Maniac Vocal Performance Question

If I were playing the part of the Maniac, I would want my audience to understand that the
Maniac is a character how is delivering a serious message with a comic outlay. My justification for
this is that the playwright, Dario Fo, wanted to give a serious political message about authority to
the audience watching his show through the medium of comedy. I would achieve this through my
vocal performance by changing the pitch of my voice depending on which character the Maniac is
playing for example between Act 1 Scene 1 and 2. I would also be constantly changing the pace of
my voice, slowing down when emphasising key points which link to the message of the play. For
example on the line, “The Ministry doesn’t trust the motives of the judge who conducted the first
enquiry. Rotters, eh.” I would slow down slightly and place emphasis on the word “Rotters” as it is
showing the attitude of authority figures of the time, remembering that Dario Fo wanted to share
the message that authority is corrupt.
