FOCUS OF AUTOCAD
2D Drawing

3D MODELLING
AutoCAD Applications
 AutoCAD as an architectural planning tool: It comes
with a user-interface with built-in design lay-outs. The
layouts contain numerous templates specially
designed for architectural planning and building
construction. The latest versions of AutoCAD come
with analytical tools. The tools can analyse the
components of the building to troubleshoot stress
and load levels of building supports. AutoCAD enables
Architects to design, plan, execute and analyse the
strength of a building, at design stage level.

 AutoCAD as an engineering drafting tool: You can

use AutoCAD to draw accurate 2D drawings for any
engineering domain and also use AutoCAD to render
to 3D models to help in visualization of the end
product. It is useful for Civil, Mechanical and Electrical
systems. It helps engineers to design, analyse and
solve design issues resulting in accurate designs.
 AutoCAD as a graphic design tool: AutoCAD
has innate features that enable users to plan
and map out spaces and take advantage of the
space available. It can be used simultaneously
with 3D Max and various other application
softwares including animation tools.

 AutoCAD in 3D Printing: For a 3D print of an

object, one has to choose the object, get a
virtual 3D representation and then feed it to
the 3D printer. A 3D print has its own
advantages for designers, and this is where
AutoCAD helps them. It ensures the
compatibility so that designs can be exported
to various preferred formats.

 AutoCAD as industrial design tool: AutoCAD

helps to reduce manufacturing costs as it saves
time and efforts required for manual designing.
AutoCAD Advantages over manual drafting
Storage and accessibility –
 AutoCAD files can be stored on your computer or stored in any storage
media.
 Software files occupy less storage space compared to the storage space
required for manually drafted paper drawings.
 Paper drawings also require care and protection from loss or damage
caused by floods , fires or other disasters and may be damaged over time.
 Software files can also be stored in any cloud storage from which they can
be easily accessed at any time, wherever there is an internet connection.

3D View –
 Although it is possible to sketch 3D drawings manually, they are not as
effective and realistic as computer-aided drawings.
 AutoCAD helps model 3D objects with colors, materials and/or textures
applied to different surfaces, making them vivid and easier for the user to
visualize the final product.
Revisions –
While creating any drawing on paper or software, there are bound to be a number of
revisions or modifications.
 In manual drafting, you need to erase and redraw to make any changes to your
drawing.
 CAD significantly simplifies the revision process with its various editing tools.
 With a few clicks of your mouse, you can undo, redo or delete your actions.
 You do not need to re-draw an object at any time later, as you can modify the
existing object by mirroring, stretching, rotating, scaling, etc.
Speed and Time –
 AutoCAD is significantly faster than the traditional method of manual drafting.
 It speeds up the task of preparing bills of materials, reports, scales, etc.
 The tiresome task of drawing each line on paper can be done with a few mouse
clicks.
 As CAD software eliminates repetitive iterations, a considerable amount of time is
saved.
Accuracy –
 In manual drafting, all the objects drawn must be of correct size and
alignment.
 Each object need to be manually verified and dimensioned as the
slightest error can be catastrophic to the entire project.
 With CAD, there are numerous techniques available to obtain exact
dimensions thus leading to improved accuracy in the project.

Owing to the numerous benefits in terms of speed, accuracy, data

storage, revision CAD offers over manual drafting, it has become a
standard for the Industries.

edges are typically rotated to a 30-degree angle. Edges are drawn at true size or at a
standard scale.
Orthographic Projection Views of a single object that are projected 90 degrees from one another. Consists of six
standard views: Top, Front, Right, Bottom, Rear, and Left.
Glossary (Cont.)
Hatch A pattern added to the drawing to indicate an area of a part in section.
Mirror To create a reversed image of an element or a group of elements.
Revolve A 3D tool used to project a shape in a cylindrical direction
Round An outside corner of an object that has been rounded with a radius
Scale The relationship between the size of the drawing on paper/screen and its actual size.
Solid A three-dimensional object with height, width, and depth.
Spline An arc that does not have a fixed center. Also is a term for slots that are cut on a
cylindrical part for a mating part.
AUTOCAD SCREEN
HOW AutoCAD WORKS
A coordinated system is used in the AutoCAD.
Each drawing shows its coordinates.
There are so many commands like copy, move, rotate, 2D
mirror, path array, rectangular array, polar array, and more.
By using LAYER command, different types of drawing can be
made at the same time.
Using line, arc, circle, rectangle, ellipse and polygon, you can
make so many drawings of different types.
WAY TO PROVIDE COMMAND
CO-ORDINATE SYSTEM

In figure, the line shows its

co-ordinate that is (9,6)
and (-10,-4).
Everything we draw from
AutoCAD is accurate.
All objects drawn on the
screen are based on a
simple X-Y coordinate
system.
DRAW TOOLBAR AND MODIFY TOOLBAR:
The image below shows two very basic tool bars, which will be heavily
used as you progress towards the end of your drawing. These tool bars
can be accessed under the Home tab.

 As we move the cursor over any tool in the toolbar, a tooltip appears
indicating the name of the tool. And if we wait another three seconds,
it turns into a brief description of that particular tool. For more details
we can press F1 key.
DIMENSION TOOLBAR:

• AutoCAD provides a whole range of dimensioning tools which can be

used to quickly dimension any drawing without the need for
measurement.
• Dimensioning in AutoCAD is automatic; lines, arrows and text are all
taken care of by the dimension commands. AutoCAD dimensions are
special blocks which can easily be edited or erased as necessary.
HOW TO SET DRAWING UNITS:

To set the drawing units, go

to the drop-down window at
the top let side of the
AutoCAD screen labeled as
Format or just press Alt + o
key to do so. And from this
menu select units. A pop-up
window will appear that will
set our drawing units as
shown in Fig.

Amity School of Engineering and Technology
Subject Introduction
Graphic Language :-
A technical person can use the graphic language as powerful means of
communication with others for conveying ideas on technical matters.
However, for effective exchange of ideas with others, the engineer must have
proficiency in
(i) language, both written and oral,
(ii) symbols associated with basic sciences and
(iii) the graphic language.
Engineering drawing is a suitable graphic language from which any trained person
can visualise the required object.
As an engineering drawing displays the exact picture of an object, it obviously
conveys the same ideas to every trained eye.
The graphic language had its existence when it became necessary to build new
structures and create new machines or the like, in addition to representing the
existing ones.
Classification of Drawings
1. Machine Drawing :-
It is pertaining to machine parts or components. It is presented
through a number of orthographic views, so that the size and shape
of the component is fully understood.
Part drawings and assembly drawings belong to this classification.
An example of a machine drawing is given in Fig.
2. Production Drawing :-
A production drawing, also referred to as working drawing, should
furnish all the dimensions, limits and special finishing processes such
as heat treatment, honing, lapping, surface finish, etc., to guide the
person on the shop floor in producing the component.
The title should also mention the material used for the product,
number of parts required for the assembled unit, etc.
3. Part Drawing :-
Component or part drawing is a detailed drawing of a component to
facilitate its manufacture.
All the principles of orthographic projection and the technique of
graphic representation must be followed to communicate the details
in a part drawing.
A part drawing with production details is rightly called as a
production drawing or working drawing.
4. Assembly Drawing :-
A drawing that shows the various parts of a machine in their correct
working locations is an assembly drawing as shown in Fig.
