Tangent → A line that intersects a circle in exactly one point.

Point of tangency → a point of intersection of the tangent line in the circle.
Common tangent → a line that is common tangent to two circles on the same plane.
Common External Tangents → tangents which do not intersect the segment joining
the centers of the two circles.
Common Internal Tangents → tangents that Intersect the segment joining the centers of the
circles.
Secant → is a line that intersects the circle at exactly two points and a line that contains a chord.
External Secant Segment → is a part of a secant segment that is outside the circle.
Segment of a circle → the region bounded by an arc and the segment joining its endpoints.
Sector of a circle → the region bounded by an arc of the circle and the two radii to the endpoints of
the arc.
EXAMPLE: Given the figure at the right, identify the following:
a. Tangent – ⃡𝐵𝐸 , 𝐶𝐷

b. Point of Tangency – 𝐵, 𝐸, 𝐶, 𝐷
c. Common Tangent – ⃡𝐵𝐸 , 𝐶𝐷

d. Common external Tangents – ⃡𝐵𝐸

e. Common internal Tangent – 𝐶𝐷

f. Secant – 𝐻𝐾
̅̅̅̅
g. External Secant Segment – 𝐺𝐾
h. Segment of a circle – region bounded by ̅̅̅̅
𝐻𝐺 and its intercepted arc
i. Sector of a circle - region bounded by and radii ̅̅̅̅ ̅̅̅.
𝐴𝐵 and 𝐴𝐽
