Effects of Vegetable Glycerin

There is must less information on the effects of Vegetable glycerin is often simply

used instead of P6, for users concerned about “chemical” make-up of the better. In

addition, they are reportedly that they have different kind of vapor, it described at a

stronger throat hit, and something that electronic cigarette users simply prefer propylene

glycol may also be a powerful detergent against pneumonia, influenza and other

respiratory diseases)

Vape Can Cause Heart Diseases

Suzayn Schick a professor and researcher at UC San Francisco conduct a study

which funded by FDA or Food and Drug Administration reveals how e-cigarette affect

the cardiovascular system of human using laser photometer to measure the mass of

particles or chemicals that are present in the vapor of e-cigarette, so by this study we

must be knowledgeable on the health effects and it's public health effects before it's too

late because those particles causes people to die of heart attacks which is not a small

thing on us. (Meredith Kile, 7 things you need to know about electronic cigarette)

Nicotine’s effects on Mental Health

14
Those people who are addicted in e cigarettes didn’t prove their habit by saying

like this. “It relaxes me that it helps my anxiety”“it helps me to control my stress because

it makes me calm down”

Different people who are addicted in e cigarettes believe that they are

self-medicating. In reality, what they are being threatened as they use e cigarette is the

nasty symptoms of nicotine withdrawal. Therefore, those people are threating something

that would not have otherwise. In the study of Institute of Medical Psychology and

Behavior Neurobiology, they support that idea. That institute is at the University of

Tubingen in Germany.Because the main reason of the smokers is to relieve stress, they

start to lose their ability to actually cope from stress. After a while, their answer for

everything is using e cigarettes instead of solving the problems he/she face. Coping with

stress is classified as one of the mental skills. If people don’t use it, they lose it.

The Effects of Nicotine on People Who Suffer From Mental Illness

The common people who suffer from mental illness are 70% more likely to

smoke rather those who don’t. It is based on the researchers at the CENTERS FOR

DISEASE CONTROL AND PREVENTION.

Depression. Many factors can help in determining who does and does not develop mental

illnesses like depression. Nicotine is the direct cause of depression, as what the people

believe. It is because of the effects of nicotine on the dopamine levels in the brain. Using

e-cigarettes may temporarily increase levels of dopamine. Therefore, it increases a

person’s feelings of pleasure and also well-being. Eventually, it falls to abnormally levels,

15
causing the person to feel unhappy. If this pattern continues in several weeks, months at a

time. The person’s dopamine pathways stop working normally. It is why one of the

negative effects of nicotine is the development of our mood such as “depression.”

Schizophrenia.Royal College of Psychiatry stated that 90% of the people having this

disease use e-cigarettes. It may be because people who have this use e-cigarette in an

attempt to either manage the symptoms of that disease. Or maybe, it is to counteract side

effects of the medication. Examples: restlessness, tremors, and muscle spasms. Other

studies have even shown e cigarettes to have positive effects on attention, working

memory, and reflexes in people with SCHIZOPHRENIA.

It is important to note that cigarettes themselves often contain flavor chemicals,

much higher percentage than e-cigarette. In comparison, a cigarette contains about 8.5%

four times as much chemical flavorings present in cigarettes. And even more. In

comparison in the e-version nonetheless, many factory worker began to experience health

problems and lung disease in response to inhaling the flavoring substance. However,

there is a large amount that we do not know about what inhaling already for approved

substance. Firstly, there are some items that are consumed. A good example of this is

flour. Flour has been known to cause symptoms of asthma, chronic bronchitis and

changes in your lung function. In addition, there are we’ll known examples where inhaled

flavoring can be potentially dangerous there wasn’t really even any understanding of

how dangerous, when consuming it orally had appeared to present.

CHAPTER V

CONCLUSION AND RECOMMENDATION

Conclusion and Recommendation

Upon investigation and observation in our study, we therefore conclude that

electric cigarette is not a good substitute in cigarette because based on our evidences and

in our conducted survey we proved that e-cigarette is not safe to human. It has highly

addictive chemicals like formaldehyde or formalin, propylene glycol, vegetable glycerin,

dangerous flavorings and also nicotine which can cause minor effects like asthma,

dehydration, dry mouth, dry skin, dry eyes, itchy skin, burning sensation, and nose

bleeding. If prolong, it can harm the lungs, can cause heart diseases and can also cause

cancer. We, researchers found out that teenager choose to use vape only for fun which got

the highest percentage of 96% based on our statistics. Another thing, e-cigarette users

chooses vape just to follow the trend it was 80% among our respondents. Also 76% of

our respondents are not aware that e-cigarette has a negative effect to the users. In our

survey, we found out that there are minors who are using vape ages 11 to 17 years old.

Our government must look into regarding this matter before it’s too late. To all e-

cigarette users, you must stop using vape before it totally destroyed your body as well as

your future. Stop this habit from now on and do some alternatives like inclining yourself

to activities that will not harm your body as well as your life.

27
The recommendation for the future researchers is for them to investigate how

e-cigarette users affect non users and the other factors why the users choose to use vape.

We also recommend for the future researchers to be systematic in doing their research

and collect reliable evidences on what they are fighting for because it will surely help for

the success of their study.
